I grew up going to an amazing library where the children's section was magical, full of books that helped your imagination soar. The library was an important place to pass the time. And as I grew up it was a place for projects and study. But, as an adult and bookstore giants came into my life, I went to libraries less and less. I'm in a season of life where frugality is important to me so I'm desiring to visit public libraries more often with hopes to find a similar magic as what I experienced as a child. Except, my magic now is different from then. Work space is important to me now. Fremont Main Library is in central Fremont near Lake Elizabeth. I haven't used it to check out books in a very long time and with online and digital books, it's easier to download from home, but there is nothing better than touching a physical book that creaks in the binding when you open its covers. But, I'm here to do some work and be out in the world while I do without spending any money. Perfect place for this! Connection: Wifi is great! Just select the library, hit connect and you're in the game. Space: Two floors. There is a nice map in the entrance hallway, pointing you to the different shelf sections so you can find what you need. Check out is automatic now. The Main Desk is super helpful if you have any questions. There is very comfortable cushioned seating with really long tables (LOVE) (and single spots) around the library. The AC is quite cool, so if you run cold bring a sweater. If you run warm, the air will feel amazing! And if you're super lucky, you might get a table by the window with a stunning view of Mission Peak. The parking lot has a lot of spaces. You. might even find a shaded spot under some trees. The library is walking distance to Lake Elizabeth. Fuel: No food in the library. I see water bottles at other tables so I suspect water is fine. The only issue I have with this library are the hours. I wish it had full 10am-9pm hours like many other libraries. Those are the hours I grew up with, making library entrance accessible for everyone no matter their lifestyle and life limitations. read more

The only library in Fremont where you can register for an Alameda County library card to access all Alameda County libraries and online resources. So cute, they offer a mini library card you can hang on your keychain. It's big, with two floors, and includes clean restrooms, meeting rooms for community events, a plant seed library, study rooms, a children's section, printers and computers, and a makerspace for 3D printing (must sign a waiver beforehand). Sometimes a book sale. It's not that fancy, with no cafe inside like other libraries have in the rich area. Most of the books are outdated from the 2010s; only a few novels are updated to the past few years. I wish they offered more up-to-date design books on topics like User Experience Design and AI, which I read as a refresher in multimedia design. You can borrow up to six books for over two weeks, and they automatically renew the next return date. I prefer to read three per month to be considerate. Scanning several books at the kiosk is easier and faster than a checkout line. They do have great access to free online resources such as audiobooks, music streaming, Hoopla Digital (Netflix dupe), and full access to magazines and newspapers without subscriptions. You can also use your library card to get free passes to certain museums and galleries across the Bay Area on Discover & Go. Sometimes they might have National Park passes to Yosemite, which you have to check with the library first around May. Plus, they offer free seminars like resume writing from Ohlone College, filing taxes, and family activities for kids. There's even a glasses donation box courtesy of the Lions Club International. Lots of parking in front with easy access to Lake Elizabeth, pickleball courts, and the Fremont Police Department. I also love that they provide a library locker near Irvington Community Park and Warm Spring Community Center, where you can pick up books that you reserved online with your library account, which is so convenient to walk to from home. You can drop your books in the return box next to the lockers. I don't have to drive to the main library to avoid silly children and encounter homeless people lying near the return box. read more

Wish I knew and visited this library with my kiddo before. My son is 1.5 years old and started to love reading books and listening to me and his teachers book reading to him. We have lot of books at home but he's bored of them. My friend recommended we take my son here and I am so glad I visited today. The play area for children is super fun. There are tons and tons of books. Didn't get to browse as I came only an hour before closing. I really wish their weekend hours are longer. 5pm is early. I am a huge book nerd myself and read hundreds of books in my teen years. Library is my happy place. Happy that my son is enjoying books as much as I do. Will visit again, get membership and start lending books frequently. read more

Just an FYI to other parents. Do not bother bringing your child to Thursday morning toddler storytime unless they are age 1 or 2. I tried bringing my 3 year old to storytime, we arrived 20 minutes prior to the library opening, stood in line only to be told my child is too old for their storytime and their curriculum is designed for only 1 or 2 year olds. It's a storytime, you're reading books and singing songs, and you're denying a 3 year old from participating? No where on your online listing does it state an age restriction. It's an age recommendation not restriction. If you are restricting to certain ages then please update your posting so you do not waste people's time. It's already enough effort getting our children ready, taking them to the library and arriving early only to be turned away. We will NOT be returning to this library. I recommend checking out the Newark, Hayward downtown, Hayward weekes or Milpitas library all as alternative options. They have great storytimes that we have attended before without any issues. read more

It's been years since I've been to the library but I needed a place to work and don't currently have the best home office set up. I found a perfectly sized table, with a comfy chair, easy access to an outlet and free WiFi. The A/C was perfect. I had a productive few hours in a comfortable, peaceful spot. I was also within earshot of the member services desk and the staff was consistently helpful, kind and patient. I like this library if you're trying to get things done. It's fairly large, with two floors, so even during the weekend you're likely to find a spot, even if you might be sharing a large table with others. It doesn't feel cramped or stifling. I even got a view! They also have book sales in the lobby every now and then, with a good selection and plenty of great lighting (seriously, it's a nice lobby). Staff are friendly. If you need a break, you can walk a few blocks down for a snack or small eats at some of the restaurants nearby. For a breath of fresh air, Lake Elizabeth is just around the corner and there are several small park areas nearby. Peaceful location with lots of resources! read more

I moved back Alameda County after a small hiatus to Santa Clara County. I hadn't been back to this library for almost 10 years. So since I started getting back into books, I wanted another option to pick up books if I'm trying to binge read a series. I knew that my old library card (which I got when I was a small child and my handwriting is super cute y'all) would most likely be deleted from the system. The person at the library did say that every 3 years they do a purge unless you have an outstanding charge still on your card. So I went ahead and did my library card application online which gets you an e-card and you can start using Libby with that. But to put holds on physical items, you do need to stop by a library and get a card. I walked into Fremont Main Library and funny enough...it kind of looks the same except now there are digital return slots (outside and inside) as well as your normal book drops. Then you walk through and now instead of folks checking out books there are multiple self check out stands. But EVERYTHING else....the same. Even the smells. It still smells the same. You know...that book smell. Anyhow, I easily got my card at the center area where folks are actually sitting to help people and I was on my way. Excited I can use Alameda County again. read more

Going to this library allows me to reminisce the days that I was a grade student where I can find and borrow books that my schools don't have. I remember when I usually come here back in 9th grade when my group and I had to do a project about recycling back in 2012. 12 years later and few things have changed. They installed kiosks to allow customers to checkout their books. There weren't as much books as usual, but there are still plenty of them. It's still a good place to study, read, and relax. The second floor is better since it provides a better atmosphere when it comes to doing that. I also came here today to donate books that I used to read when I was a kid and probably some I used for my school projects. It's a good library for Fremont residents especially for students who need to borrow books for school assignments. read more

I love to sit in my little nook in the library next to the large window. You can see the view of small green hills and paths where people walk or bike. Very therapeutic and the smell of books also bring me so much joy. The staff is kind and helpful whenever I have to look for a book or put something on hold. I regret to admit that I really took this place for granted as a kid. At least I've grown to really appreciate this library and all the wonderful services it provides. Each time I visit, I find that I learn more about what the library has to offer. Books. Duh! Audiobooks. DVD's. Seeds!! Craft kits for kids and seniors!! Activities and classes for people of all ages. The librarians are extremely helpful and have guided me to what I've been searching for and more. They are up-to-date on helpful library apps, reading apps and more. I especially appreciate... well, everything! But to be more specific, on my most recent visit, one librarian showed me where classes were located on the website. She helped me register my elderly mother for a Japanese flower arranging class, "Ikebana". On another occasion, I couldn't figure out how to download an audiobook with the Libby app, and another librarian helped walk me through the process. Libraries are such a valuable resource. Stop number (??) on my library review tour and it's a good one! I love the Fremont Main Library! Libraries are my favorite place to go to get some work done in the middle of the day so naturally, when I found myself in Fremont between meetings, I headed here. There's lots of parking at this library, especially in the middle of the day. I was able to snag a space right up front with no issues. They also have a few spaces reserved for drop off only if you just need to return your books real quickly. This is a pretty large library with two levels. When I went, downstairs was a little more empty, maybe because it's more of the teens/kids sections and I went on a weekday during school hours. I found a nook by the window and took a virtual quick meeting with no issues. Love that it's right by the park so there's lots of places to walk around outside too. It was actually a busy library day for me: + FINALLY got my physical library card! This library is part of the Alameda County Library group and I got an e-card for those libraries years ago for the Libby app (highly recommend for kindle readers). Since I finally made it in to one, I decided to get my actual card. Their staff made the process super easy and fast. I got a regular size card plus one to put on my key chain. Did you know you could borrow up to 100 books at a time?! Crazy. + Printed some documents! Card members get 10 free black and white prints. I needed color prints which were $0.35 each. I was trying to figure out how to print from my USB directly on the printer, but you'll actually just need to print using their computer. It wasn't until after I saw that you could do wireless printing. I'll have to try that from my laptop next time. + had to cut some name tags out and thankfully they had a paper cutter! Granted, it's an older version vs the guillotine style ones, but it got the job done. All the while, the staff was super helpful in answering all my questions about how to print, where to find this, where to find that, etc. Be sure to check their calendar for upcoming events too! read more

The library is a bit old but they have made some upgrades, including how to return and check out books. You can book study rooms for about 3 hours, and it's usually really quiet and you can get work done. I just wish the library was open longer hours and earlier, but other than that it's still good as it was growing up. Maybe it could have a bit nicer furniture and cleaner, but still pretty large and good. read more

The library plays a great role in the community. It has a grab and go crafts program, offering seed kits for butternut squash and long beans. Inside the kit, there are seeds, a coloring page, craft instructions, planting log and recipe. It has something fun for families in summer. Unfortunately, the experience has gone down in quality in this library. I have been visiting this library for over 20 years. In the past, it was cleaner, and there were not some questionable individuals walking around (want to be sensitive to the unhoused, but there are some people who are disruptive to others or bring a large amount of belongings inside). Also, the staff were very friendly and social. During the current wave of employees, no one on the first or second floor desks have said hi to me. In the past, I would say hi to them and sometimes have a friendly exchange, even if I didn't need something. Also, several of the same employees have been repeatedly beyond rude - saying offensive things about me, within earshot or as I'm looking at them. For example, one woman said I was crazy, a loser, etc., as I was trying to work on my laptop. I reported this to the manager, and while she was very nice, she had seen any of this, so she did not believe - because it is quite unbelievable - and did not take any action. Today, as I was walking towards the ground floor front desk, to the stairs, the middle aged woman with bangs was talking with a middle aged white man and they started saying offensive things about me, including "yeah there's a lot of ____ here" (shady people). Some of these people should not be in a position that requires interacting with the public. They have created an environment that is negative, and reflects their own unhappiness. I don't think you should be afraid of verbal abuse when you go to your public library - this isn't prison, it's a family friendly place. read more

Such a cool place! I'm fortunate enough to have a library card in the Alameda county system and I've been itching to check this branch out. It impressed me from the moment I parked to the moment I left. Much, much bigger than the Union City library and it contains more selections. I spent a good 45 minutes browsing the aisles and the new books section AND that was without visiting the upstairs non-fiction area. The fiction area has a lot of selections, there is a large kids section on the right hand side of the building and a large selection of large print books, audiobooks, CD's and movies. Again, not to compare with the Union City one again but there is just so much more to offer at the Fremont location. The view is gorgeous and I wouldn't mind pulling up a chair facing the sunny window. Such a nice library! Very impressed. Entrance was welcoming and it seems organized. read more

The children's section is amazing! I brought my 8 year old grandson and my 4 year old granddaughter who were visiting from another state. That turned out to be a hit! They have such a large section with tables of toys and coloring and even a small play area for the little ones. My grandson got his own library card and we went home with lots of books to read during the week. read more

The Fremont Main Library is adjacent to Lake Elizabeth. The library is just over a half a mile walk from the Fremont BART station. I have been car-free since 2004 & living in Oakland in the East Bay is perfect for this lifestyle since we have great public transport along w/ walkable neighborhoods. In Fremont felt a bit of a culture shock since walking from the Fremont BART station to the library not many pedestrians were walking about as many people were driving in a multi-lane freeway so was quite different to my urban abode in Oakland. Fremont feels quite suburban yet it isn't just any suburb as look closer to find a highly diverse place w/ a large East Indian population as Fremont has heaps of authentic Indian restaurants along w/ many other authentic restaurants from various parts of SE Asia. Upon entering the Fremont Main Library I looked above to see to giant signs "Wisdom" & "Knowledge". It is true knowledge is power & the pen is mightier than the sword. I was able to get an Alameda County Library card here by showing my photo ID & piece of mail addressed to me in CA. My Alameda County Library card allows me to access not just items at the Fremont Main library yet also at Irvington branch also in Fremont, Newark, Niles in Fremont, San Lorenzo, Union City, Dublin, Centerville in Fremont, Castro Valley, & Albany near Berkeley. The crest jewel here is their Bollywood movie DVD collection as they have hundreds of different Bollywood films both new & classic ones from different eras. This is easily the most Bollywood films I have seen in one place & I have spent quite a bit of time abroad in India. An exquisite collection! On the second floors there are several study rooms, all of them happened to be occupied w/ students studying. Outside of the library there was a Tai Chi class happening. My sister and I started coming to this library pretty often since it's the most decent one nearby us. The Newark one is the closest, but that library sucks so I avoid going there. This library has several study rooms (about 8-10, i think?) in which you have to get there right at opening time to secure one in the lobby area. Otherwise, there are different areas where you could do study. There is one area on the 2nd floor that is a "quiet area." Bathrooms are okay; not a fan of the "hands air dryer". I prefer a paper towel dispenser so that I can use the paper towel to open the door. But I can see how this would be wasteful, but sanitary wise-- I'm just not a fan. Sometimes, it does get noisy especially if you're sitting closer to the side of the entrance area because of the kids downstairs so that's why it's wiser to sit to the side of the back of the library would be quietest. read more

Love, love, love libraries, especially this one! I consider myself beyond lucky to have the main library in such close proximity. I started coming here when I was a little girl and when this library first opened. The previous main library was in a teeny tiny location, behind the current location. The old location is now what is currently the city's community teen center. We would go to the library once a week and then of course when I got older, probably more often. Prior to "the Google", this was place to get your information for school projects and to meet with classmates for group projects. I remember the first time I went into the main library for the Grand Opening and I was in awe!! Soooooo many books in one place, the possibilities were endless. Cue the scene from Beauty in the Beast where Belle gets her own library, and that is how I felt. Any bibliophile can attest that was the true love story in the animated film. But let me continue with the review.... The library has made many changes over the years and some things have stayed the same. I can go on and on about the changes but I have enjoyed the advancements in incorporating technology to the experience. Shout out the staff in the library during COVID where they kept us reading. The library was closed but you can request material, the staff would grab your items requested and you could come pick up in your scheduled appointment. I have always had a great experience in the library and with the staff, they have always been so helpful to me. You can still request items to be placed on hold, especially helpful for the super popular and new releases. You can also download Libby and link your library card to the account so you can get material and other things like courses and music experiences on your phone, kindle, tablet etc. The library offers many programs, community events, informational sessions, book sales, and they even provide different monthly seeds to harvest a garden and so on... I go to the library about every ten days now and I truly enjoy the first of the month where I can see their displays and the books associated to what is being celebrated during the month. I know funding can be difficult to attain, but it would be nice if the county considers maintaining regular upkeep on the building and the parking lot. There are a lot of things that can be upgraded. It would hurt my heart to see the building become more and more deteriorated. Libraries are such an overlooked resource in the community and they need to be treasured. read more

Teens volunteer at the library for various activities. The library lists how many seats are available to volunteer and we have to book in advance to get a seat for volunteering and it is hard to find a seat at the table when there is a lot of competition for certain activities. In some cases, while we volunteer, number of kids volunteering for that activity exceed the seats listed at the beginning. Looks like some kids get preferential treatment and attend activities without booking at the beginning or find some other way to sneak in to that activity. There is no proper reasoning given by the library staff why the number of people exceed the original number of seats. Since there is tough competition for certain activities, often we don't get to volunteer and wanted to raise awareness to the common public and hence putting this post. read more

My first time at this library..... I canNOT believe what I just experienced. So the library doesn't open until 1p, so when I arrived (12:45) there were a handful of people hanging out near the entrance. As 12:55 hits people started getting in line by the door. I asked myself should I be polite and just wait or should I too, get in line like these experienced library people? As more and more people gathered by the door, I decided to join them. As 1:02p hit, the door opened, I swear I saw Black Friday Circa 2015 flash before my eyes!!! People, including little bratty kids were running, I mean sprinting through the library, I'm guessing to reserve the private study rooms upstairs. Apparently I wasn't fast enough because some little kid totally beat me to one of the study room when I clearly was walking towards it. I now learned my lesson, its Everyman for them self, and I will be throwing elbows next time, trust! All bullllshhhh, aside I ended up finding a nice table with access to an outlet and a window view in the corner of the library. In comparison to the daycare UC library, this library is actually quiet and I can actually get studying done. My goal for next time is to make it fast enough to a private study room. This library offers adequate lighting so you don't fall asleep. The temperature is perfect, not too cold/too hot, and there are plenty of tables where you can spread out with out feeling claustrophobic. This will be my go-to study spot from now on... read more

I have been coming to this library for last 8+ years. This is one of the best libraries around. Located adjacent to the Central Park and Lake Elizabeth. Very large, spacious library with amazing book collection. Fiction, non-fiction, graphic novel, toddler books, technology related.. etc..etc... you name it, they have it. It covers 2 floors. Ground floor is where you find the fiction and no-fiction collections. You will find some awesome reads for any ages here. Only thing is, you just have to be patient enough to find the right location. You can always reach out to the employee at the desk and they may point to the rack in which you may find the book. At times, you may find books are a little disorganized - most of the time it's waiting for the volunteers to come and sort the books and place it on the shelves. There's a separate section for all the brand new books as well. Adjacent to that you can find their best attraction - DVD/Blu-ray collection of Hollywood, Asian, Bollywood and non-fiction topics. This collection is pretty marvelous. There's a separate DVD collection for kids as well. It's crazy that they have covered almost all my childhood favorites in their collection. Sometimes you can find different used books available for sale as well. First floor has different rooms available for studies, homework etc. I guess, you need to be touch with the staffs to use them. Never used any of those, I may be wrong about this though. Apart from that, there are bigger rooms which usually conduct different programs for public and kids. My kids have attended many such sessions - STEM related, movies, robotics etc. I used to see pamphlets of adult programs as well. Near the kids book section, there's a nice area where they often do story time and other programs for young kids. Trust me, they are wonderful programs. We have been a beneficiary of these programs which engages kids and encourage them to start reading. You can checkout the notice board for schedules and pamphlets of different upcoming programs. They have a small play area for toddlers and a few computers for bigger kids to play some educational games. Please check out the recommended reading pamphlets located near the kids book section. They have some great suggestions based on grades/age - both fiction and non-fictions. They used to conduct reading programs during summer. Nice way to encourage kids to read more. Kids will definitely love that. Second floor is where you can find more study rooms and specialized books. You can check with the staff at the desk to find out where to locate books you are looking for. They had provided the option to borrow laptops for your work; not sure whether they still have that post-Covid. You can avail free wi-fi while you are inside the library as well. Checking out and returning from this place is so easy. If you have the library card, there are plenty of stations you can scan your card and checkout the books. It's hassle free. The return was an issue in the past where you either had to wait in line or use the drop zones. But they have changed it couple of years ago. There are 3 return stations these days to scan and drop the books while returning. You can use them even after library hours. That's the best part. I encourage everyone to use that as this one sorts the books and collate them - less work for the staffs out there. They still have the hold and pickup option (which they started during the pandemic). Check the websites for details. It's a damn good option, you don't want to spend more time inside the building searching for books during this Covid era. Last but not the least, they do book sales at least 3-4 times an year. Don't miss that, you can get some great books in that sale for very cheap. I have a small library created at my home for my kids from the books I have bought from the book sales. Watch out for the announcements. They haven't done that last year due to Covid. But I am hoping that they will continue that program from this summer onward. Sometimes I am surprised to read some negative reviews about this place. But for me, this place have been good, no I would say great. Staffs here are awesome, friendly and super helpful. Plenty of parking as well. Never had a bad moment here, except some crazy people acting weird. I used to spend 3-4 hrs in the library every week in the past. The library has a big selection of kids books, BUT be careful if your child accidentally rips a book because you will get a warning notice with a picture of the damaged book you will be warned if that happens again you will be charged. My little one and I have come accidentally books that have ripped pages. Well, overall, it is good. But the children area to some extent makes you feel annoying and disturbing, some stupid uncultivated teenagers can talk loudly even shouting, feeling like no body around, and like being in their own family living room. Screw the tutors with annoying blah blah around the children's area Send your kids to after school, this is library, not after class Library staff even don't give a shit about their behavior! The basic feature of being silent and not disturbing others for a library is missing here. I mean who the F are you, just releasing your stupid banal human nature in a public place which supposed to be quiet and easy. Your parent and teacher didn't tell you to behave and being polite and quiet in public places like LIBRARY ???? Freedom doesn't mean bad mannered, uncultivated and ill bred. read more

I LOVE LIBRARIES. I grew up in Fremont but have been away for the last 7 years, recently came back and decided to get a library card again (also I'm currently in broke post-grad student life stage, and I really don't have any money to even buy used books nowadays, anyone feel me?) Context: I'm 24, pretty educated, I like reading adult fiction, biographies, and memoirs (I've also recently been loving books written by comedians). This library is really great but if you're looking for something in particular, be prepared to set aside a little time to look for it. Most of their books aren't super new ( I want to say that I've rarely encountered a book newer than 2016 in the biographies section), but they do have a wider selection of books than most of the libraries in Fremont! (makes sense, this IS the main library after all...) They have a really great DVD collection though! Honestly, this is an amazing place if you don't want to spend money redboxing, especially if you're looking for older movies! A lot of study rooms and available sitting space if you're looking for a quiet place to study/be productive/ get some work done. The staff is all really nice too, which is really great. Super friendly and ready to help. Upstairs there's a ring of computers (mostly older folk doing work - super cute!!!) The teen section upstairs is pretty bare now compared to 7 years ago, but I guess kids these days go to their school library (growing up I used to literally check out all the Inuyasha and other manga from up here!) The biographies and adult fiction is downstairs, pretty easy organization, mostly hardcover! If you browse carefully you can find some really awesome stuff! (can you tell how freaking enthusiastic I am) My most recent great finds are Diane Guerrero's "In the Country We Love," Aly Raisman's "Fierce," A Dog's Purpose, and "Now You See Me 2" and "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" on DVD. THE ONLY CON I see is that if you're downstairs, it's pretty loud in the kids section (it functions more as an after school kids hangout than a library), the ceilings are high in this section and you can hear a bunch of kids screaming, crying, laughing, yelling, reading, you name it. So I would suggest getting a table upstairs if you're looking for a quiet place. Other than that, super great. The library check out system is extremely easy to use, the self checkout is really fast! You can also renew your books online (they expire after 3 weeks) by logging into your library account. EVERYONE SHOULD UTILIZE THEIR LOCAL LIBRARY, IT'S ONE OF THE GREATEST FREE ESTABLISHMENTS OUR COUNTRY HAS. STAY LITERATE EVERYONE. read more
