I actually did not know a whole much about IKEA. The brand was very foreign to me. I heard of it, but was unfamiliar with it's scale. Like the rest of Adelaide, I had to check it out. All new, shiny and plastic. Oh yes, walking through the maze that is IKEA was quite wonderful. I then started to notice something. It is not only the deisgn of their products that make IKEA successful, it is also the design of their stores. Do you ever find that when you go to IKEA you end up taking home a shoe horn, dish brush and a new mirror that you don't need? You end up having to go fetch your car to drive into the bay to load it full of stuff with a $2 icecream in your hand. I am always left saying huh? How did that happen? Over the years IKEA's appeal went downhill for me. I have had furniture and items break. What I have always been impressed with is the 3 month return policy. So, if you are not happy you can take it back for store credit. That is a plus. What do I usually get in this store now? Water glasses, plastic tubs, glass jars, curtains and maybe linen. That suits me fine. Every now and then I might get a decoration of some sort, but I have to really like it. I recommend IKEA if you are on a budget. It was awesome while I was at Uni. Try and look for the solid wood furniture if you can. They last a lot longer than the chipboard stuff. It's great that they have started to use solid pine now! Also, here is my HOT TIP: If you want to get furniture from IKEA and want it to look a little special and not just from the catalog, check out a website called IKEA Hacks. It is full of ideas for turning IKEA products into something really cool and unique. Also, don't feel like you have to use their door knobs and hinges, you can get cool antique ones from thrift stores or salvage places to make the furniture look more funky!

It has three rooms full of anything shabby chic and as for retro/vintage there is nothing actually here from that era it's only based upon. There's also a children's room and a garden or outdoor room as well. They offer a Bridal Registry and an Interior Decorating service and best of all a free - yes free - picture hanging service. The space itself is massive and once served as a 1920's Melba Picture Theatre. Located in Stuart Road at Dulwich, I recommend wandering through on a Sunday afternoon to take in the sights. When you're in there, don't forget to look at the beautiful old ceilings - they're as gorgeous as many of the trinkets and pieces you will just fall in love with.

But a pair of shorts for five hundred? Sure, pocket change for you brokers and people with old money. What beautiful homewares they have, gorgeous lamps and paintings and sculptures, the only consistency being no two things are alike and yes, you pretty much could close your eyes and point and find a gorgeous antique chest or a marble sculpture of a blackbird and want to take it home so bad you nearly weep. I will never look at Ikea the same again. This store is glorious and completely unattainable for the likes of me.

If you have a really huge family this would be a great place to look as I saw a couple of 10-12 seater tables. Not on the cheap side mind you, but polished beautifully with reupholstered chairs. As soon as I stepped in the store a bell went off which alerted a small old lady who came and asked me if I needed any help. When I said no, she gestured down the stairs where there was a lot more furniture to see. I think this would also be the sort of place that had rotating stock so you might need to check up on it every month or so.

Just imagine the grand homes of Prospect, Unley, North Adelaide and the like, all will have some marvelous pieces and if not passed down in the family, may eventually make their way here and live on in someone else's home. Cedarwood, Mahogany, Oak, Blackwood, Maple and even Huon Pine are just some of the types of wood the furniture is made of and manufactured with traditional methods, a rarity nowadays and completely out of reach for the average wage earner. Prices can vary from affordable to sugar daddy no holds barred, so if you're in the market for furniture especially for an older home, this is a good place to visit. It was an epic distance to travel for us but after doing my research online for a latex mattress this seemed like a good place to visit....Pooraka here we come! Town and Country make and sell either 100% pure Dunlop Australian and New Zealand Latex or a combination of Latex and Viscoflex Memory Foam top mattresses. They also have a range of flexible slat base beds to suit. Available in various sizes and can also customise the mattress to suit needs. Slat beds only as they are the best for latex to breathe. And they suggested flexi slats because you can increase or decrease the firmness of the mattress by adjusting the plastic tension system on the slats. Yes this sounds like a good place to go. We were the only customers in the store and we had the salesman's absolute attention. He was really quite good as he discussed with us the benefits of memory foam and pure latex and advised not all latex was created equal. An interesting point he mentioned was the fact that when the latex mattress layers are bound together as two separate layers stuck together, you don't get as hot as because the two negate each other when you're sleeping on it. Short of buying one, I don't know if I can believe this as it's contrary to what every other bedding place says, but then again none of the others' sold pure latex mattress, there's other 'ingredients' in the mix of the layer composition. Grrr. We found the prices to be on par with another bedding place we visited, so it was no great saving but on the other hand Town and Country deal with Dunlop an Australian Latex registered as Latex Gold, compared to the imported Latex from Thailand alot of the other stores deal with. We could also have a bottom layer of firm latex and the top layer as memory foam, whereas at the other stores we have to select from their named range only...and it's much more expensive, in fact double at some places. And again it's really tricky as each store has their own range manufactured to their specifications, so there is no way to compare apples to apples!! To be sure we went back to Forty Winks Mile End, as it was my first port of call on my bed adventure and wanted to compare the memory foam Tempur mattress, which was the one I got steered towards in the first place, but it's mega expensive - despite the current sale. My hubby doesn't like latex or memory foam as it was for my benefit he persisted in coming and he loves me (awww) so the option is clear...two separate mattresses on the one base which will give us a King size bed, or two long singles on individual bases, which equates to a King size - plus we can push them apart when we have a tiff, he, he,he!! So in short, what we've learnt from this experience and to suit our needs, it's the above option. Sure it would be cheaper to buy the one mattress as a whole, but it won't meet individual needs, so it's the next best thing despite costing more (but not a great deal), for a bed that should last over 10 - 15 years...a small price to pay for spending half your lifetime in bed, may aswell be comfortable.

(smell a latex glove, then times it by a million and try to sleep on it) I have a $2400 100% natural latex mattress that occupies our spare room and we cannot get a refund for it even though it is still brand new, because the only fault with it is that it smells like latex. Yep, that's what we bought !! It's been 18 months now and it still stinks really bad. Very sad, and a waste of money. If I can warn others of this major fault and stop them from going down the latex jargon path like I did my job is done. Buyer Beware

Why bother travelling to mammoth shopping centres, pushing and shoving your way through the throngs of people and giving hard earned dollars to mass marketed chattels, instead support your local community and get to know the locals. The prices are reasonable, the staff are friendly and helpful plus offer to buy items in specially if they don't happen to have them in stock. Located in what was once considered an outer suburban dare I say 'country town', it has transformed judging by the growing number of quality housing estates popping up and thriving population. There will certainly be no shortage of demand to fill new kitchens with the latest gadgets and everything in between to fill the gaps. Also, not forgeting that last minute gift this place has an excellent range to choose from, a little something to give and not show up empty handed. My Kitchen has rescued me many times in the past and it's a good excuse to go there and pick up something for me too!

It is well priced, and good quality, and fits easily into pre-existing kitchenware. The shop predominantly sells crockery of all kinds, and makes it part of a sophisticated home decoration without over-emphasising it. They have some gorgeous large feature display bowls and plates, which are quite pricey but I've almost convinced myself are worth it. Their one frivolous section is in the left corner, where they have a cute range of china sets, with little teapots and pretty cups and saucers. I often consider these for my mother, just so I can see them in use. Sadly, they wouldn't fit into my house. There is an odd range of very sparkly jewelry on a centre table, which I find a little out of place, though some of it is nice. There are other oddities like colourful kids' chairs with matching umbrellas, and scented fake flowers. It's always interesting to see what's in here at any given time.
