Excellent way to do taxes if you missed the cut off year. I did 2019 taxes for one of my kids on Jan 2 2021. If you are a beginner at taxes I would probably say you are better off with one of the mor popular tax preparation sights as they explain more, but are more expensive. I opted for the $6.99 deluxe version of of this one. It gives you free help if needed. Over all, I like this one for doing my family's less complicated taxes. But not my own. The only problem they need to work on is the payment section. You do need to pay for the State return. The payment section wouldn't let me pay with my card because the address was pre-populated with my sons address. We live at same address. I changed it to my name, and it still wouldn't work. After three tries, I deleted the address too, then re-entered the exact same address, and it finally worked. But that resulted in three charges from my bank account. After contacting them about the three charger, I read in FAQ that they hold the money as pending for each try and that the extra charges would eventually drop off - in 3 to 5 days. So, due to the frustration and extra hour spent trying to finalize return, I'm giving only 3 stars. read more

I attempted to use FreeTaxUSA, but my experience was disappointing. Despite the website promoting "free" filing, I found that you cannot proceed with certain features unless you upgrade. First, I was prompted to upgrade to Deluxe for $7.99. Later, I was offered Pro Support for $44.99, and state filing cost an additional $15.99 plus sales tax. Other add-ons included Audit Defense for $19.99, a printed copy for $8.96, and a bound copy for $17.96. By the end, the costs added up quickly, making the "free" claim feel misleading. I also found the platform difficult to use for 1099 income. I spent several hours on the phone and in online chats with customer support trying to correctly enter my 1099 information. Unfortunately, no one was able to provide a solution that worked for my situation. After investing approximately 4-6 hours trying to make the service work, I ultimately had to abandon it and visit H&R Block to complete my taxes. When their own software caused an error in my return, support couldn't explain it, couldn't fix it, and couldn't offer anything beyond copy‑and‑paste IRS text. There is no real support, no troubleshooting, and no accountability for mistakes their system creates. I'm paying for a service that doesn't exist. After filing with them for 10+ years when I finally need help I realize what a mistake using this company is. I qualified for the free service,since I only made a certain amount, when I completed all the forms, it led me to a payment screen which asked me for payment. This tax preparer's software has a serious glitch for the 2023 version. When I filed in 2022, the FTUSA program correctly populated all fields on my state 1040 form, however in 2023 the program entered an incorrect amount which resulted in tax being due instead of my receiving a refund. I understand that the tax bill was legitimate. I DID owe the money to the state, however, I was charged $36 interest becasue I did not know I owed until after the 4/15 filing date. In any event, I contacted FreeTaxUSA support to request they reimburse me the interest I paid and they refused. They vehemently argued that their program chose the correct amount, with no basis in fact. I asked them why credit info was entered correctly in 2022 but 2023 was erroneous and they would not answer, they just remained adamant as if it were my fault. Please be forewarned that FreeTaxUSA values monetary gain over satisfactory customer support and think twice before you hand your money over to them. read more

Free Tax USA is a waste of time. If you just do the federal form and don't pay for the state return, they will continue to erase information you've already put in and send you back to those pages. Then, you have to continue through all the already done pages until they can offer you -- again, again, and again, the state tax for a fee. You cannot actually file your federal tax because they continue to claim that you've left out necessary information that you've ALREADY PUT IT, BUT SOMEHOW IT'S NOW MISSING! Don't waste your time on this. If you need help, go through the form with them and copy it. Then, just print out your own form and copy the information down because otherwise the site will continue to make you fill in information that you've already put in and it's not worth it. read more

I have used it for two years, but this year was worst than last year. There is a lot to like about it if your taxes are consistently the same, particularly if you did not change addresses, employers, or anything, then it is a breeze because it uses your information from the former year to set you up for the current year. However, that is also the downfall that I found this year. I had several changes from last year and when it came time to review my taxes, I ended up with two Red Box flags and two Yellow Box flags. The problem was that I was closing in on my time to file by midnight and I did not expect that kind of hang up. Worse still is that when I followed their instructions and went back to correct the pages, it turned out that it was not something that I did wrong, but something that the software did wrong. I had a "dividend Income" from my former year. The program falsely assumed that I should have one this year too, so it sent me back to the page where dividends are inserted just so I could remove the page that was useless to me anyway. Then to get back to the Finish line, I had to click continue about 30 times, for each set of questions that I have already answered and needed no change. What a waste of my time when I was on a deadline. H & R Block used to zap me right to where I left off if there was a question to resolve, but not this program. The bigger problem was that with each of the four flags, it was the same thing...go though 30 pages of continue to get back and work on the next flag. That became quite annoying, particularly when one of the flags was not fully resolved the first time that I did it, so I had to go back a second time. A total of about 150 useless clicks to get back safely to finish and send it by midnight. I finally got it sent at 11:58 PM. Two minutes to spare because of the bulky way of doing things instead of simply allowing the fix on the flag and then return instantly to the Finish page to pick up where you left off. This has to be the most shoddy tax service I've ever seen. I read online that this company has the tax return sent to their office, where they take out whatever fees they think are owed them and then mail or send the rest of the money to the rightful owner. No way to contact these losers. I believe they are located in South Provo Utah. I'm going to contact the IRS and since they operate in my state I'm going to find out who licenses them and any other state or federal office that regulates them and do what I can to shut them down. The Good: Easy to use website. That's literally the only good thing I can say about this tax service. There is no phone number to call them. You can email them or message them online only. Was told one price for their service, yet the TPG bank they use to extract their fee took double the quoted price. When using Free Tax USA, unless you pay them directly then you have the option to have them take fees directly out of your refund. They use TPG for this service. I used the IRS's where's my refund tool only to learn my return was deposited on February 18th. I had originally signed up for a direct deposit so I gave it a week. Nothing, I called TPG and they gave me the old check is in the mail BS .Told me my routing or account number must be wrong... they cut me a check they said. Okay, I call on the 3rd of March and was told they sent the check on the 28th. 7-10 business days. So I was. I call on the 11th, was told check went out on the 3rd. So again I wait.. I call today... now my check was sent on the 9th... WTF!?!? I have asked to speak to a supervisor and they tell me it'll be 24 to 72 hours before one will contact me... Tax Free USA, tells me that there is nothing they can do about it. They got their fee so they have washed their hands of it. I was referred by someone who has used tax free USA for like 6 years and haven't had any problems. This is my first year to file with them and this will be the last. I will not recommend this service to anyone. read more

I had someone do our 2020 taxes and that person decided to use this program. Our tax returns were both rejected by IRS because our prior year AGI or PIN did not match the IRS records. Weird. Even though it says "Free Tax USA" it is not necessarily free, I did pay for the software for at least one of the returns (not a problem). Anyway, tried to fix the return months later and was able to log in after a bit of trouble. It was very difficult to find the return in the system. I contacted support and they wrote out the steps. I was able to get to the return but the system did not allow me to print a paper copy. Huge waste of time. had to go through the whole return over and over. When you finally find the tab where it says "print and mail your return" it won't print. Not happy. I'm still here with no tax return due to their system not being able to get the returns to IRS. read more

I helped my mom file her taxes th iui s year, and was nervous that since she is low income that every where would be too expensive. IRS pointed me to use FreeTax USA which was a good decision. The only thing is they don't have a phone number listed however, they have an interactive website to ask questions. They also respond promptly to questions via email. I wish I could give a half a star all I wanted to do was print out my 2019 taxes. I checked to see if I had the option before I even started they said I did it then I filled it out pay my 699 and of course I couldn't print it out. They wind up charging me 699 three times. Then I kept trying to get through to customer service after about the fourth or fifth message they sent a message telling me I had to spend 1799 more in order to print out my federal taxes I had to pay for my state taxes to get done and be filed . I did it online so I could print it out the same day it's been eight days and I still don't have my print out . I would only recommend this site if you like migraines. read more

This software has serious integrity issues. I received an audit from state and upon looking deep, I found that it was the result of this software incorrectly using an incorrect amount. I was hugely penalized from nj state along with 3 years of interest owed for understatement. Their audit assistance is also a sham, they simply tell you what the issue is, which anyone with basic education would understand from the audit report. They did not take any responsibility for the calculation error despite my clearly telling them what the issue is. I would not recommend this software to anyone for tax filing, they are not free first of all; you have to pay for audit assistance which is useless when reality hits and more importantly, there are calculation errors, which will land you into trouble. for 2018 I am switching to another software, atleast there is a peace of mind. read more

I used Free Tax USA's online program. For whatever reason, the system couldn't file my taxes electronically for me, and told me that my total was $0 for filing NYS taxes, For some reason, the system still charged me $12.95 for a service that allegedly included electronic filing. I contacted the company's support desk, which told me that I still had to pay, or I could cancel my tax forms and receive a refund. Because I sent my taxes in already, I have no interest in doing so. Besides for this hiccup, the system worked quickly and seamlessly. But seriously, it's wrong for the company to charge me when it said $0 was due. read more
