The crawfish pie was piping hot and bursting with flavor, and the yam loaf was one of the best pastries I've ever had in Louisiana. I was at the local university last week and stared up a conversation with the head chef at their cafeteria. I figured he would have some recommendations on the local food scene. Surprisingly, he said that the best food in town was in a gas station. Really? If that was the case, then I'd definitely need to try it out. I knew of the place, as my hotel is literally right behind it. Since I had all day to burn, I played some disc golf at the university and then headed to the gas station...er, French Market Grill for some lunch. Walking in, the first thing you see are two glass dessert displays. They have pies, cinnamon rolls, cookies, etc. I must admit that I was very impressed with the spread; however, I wasn't here to satisfy my sweet tooth. Moving on... I'm fully aware of the meat pie frenzy this small town seems consumed by. I've had them and I've heard about them almost everywhere I've been. I saw that this place also had pies stuffed with meat. I also noticed an item called boudin balls. I have heard of these before and was intrigued. So, two spicy meat pies and a boudin ball order it was. The gentleman who took my order was very nice and super friendly. I paid and took my order back to my hotel room. I'm not one to eat a lot of fried foods, but I wanted the full Louisiana experience. I enjoyed the extra spice of the meat pie, but I wasn't a big fan of the boudin. In fact, it didn't sit well with me at all. After an afternoon to think about what I'd say with my review, I've come through my conclusion. I wouldn't be willing to say that this place is the best restaurant in Natchidotches. I do think they have some positive things going for them and I can also see why my new acquaintance said he enjoyed it so much. It's just not my favorite way to cook, but there are plenty of you who like this type of food. If you are in the area, then I'd definitely tell you to give this place a shot. It's a rare experience to eat at a collective 4 star Yelp-reviewed gas station restaurant. There are probably not that many of those around this great country. I love stopping here anytime I'm driving between Dallas and Baton Rouge to see family! Also low price of gas and can always get a tasty snack. Everything was great on the go-food - especially for a gas station. However, the etouffee was not good at all - I'd stay away. The rice was watery and there wasn't very many pieces of crawfish! I also ordered a special cut meat pie, but they forgot to put it in my bag. By the time I noticed I was 20 minutes away so didn't turn back. It also took a very long time to my order. The pie was premade and only needed to be heated(the missing pie), cake was premade, so the only thing needing to be cooked was the pickles. It took about 20 minutes. The ladies that came in after me ordered dinner and got their meal before I did. So long wait combined with the missing food, took away a star (to be fair to the other businesses I have reviewed) BUT, they have were so so friendly. The version at French Market would be considered exceptional in either town. It is an airy twisted french brioche baked on site. REASONABLE WINE PRICES Again, among locals I know, "making the trip out there" for wine is worth the reasonable prices. I bought a 1.75L Woodbridge Cabernet for $10.99. I've seen the same bottle at Rouses's for $3.00 more. So July 6, as we were coming back from New Orleans again. We had to stop and get some of those delicious crawfish pies and gas. Yes we bought 5 boxes of the crawfish pies. So now as of today July 9, 2022. Nice place to stop while on road trips. They have lunch plates and daily specials. The gumbo was decent. It was cool to try fried boudin balls, but they were just okay. They're known for their meat patties and they were just okay as well. The ordering process is quite chaotic because you order and then go to the register to pay before you get your food. The person at the register has no idea what you ordered and there are other people checking out who didn't order food.
