Georgetown, Washington DC - My handsome husband surprised me with Saturday night tickets for the Georgetown Ghost Tour. We are local to the area and love history, spooky stories and corny jokes so for us this is a fun date :-). The tour began at the Old Stone House where we were checked in and divided into two groups of about 18 people each. Everyone in our group was from out of town except us and our amazing tour guide Sonia. She effortlessly led us from site to site while allowing time for questions and photos. She also made sure our group stayed together and safely crossed the streets. I was concerned that it would be hard to hear given the traffic and Saturday night usual cacophony that is Georgetown but that generally wasn't a problem. We didn't see any ghosts - DRAT! But we did have fun and learn some history along the way. We would recommend this tour company and this particular tour. read more

My husband and I did the National Mall and Tidal Basin walking tour a few weeks ago when we were in DC for cherry blossom season. Our guide, Trevor, was terrific: enthusiastic, energetic, and a wealth of knowledge, everything you want in a tour guide. If you've never been to our nation's capital before, a walking tour of the National Mall like this is excellent since you visit all of the memorials and monuments over a three hour period. If you have the energy and the time, you should do this one. We started at 10am on Friday, March 22nd; it was sunny when we started, but then got overcast and chilly as the morning went on, but we beat the rain that did arrive the next day. Over the course of our three hour tour, we walked a distance of 4.6 miles (according to my Garmin) and visited the WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Lincoln, MLK, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials, plus walked a good bit of the Tidal Basin to enjoy the blossoms. Along the way, Trevor doled out facts and history about everything we saw. Yes, you could do this on your own with a book or audio, but this tour was better since you have a live person to interact with the whole time. Although it's called "Free", Tours By Foot is actually not free, unless you are just rude and don't tip your guide. I made a reservation online for our tickets, which cost $4 each (the booking fee for each person). On the day of the tour, you tip your guide whatever you feel is fair. The guide takes cash and Venmo. I will definitely be using this group again when we travel since they offer tours in cities all over the world! read more

Immensely enjoyed the two-hour walking tour of the National Mall I went on a couple of days ago. Rebecca did a superb job with explaining the backstories of the sites we visited. She told us several things that we didn't learn in school. For example, did you know that war memorials are dedicated on Memorial Day? Or that the Washington Monument is held up not by a sturdy foundation but gravity? Or that the names on the Vietnam Memorial aren't in ABC order? I learned those facts on the tour. Rebecca was really cool for letting us explore the sites and take pictures of them for 10 minutes or so. I felt like this tour made my first time to the nation's capital complete. Did the "Ghosts of Georgetown" tour and had a great time. I live in DC but always wanted to do one of these tours and am really glad I did. It's really fun learning about the city you live in and getting to be a tourist in your own city. I learned a TON about buildings I've passed a million times without a second thought or even buildings I'd been in whose history I didn't know. Don't let the title of the tour scare you, the tour is not scary or gruesome. It may depend on the tour guide but the tour is definitely a lot more historical with some fun ghost stories/spiritual stories in between. The ghost stories range from funny to sweet to creepy so it was the perfect balance especially since I did the tour alone I wouldn't have wanted to leave totally freaked out! Our tour guide Emilia was so funny, she had a lot of great energy and shared fun tidbits about creepy stories from past tours and funny Georgetown/DCisms. I would definitely do another tour and think this is a great activity for families or people from out of town. It's a really fun tour for locals too! read more

Did a lot of research before picking a tour I wanted to go on for my dc trip. I was deciding between the DC by Foot walking tour of the monuments or the Ultimate Biking bike tour. Before picking I was leaning towards the bike tour because it seemed like it would be more fun but I was concerned the guides wouldn't be quite as knowledgeable about the history of the monuments so I ended up choosing the walking tour just for that reason. I'm soo glad I chose the walking tour. Trevor was our guide and he was so knowledgeable about each monument that it truly made viewing each monument special. We also passed the ultimate bike tours a couple times and it did not at look appealing at all. They were wheel to wheel navigating around all the pedestrians with their yellow caution vests and helmets it looked not fun at all unless you had 8-12 year old kids you needed to keep entertained. read more

A scandalous side of White House? Who would've thought it? Ummm... Okay, maybe I don't have to stretch my mind too much here. Leave the kiddos behind, for Free Tours by Foot's 1.5 hour "White House at Night: Secrets & Scandals" tour that dishes all the dirt on presidential affairs, nearby duels, murders and scandalous first ladies. While it isn't technically a ghost tour, it is the perfect accompaniment to the darker side of history. The tour starts approximately at 8 PM near the White House. I luckily had on my running shoes to keep up with our speed-walking guide, who shared rapid-fire 'true' stories of the city's darkest secrets and most haunted houses, including the White House. This is a 'Pay What You Want' tour, though they do charge a small booking fee of $3 to ensure that you show up. I guess people are known for booking and 'ghosting.' (and the pun was DEFINITELY intentional). If you want to take a similar, less scandalous, tour with the kids, Free Tours By Foot also offers a daytime version that covers presidential history and true stories and legends of the founding fathers and Revolutionary War heroes on Saturdays at 2 PM. After it wraps, I recommend grabbing drinks or dinner at the Old Ebbitt Grill, one of DC's oldest establishments. I did the Scandals on the Embassy Row tour. The tour lasted about 2 hours. The guide was personable and articulate. It was a nice walk around Embassy Row. Got to see some great Embassy's and know some of the stories that happened in the areas. Probably walked about a mile or two. The thing I remember most was we got to see Jeff Bezo's Washington D.C. house. That was cool - it took up about a block. It was a historic tour - mainly stories around the 1920-1970ish. When I heard the name, I thought the scandals would involve US Presidents and other well-known historical figures. It really didn't. Most of the scandals took place between 1920-1970ish and it was like a President's daughter or a US Representative that no one has ever heard of. I thought it would be more modern and more relevant. Not stories about random people that no one has ever heard of. I feel like there are so much better stories to be told. Overall okay experience. It was a pleasant walk and a great night. The tour started at 7:30 pm in August - which was a perfect time because the sun was going down. It was cool to see the embassies. read more

I did three tours with this name-your-own-price tour company and overall I had a very positive experience. The way this company works is each guide will give his/her designated tour and people pay however much they think the tour is worth at the end. You will need to reserve each tour on their website in order to guarantee a spot. Arlington National Cemetery (approximately 2 hours): Our group met our tour guide just right outside of the Visitor Center (after the security check). Unlike the official Arlington National Cemetery's hop on / hop off 60-minute trolley tour, this is a 2-hour walking tour. Even though there were a lot of steps to navigate, the overall tour pace was just right and I didn't feel too rush. Capitol Hill & Library of Congress Tour (approximately 2 hours): Our group met our guide at the Capitol South Metro Station (by the benches in front of the Cannon House Office Building). Since it was really hard to find any metered parking in this area, I just parked at a nearby parking garage (A&R Parking - 412 First St SE, Washington, DC 20003) and this small underground parking structure only opens from Monday ~ Friday from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM ($14 daily max rate). Our group got to see exterior of the Capitol Building & Supreme Court, walked inside the Library of Congress' Jefferson Building, and received tickets for the official Capitol Building tour at the end. Personally the Library of Congress Tour wasn't as detailed as I would like due to time constrain and I would still do the official Jefferson Building Guided Tour at the Ground Floor Information Desk. National Mall (1 hour 45 min): I was originally planning to do the National Mall night tour (Memorials & Moonlight), but I couldn't make it and rescheduled to National Mall afternoon tour two days later. Our guide Boglarka was very energetic, informative, and witty! The tour started at the intersection of 15th St. and Constitution Ave. and our group got to see the Washington Monument, glimpse of the White House, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, and the Lincoln Memorial. Since the tour ends at the Lincoln Memorial, It may not be a bad idea to use the ride sharing apps to get back to where you need to be. I highly recommend this tour company because they have so many different DC tours and I was able to put together an itinerary very easily. Not only that, most of their tours are based on all these popular DC tourist destinations and you will get to see all these places in a very efficient way. read more

DC by Foot Tour When it comes to restaurants - I'm good. I know how much gratuity to add and I have it down to a pretty good system. Tipping in other situations always makes me super nervous, so I typically go on the generous side of things- I hope. I still end up frequently googling "how much do you tip *whatever I'm about to do*?" I almost didn't book a tour through Free Tours By Foot, because determining the right compensation AND the proper base price stressed me out a little. It just felt like an extra thing to have to research before my trip. I am so glad I didn't let that silly barrier stop me from booking though! If you are an over-researcher and over-preparer, like myself, stop over thinking and just book the dang "free" tour. You're probably reading this in your own researching stage, hoping that some reviews will mention how much they determined their tour was worth. I'm not spilling "what my tour was worth" in this review. Since you pay cash you do kind of need to have SOME idea of what you will pay at the end. My tour group for Georgetown Glow had about 25-30 people, so it was no where close to a private tour. There were plenty of opportunities to talk to our tour guide during location changes to dig deeper and ask questions. So parts of my tour felt private as everyone else conversed among their own travel groups. Because I was able to dig a little deeper and have some extra conversations with our guide I ended up pricing the tour closer to a small group experience. I walked away feeling good about the price I paid for the tour. A quick google search for "group tours" and "small group tours" will give you a range so you can feel good about having enough at the end of your tour. The one disappointing element to my specific tour was that it was a Georgetown Glow tour that started an hour before it got dark. I doubled back at the end of the tour to see the installations we saw in the beginning. It was definitely worth the extra trip back & I think our ending would have been a better starting point saving the biggest and brightest "wow-factor" installations for the end when it was dark. When I booked I assumed we would have one hour going through the history and then when it was dark we would explore the light installations. I still had a great experience and would recommend the tour, I just wanted to throw that part out there to help anyone researching the same tour. It's not a Free Tours by Foot thing though, it's a Georgetown thing. The benefit to starting early was the installations were less crowded at least. I still ended up thinking the tour was worth more than I expected, because my guide was just phenomenal. I was so impressed by her knowledge of not only our tour stops, but of DC as a whole. (I took a really blurry picture of her name tag, so sorry if I am totally messing up her name, but I think it was Ingeborg.) Her knowledge and friendly personality really made this a 5-star experience for me. If this is the standard for their guides (and based on the other reviews, it is), I won't hesitate to book another tour through Free Tours by Foot DC. read more

The rain could not stop her or us and I'm so glad I decided to see the tour. She asked me where I was from and what I do, and when she found out I'm studying to teach and that's her day profession, she gave me tips! I recently took the All In One (National Mall & Tidal Basin) Walking Tour with Jared as the tour guide and I absolutely loved it! The All in One tour is 4 hours with mini breaks as well a 40 minute lunch break. It's lot of walking but have no fear because it's not very fast paced and there are a lot of spots to rest. Jared was also amazing because he made sure we were in the shade and not basking in the sun. The tour covers a lot. The first stop is the Washington Monument followed by the National WWII Memorial, then the Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Korean War Veterans Memorial, Tidal Basin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin. They also cover the White House and Capitol from a distant. Jared was an amazing tour guide. He was very informative and covered a lot of history in the tour. He had a lot of interesting trivia as well as some funny jokes too in between. You could really tell that he knew his stuff and that he really loves the city. He was passionate about each and every stop on the tour. Aside from being informative of the various sites we saw, Jared was very helpful in answering any questions all of us tourists had. He cracked some very dry jokes, which I appreciated, even if the foreigners didn't really "get" them. He also gave us lots of lesser known facts about the monuments. His spiel about the Lincoln Monument was especially enlightening. He gave everyone an appropriate amount of time to see the sights on their own, but he still kept the pace up for those who needed to abide by the designated start and end times. He also kept his voice at a good level so that everyone could hear. I'd definitely take another tour with him. We were in DC for a weekend and signed up for three DC by Foot tours. We did the Capital Hill and Library of Congress Tour, The Lincoln Lincoln Assassination and the Embassy Row Tour. Each tour was excellent and our guides were very informative. The Capital Hill and Embassy Row tours were during the day and the guides did their best to find shady areas for us when possible. The Lincoln Lincoln Assassination was in the evening and it was a really pleasant way to see historical Washington. My family really enjoyed these tours and also the exercise. I've been to DC but never visited the monuments and spent time learning about our Capitol. Becca was enthusiastic, informative and awesome. Even if you've been to the the city before but haven't had a formal guide, I suggest booking it. You meet some new people, go at your own pace and get in a good workout while learning from someone who is extremely knowledgeable about all things DC and American history in general. Also, you're supporting a local full time guide on whatever you can afford. Just remember she's a full time guide and she does work on some of these tours for very little so tip if you can! THE BEST. After visiting for Easter weekend 2019, I was eager to return for more tours during my Christmas 2021 trip. This tour company is truly THE BEST. I was lucky enough to join 2 tours with Becca - the Arlington National Cemetery Tour and the National Mall and Tidal Basin Tour, as well as 2 tours with Eli - the Downtown Holiday Lights and History Tour and the Ghosts of Georgetown Tour. While the Downtown Holiday Lights and History Tour was a bit lighter on history, the 3 other tours were deep dives. Becca and Eli are both fantastic storytellers. Becca told me that she is a historian and contributes to tour development, and boy, do her knowledge and enthusiasm show. I wish I could have taken even more tours with them for the 5 days that I was in DC, but several of their group tours were cancelled due to the holidays, which is understandable. They try to promptly communicate tour changes. If you're in DC and like history and culture, sign up with them. They're great storytellers who have put a huge amount of effort into creating highly informative and entertaining tours. read more

Third city we've used tours by foot in and as always, thrilled with them. Bob was our tour guide for the Arlington cemetery. I had never been there and am very glad we had a guide. Not only is the cemetery huge but bob had all kinds of interesting information on the history, the grounds, who and why people were buried there, and on the tomb of the unknown soldier and its guards. I felt smarter at end of tour. He also gave a great recommendation for lunch after, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks Bob! Kailee (sorry if spelled wrong!) was our guide for the memorials by night tour. We had a large group but she kept control, kept us moving (important since it was cold!) and made herself heard to all. As with Bob, she knew her history, her current facts and interesting information on all the memorials. All while getting to see the memorials when practically empty. Win! read more

We did the 4 hour all-in-one DC tour with Rebecca one day and the next evening we booked the White House Secrets/Scandals with Baglarka (sorry if misspelled!). Both tours were very informative, entertaining, and allowed us to get our daily steps in! It is a name-your-own-price tour, so kinda cool that it's not a set price, and the guides do this full time. Took a Georgetown tour with Colin and it was a lot of fun and informative. The weather was great that morning too! Colin was on time, warm, and knowledgeable on the history and many issues. He pointed out small things, film references, and historical trivial stories make it fun. It was a very good experience! read more
