It was a relatively short walk with a lot of stops and long pauses to talk. Because it was cold I probably would've preferred a little more walking. It would have been really cool to be able to go inside some of the buildings on the tour instead of just looking from the outside. Another thing that might've helped is for the guide to have printed out pictures of the places or people he talked about to help us all visualize the stories. He did show us a couple pictures on his phone, but I feel like I could've used more. The guide was knowledgeable in answering everyone's questions and he was very friendly. The tour was fun and I enjoyed it.

Raleigh Walking Tours started with tours of Oakwood, so I discovered the company as I love seeing the historic houses and the different styles of architecture. Oakwood has Queen Annes, Second Empires, Neoclassical, mid-Victorian Venacular, Shotgun, and Craftsman. I get them all confused but Tricia can tell you about each of them and why they have a certain porch or roof, window and door placement and other features. I've taken the tour enough times I should remember but my mind just appreciates looking at them. The Oakwood tours now are offered a few times in the spring and in the fall when the houses are decorated for Halloween. The spring tours is different from the fall tour so you will see and learn about other houses. The Halloween House and the Nightmare on Elm Street houses are part of the fall tour. Besides the Oakwood tour, Raleigh Walking Tour has many other tours. The tours all have different starting points, and you are provided with detailed information as to where to park beforehand. The True Crimes and Curious Tales is my favorite tour. You get to learn about different crimes that happened in Raleigh and some strange happenings. I also enjoy art and street art has been something I look for so there are mural and public art tours as well. Raleigh has a lot of it, and I wouldn't have discovered as much as I did without the tour. But just seeing it is one thing and on the tour you get to learn more about it. A new tour is at Raleigh Iron Works. I did not know of the history of RIW before the tour. I just knew of the mixed use development that opened. But it had been a steel company with a fascinating history, and in WWI was a munitions and artillery shell plant. The buildings are neat to learn about then there is art to see on this tour too. Then there are Haunted History, Ghost Tours, Women's History Tours. I feel like I am forgetting a few others. But there are a variety of offerings. If you want to take a tour, just register on the website. Tours are pay what you think the tour was worth. If you are visiting from out of town or a local, you will learn something new on these tours.

Historic…read moreOakwood is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Raleigh to gaze in amazement at many Victorian and Queen Anne dream homes. The neighborhood is a National Register of Historic Places and is North Carolina's largest, intact 19th Century residential neighborhood. These dream homes belong to many wealthy and artistic homeowners. Each home makes you feel like you've stepped back into time centuries ago never losing the beauty of the house's true age. During the holidays you can expect for each home to be all decked out. Oakwood is home to Jesse Jones and the famous " Halloween Oakwood House". A true spooky sight to see each year in October. The Walking Tours are an excellent way to learn about the area and get your steps in. Tricia was our tour guide and she was wonderful. She was organized and provided lots of details prior to the event. Parking is plentiful in Oakwood and we started the tour at the NC Medical Society. Tricia has a talent for what she does and shared amazing facts and history on each home and business. Her knowledge on architecture was impressive. We walked the blocks of Elm, Lane, Oakwood, Person and Linden learning the history of homeowners like Annie Brantley. You make a donation at the end of the tour and pay what you see fit. Andrew is great with questions and helped explain so much of the history that helped build Cary and helped explain its significance in North Carolina. Did YOU know that Cary was the location of the FIRST public high school in North Carolina. I didn't! I really appreciated Andrew's enthusiasm throughout the entire hour. If you're a local, book your tour now! If you're a transplant, book your tour yesterday! I can't wait for my next tour with Andrew or one of his associates. He has truly built something special. Highlights - Great place to walk, run, bike or walk your…read moredogs - Restaurants and places to get a drink are not far off the Strollway - Old Salem section is great - Runs from 4th Street to the Greenway The Downtown Strollway runs from Salem Avenue, past Old Salem and into downtown, ending (or beginning) on 4th Street. Great trail for walking, running, walking the dogs or riding a bike. The Old Salem section of the Strollway is a 5 star. The trail takes you right past Old Salem. You will pass right by the Old Salem Visitors Center and the Heritage Bridge. You can cross over the street using the bridge and visit Old Salem if you like. The trail in this section is wide enough for all people coming and going. If you follow the Strollway south you will end up at the Greenway, which you can take to Winston-Salem State or Salem Lake to the west, or Washington Park to the east, but that is another review. You do have to cross over a busy street (Salem Avenue) but there is a nice wine shop on the other side. The northern route past Old Salem takes you to downtown and ends at 4th Street. This takes you under Business 40 and past Corpening Plaza park. Nice part of this section is you end up right into the heart of all of the downtown restaurants on 4th Street. This section requires crossing 3 streets in downtown. The only reason I don't have the Strollway rated 5 stars is the section running under Business 40 can be a little sketchy. This will change after the Business 40 renovations are completed.

One thing I didn't like was you weren't able to buy individual tickets online, you had to purchase 2 or more -- thus making it difficult for me to tell party goers to buy their own ticket. I understand why, but it was also a little inconvenient. We had a group of 6 and then 2 other people accompanied us. Unfortunately, it is currently June and hot as balls here. We also booked right when the governor made it a requirement to wear masks due to COVID, so policy for the tour was you must wear a mask... even if you're outside walking. If you don't have a mask, you have to buy one from your guide and they're $5. Lame, but whatever, keep everyone safe, right? Well, the tour started at the Fayetteville train station and went from there. I honestly feel like it would have been really interesting had our tour guide been more enthusiastic. He was very hard to hear, even with a megaphone, but also didn't really have a good practiced script and kind of stumbled through the entire tour, leaving me questioning how well he actually knew the information... then basically asked for tips at the end and left us feeling obligated to give him something. Would I take another tour from someone else? Perhaps. Is it worth the gamble? I'm not sure. I just didn't feel the magic, sorry!

Clients of the tour thought we would get 30% off of food and the cafe staff seemed to have no idea what we were talking about.
