Great Camp! The kids are so talented. There are so many things for kids from 7-17. Well staffed, great food & all they can eat. Lots of adult counselors. I attended French Woods for 3 weeks in 1987 and my kids have just finished their third summer here. Amazing camp! The leadership is the same now as it was then and they do an incredible job. Last summer my kids both got sick and the camp doctor called twice a day to give updates. Every year at visiting day we try to attend the upper camp shows (even though our kids aren't in them) because the talent here is so amazing. Campers do everything from creating costumes to running lighting, sound, stage management, and playing instruments in the productions, and they are shockingly good. There is excellence but also a very laid back vibe. My kids have made friends for life as well as fiber art, jewelry, short films (which they shopped, wrote, filmed, etc.), they tried waterfront activities like boating and tubing, tennis, fitness, cooking, circus, horseback riding, skateboarding, and one of them wanted to join a band but there just wasn't time. My kids had a lot of fun mostly because no one was paying attention to them. My 7 year old showered 3 times in 3 weeks. Both the owners and director would scream at kids on a daily basis. The camp is run down. You will lose half your clothes that you send. The counselors have very low morale because they are getting screamed at too. They do a poor job of keeping the boys and girls separated at night. The older campers are having sex. There were multiple used condoms in the parking lot. There are better camps in the area!! Children are routinely denied medical care, my child's bunk had multiple children vomiting. No calls made home. Counselors make sexually inappropriate comments to campers (including my 8 year old). Camp is Unsanitary, unsafe. My child was forbidden from accessing email or calling home. Camp out of compliance with multiple health code regulations for NY state. Horrible experience. Food is unhealthy, place was unsanitary. Head of camp apologized and offered a BOGO for next year or to apply a portion of the cost towards their shady charity, which I refused. Counselors are scared of management, the owners Ron and Beth are really terrible people that try to scream and shout. My children were yelled at every single day during their meals. The shows are a joke. Go to Stagedoor if your kids are Into the performing arts. Avoid this outfit at all costs. read more

Oh, French Woods, how I miss you. I attended French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts for three weeks in the summer of 2005, and I have to say, the experience was unforgettable. Though it is mainly a performing arts camp, they have everything you could possibly imagine in terms of activities and specialties. To ensure that campers really get to hone in on things they want to spend more time doing and also to ensure that campers get to try new things, the camp has a major/minor system. The first full day of the session (each session is 3 weeks) is six-minor day, when you audition for musicals, dramas, instrumental and choral ensembles, as well as attend callbacks. Six-minor day is also used for swim testing (that also includes water-skiing, surfing, kneeboarding, wakeboarding, etc.). When you arrive at French Woods, you pick your three majors sometime within the first three days of camp (including the first day of the session). If you are in a show, that counts as a major and a minor. Minors are activities you pick every morning during breakfast that give you an opportunity to try new things. Departments range from competitive team sports (basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, hockey, lacrosse, etc.--some of French Woods teams compete against teams from other camps), visual arts (drawing, painting, graphic design, photography, jewelry, traditional crafts, ceramics, tie-dye, silkscreen, stained glass, leather art, etc.), circus arts (acrobatics, firestaff, clowning, etc.), theatre (musicals, straight plays, costuming, puppetry, acting/audition technique, on-camera acting, play/screenwriting, etc.), dance (ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, modern, swing, pointe, bellydancing, etc.), music (ranging from choral, a cappella, orchestra, concert band, rock shop (where you can form a band and use their recording studios), videography, radio, magic, rocketry, and the list goes on! I have been going to French Woods for 5 years. Going to camp is my favorite part of the year. The camp counselors are so kind. They is an activity for everyone! The musical theatre program is so amazing. The shows are broadway quality. The circus is my personal favorite. You can do stuff that you would of never imagined doing at home. I sent my two children to this camp. It al looked fine when I dropped them off. There were problems: my 12 year old son was hanging out with teenagers and participating in an activity designed for older kids. My daughter could not access any cash despite my leaving more than suggested. I didn't realize the biggest problem until I arrived to pick them up. When I walked into the once clean cabin of 10 year old girls, I was repulsed when I saw the conditions in this building. No one had enforced any order. The abject filth in this place was mind blowing. I would not only NOT recommend this place, I am not put off by kids' mess but I ended up leaving everything she brought with her except her stuffed animal and some photos.
