The Law Firm of J W Stafford - Jay Stafford

Even though I am an attorney and thought the complaints to be baseless, not being familiar with the intricacies of the professional licensing disciplinary process, I felt it advisable to have competent representation. I found Mr. Stafford and after consultation, engaged his services. Throughout the process, which was unnecessarily protracted due to the inefficiency of the licensing agency, Mr. Stafford and his staff were professional, supportive and most importantly, effective. Should you find yourself in need of defending yourself against a professional license complaint, I wholeheartedly encourage you to consult with Mr. Stafford.

In my effort to deal with a character and fitness matter, I contacted his firm and retained its services. Anyone who knows the challenges of dealing with character and fitness matters knows that it is a difficult process. I informed Stafford of the limited resources I had to cover the process, and explained that I had a pending job offer that was reliant upon the quick resolution of the matter. Unbeknownst to me, and without discussing the matter, upon my retaining his services, Stafford immediately reached out to the committee and postponed the scheduled hearing date (which had already taken a significant amount of time to schedule), delaying the matter indefinitely. When i reached out to ask why, he cited the need to prepare. Despite my concerns over the delay, he never secured a new date, but rather kept pushing for a delay of over a month. During that time, he billed me exorbitantly, and produced nearly no discernable work product. By the time my frustration boiled over, he somehow managed to bill me nearly $5,000, even before a hearing, and before any work product was provided to me. It took me a month to realize that he was delaying so he could run up the legal fees, whilst doing next to no work. His retainer was $15,000. After I fired the firm from my case, I contacted a more experienced firm that charged a $2,500 retainer, and billed me only for the discernable work it did. Even after a month of representation, and after the hearing, the total legal bill came nowhere near the $15,000 retainer charged by Stafford, and was just over the total of $5,000 that J.W. Stafford charged me for doing next to nothing and causing a month-and-a-half delay in proceedings. Luckily, my employer was patient and understanding. But it significantly delayed the process, and it caused hardship to my office, which had already put my on the schedule. It was truly disheartening to have reached out to J.W. Stafford's firm in a time of need, only to find that the firm was more interested in billing than helping me resolve the issues I hired it to resolve. While it cost me $5,000, I ended up with a truly trustworthy attorney who did amazing work. However, to think that a firm, which holds itself out as being familiar with character and fitness challenges and the stress and angst they bring, would take such an approach, is still hard to believe. I would not recommend J.W. Stafford's firm to anyone.

Made me do everything possible myself because I made the mistake of telling him I had done paralegal work in the past. It never occurred to him to obtain a copy of the Animal Control Dept report taken the day of the incident. I told him I got the report and his response was, "Oh, good idea!" You think? I asked him to help me to find an expert witness, and he screamed at me, "NO! NO! YOU HAVE TO FIND SOMEONE!! I'M NOT UNDERTAKING TO PAY FOR THEM!!!!!" He refused to put together an agreement that would provide that I would pay for the expert witness. He then loudly repeated twice that he was "not undertaking to pay for" an expert witness. He then suggested I call the hospital where the plaintiff was treated. That's not how it works. I contacted four different expert witness providers on Google, and every single company said they worked only with attorneys, not parties to lawsuits. I had to send him information from Maryland's judicial website about how to introduce evidence, which he did not respond to. It took me another couple of emails to get him to explain how he would introduce the evidence. Like pulling teeth. I settled the case in large part because I had zero confidence in how he would represent me in court. I couldn't have hired a worse lawyer. This Golomb character should be out of business.
