Dealt with Johnathan Isaacs in a divorce case. I'm sure the ex thinks he did a great job. What…read morereally happened was that the attorney padded his pockets by dragging them out unnecessarily. He refused to negotiate, told my attorney he was proud of his reputation for going to trial. It should have been simple. There were no minor children, and we'd already been to mediation. Often, he did not consult the ex and independently made decisions. Many times those decisions were not in the best interest of his client. They were singly to pad his bill. My team requested renewal of a third party agreement so I could manage the mortgage payments. He refused stating "he did not know what it was" and "he was not inclined" to ask his client to do it. This could have resulted in the home going into foreclosure because, without it, the mortgage company would not discuss the loan with me, even though I'd been paying it for almost 2 years. I wasn't listed on the mortgage document. He was unethical. I'd gotten an appraisal in anticipation of the settlement. They insisted on doing another one, even though the first one was barely 4 months old. My team and I thought they'd come to their senses about getting another appraisal. It had been at least 2 months and they had not brought it back up. They did not signal their intention until a week before the settlement hearing. I was given some dates and selected one that fell on my day off. He attempted to force me to take time off from work by insisting that it be completed on a weekday. The day he selected was the day of the settlement hearing. This assured the report would not be ready for the hearing and the case could not be settled. This prolonged the divorce and padded his bill even further. The difference between the two appraisals was minimal. It wasn't quite $2000. Only half of that figure would go to his portion of the equity settlement. The net gain was not even $500. ($2000 - $1000 (half) - $600 (what the ex pain for the appraisal) net gain approx 400. I'm sure Isaacs gained more for his bill than this. He refused to negotiate, true to his statement at the onset. At trial, he performed like he was onstage while the judge, bailiff, and I rolled our eyes. I'm sure the ex thinks he did a GREAT job. Truth is, he got nothing more than the law allows, and I was willing to give up to get rid of him. What it DID do was pad the legal bill for the ex. Instead of a quick settlement, it was 3-4 months of legal fees. The only difference between what happened during the hearing and a timely settlement was the amount of money the ex paid to Isaacs. He took advantage of the ex being an alcoholic. He constantly threatened to force the sale of the marital home. I believe this is why he would not negotiate. He thought he could scare me into compliance. Not only did he pad the bill, he thought it would pressure me into doing what he wanted. It didn't. By then I could have cared less about the house. I just wanted to be free. After the hearing, he insisted on authoring the decree. We allowed it because it was less work for my team. However, it required just as much work because it was riddled with poor grammar and errors. This was not a surprise because at the hearing he, after having corrected information provided months earlier) still proceeded to provide incorrect information. At one point he'd even put the wrong case number on the divorce documents. I was doing a refinance for the home. My attorney communicated that she would draw up a new deed. Isaacs drew up one on his own after hearing this, had the ex sign it, and proceeded to state that I could pay him $375 for his services. Maybe the other attorneys in this firm are good, but Isaacs is being reported to the Maryland Bar Association for his behavior in this case.
