Frog Park is located in the lower Rockridge area of North Oakland and is also right under the freeway, Highway 24 to be specific. It's definitely an original idea to have this park next to and under a freeway, the basketball courts are directly under it. Not sure how I feel about playing hoop under a freeway!! There's also a kids play area here, and the Oakland DMV is within walking distance down the street!! read more

Such a cute and fun park for the kids! It's huge and has 2 playgrounds! We had a ball!

Had heard so much about frog park. People kept raving about it and pics looked good. I have been on the hunt for a good clean park with a nice playground and clean toilets for my daughter's upcoming bday party. But as soon as we landed I didn't like it :( I really wanted to love the idea of frog park and I love that they are using this area for a good purpose but it's right below the highway and it sucks because of so much noise it creates :( I don't know but my idea of children's park is in a quiet area with lots of greenery for them to enjoy. Frog park has some decent space a nice wood chipped playground and 1 decent bathroom. But that's about it. I don't feel good about coming here for a casual day or a party. I wish Oakland had more amazing parks such as Berkeley has. Sad :'( read more

Frog Park is hiding in plain sight under Highway 24. there's not much happening here. it's for the kids and the dogs(park adjacent to Frog Park). others may find this place pathetic. it's an innovative use of land that's not commercially viable. amendities: play area (swings, slides) for young kids. slide are for older kids, olde trees, benches, grass area. just street parking. many strollers noticed, obviously from the surrounding neighborhood. read more

The park structure and toys for children are great, lots to do that challenge your kiddo's body in different ways. The only complaint which knocked two stars off, is the lack of child supervision. There were children running over and grabbing my children or toys she was playing with, lots of close calls with wobblers under swings, and wandering children crying. I notice many adults were busy on their phones and missing a lot of important child interactions that could have allowed the children to learn better socialization skills. I don't think I'll come back with a toddler but the park itself is beautiful and engaging. This review is based on a summer, weekday visit. read more

Something to know is there are two locations, Hardy and Redondo. Their website says Redondo is for little kids, so that's where I ended up. I've heard a lot about Frog Park and I was really surprised that it was empty. Then I saw the homeless tent just to the side. One of play structures was stuffed with stuff. I thought maybe the homeless person was using it for storage until a cell phone rang from inside and someone answered. This park isn't big enough for my kid to not run into the occupants. This park looks abandoned by the neighborhood. Now I know why. read more

What do you do when your friend, her hubby, and their twin girls come to town...? Why, you simply Yelp the park closest to the place you happen to be having lunch. Frog park popped up, and away we went. The park is oddly named, as there are no frogs to be found. There's a giant turtle sculpture in the sandbox - upon which the twins sat with their mud pies, singing happy birthday to each other - but not a frog in sight. There is, however, the world's coolest jungle gym. The suspension bridges, spider webs, peepholes, castle turrets, and tunnel slides of your youth still exist here. Hide-and-go seek is awesome beneath the architecture of this fortress, and there's even a tiny trampoline tucked into one of the hidden corners atop the structure. Lest your mini companions get bored, there's a wide swath of grass for running races (a word of wisdom: lose on purpose - every time) and a swing set. Frankly, it doesn't matter what your age - this place rocks. read more

Commenting on the park. We learned about it through a nanny who briefly cared for our child and regularly took her here to play. Once I visited, I was disgusted with the state of the park. The play area is small and the equipment appears to be poorly maintained. Additionally, there is an encampment of unhoused people abutting the park. I understand that the entire area has a terrible infestation of large rats, which is not surprising given the location. I think there are better alternatives nearby. read more

I used to come over here a lot since its right next to the dog park. After going to the nearby farmers market, I decided to bring my son here. For a nice Sunday morning, this place is packed which is expected. I like that there are certain areas for everyone, few slides, the train side, the sandbox with the large turtle in the middle, etc. My son really loved it and I loved the fact that he can play and socialize with other kids. I dont have a kid. I wouldnt ordinarily have any reason to go to this park, but when my friend surprised me labor day weekend, and brought up her 18 month old daughter, I realized just how unprepared I am in the bay area to entertain children. Enter the coolest playground I've seen in ages. So many twists and turns and slides, and even a little river to play in if you don't mind getting wet. I wish i had a reason to come back here frequently, or I wish i was 3 feet tall. Either way, this would be a go-to spot for sure. read more

Frog park makes me want to be a kid again. I take the kids I nanny here often and they absolutely LOVE it. The stucture is nothing like I have seen. It is like one giant tree house. Hide-and-seek will keep them busy for hours. The other cool thing is that they have this pond they fill up when it is hot and the kids go nutzo over it! Make sure you bring a change of clothes. I didn't give this park 5 stars because of two reasons. 1, there is no bathroom. There is a porto-potty, but when you have a 4yr old and a 7month baby, you need a really bathroom and a sink. 2, I don't love the location. It is under the freeway and if there weren't loads of people around it would be sort of sketchy. The dog park next to it is sort if weird too. read more

So many ways to play and develop skills. Swings and rotating tire on the other side of the grassy area. Park: grassy area for throwing or kicking balls. Water play: shallow rainwater pond (not stagnant) with rocks and tree roots to step on. Bathrooms: was a porta-potty, but now an actual bathroom structure. Cute little park. I wouldn't consider it a destination. I'm a big fan, because it's 5 min. drive from us, but I wouldn't drive 20 min. to get to a park like this. The wooden play structure is pretty awesome, but it's more appropriate for older kids. My 1.5 year old kid still needs me to hold her hand and help her get up the stairs and through the maze. I'm 5'3'' (115 Ibs), and I can barely fit through the kiddie holes. A larger parent would have a hard time following their kid closely through some parts of the structure. It can also get overwhelmingly crowded in late weekend mornings. I leave at about 11 - 11:30 when the place starts to get full of older kids. What distinguishes this park from other parks with toddler playground is: 1) Larger, nicer, more complex wooden play structure with lots of nooks and crannies for the little ones; 2) Sand area; 3) A little creek with water - on a hot day, kids can play with water 4) Doggie park right next to it, 5) Open grass 6) Convenient parking (If you enter through Hardy St.) Unfortunately it doesn't have infant swings, though it has big kid swings and a tire. My 1.5 year old toddler really loves the swing but I get nervous putting her on the big kid swing. I like this park and I'm glad it's near our house. It's also convenient to access when going to the farmers market at the Claremont DMV on Sunday. read more

Park is nice. It has lots of mazes underneath the wooded play structure that allowed my 2 year old to run around and never get bored. He loved the "tunnel slide" and got on it about 40 times during our visit here. There was lots to keep the kids occupied: a spider web for the kids to climb in slides swings a tire trampoline, wooden bridge small sandbox with sand toys and a BIG TURTLE in the middle lots of climbing thingies tanbark Hope i didnt forget anything. This was a pretty cool park! The only reason i did not give 5 stars was because it was very hard to keep an eye on my son due to the structure of the play area and also the wooden bridge was cracked and a screw popped up when we walked on it. It's worth the hunt to find this tiny local gem of a park. Great wooden structure is a treehouse, a train, with a maze, bouncy bridge, and rubber spiderweb. But it's really all about the sandbox. I could leave my 16 month old son there for hours. There's no bathroom here, and it's not entirely enclosed. But I like that there is a bigger kids swings and play set . . then there is the treehouse/sandbox area for the toddlers. Parking is limited, in a cul-de-sac. read more

Great little park! It's a wooden play structure full of twists and turns and slides. We took our LO here a few months ago and she seemed to like going down some of the slides. The swings are located a short distance away. There's also a little sandpit with a turtle statue. Lots of kids were there on a late Thursday morning. Is there such as thing as the "Cadillac of playgrounds"? Let's see, we've got big kid swings, open space. (A few, but not many) picnic tables in the shade. A gigantic, winding, kids-can-get-lost-in wooden play structure. Several slides. Monkey bars. Old-school wooden bridge. Lots of areas for watching adults to sit and chill. Did I mention lots of surrounding trees and shade? The topper for me is the small sandbox area with the mosaic turtle in it. Several past visitors have left sand toys, and my daughter loved it!. read more

A most delightful park tucked under 24 freeway. The play area is reminiscent of a super-fun treehouse and there's even a sand pit at the far end. When it's a warm day and there's water in the "creek" area, kids love to kick off their shoes and splash around, toy boats/space ships/dollies/lovies in hand. I'm not 100% on board, but what are you going to do? There are several swings across the way and a nice patch of grass for frolicking. On to the restroom facilities. Porta-potty grossness. At the time, I convinced my 3-year old to bush it for a number two, and doggy bagged it---way easier than negotiating a clean break from a rank public toilet, but I digress. It seems that the trash can receptacles are always overwhelmed with lots of garbage, especially stinky diapers. It's a good thing that they are a ways from the play area. read more

This is a lovely park with really nice non-generic play structures. Someone put a lot of thought and care into designing it. Our kids had a great time there, and we will be back. Unfortunately not everyone who visits seems to have appreciated that. Got the info about Frog Park from Yelp...It was easy to get to, parking in the surrounding neighborhood was easy, and the park play structure was FANTASTIC! The parents AND children were friendly and well behaved. The grassy area was well maintained. There was just enough pathway and sidewalk for the kids to ride their tricycles safely. The only downside to Frog Park is it is almost DIRECTLY under the freeway! So it is noisy and gosh, with all the land around us do we want to take our children under the freeway to play???? I will probably go back because it was in a great neighborhood and the kids absolutely loved the sand box and play structure-but the freeway really bothered me. read more

Not a good place for toddlers. Came here on a Sunday morning. Place was packed - there seemed to be more adults than kids, but somehow several big kids who were too old for this playground were running pell mell with no adults to tell them to be careful near littles. I had a heck of a time getting to my 2yo when she scurried up a ladder that I didn't know was there (lots of space are tight with poor visibility). When I managed to find an adult sized way through to her, she was near a wooden bridge with broken slats. And she ended up with a bunch of insect bites up her pant leg - spiders? lots of cobwebs on the structure - and the welts are still visible 3 months later. read more

I would NOT recommend this park for kids under 4 because it's literally a maze of jagged contraptions and outdated equipment. I don't know how else to describe this playground besides old, dangerous, and strangely out of place within the affluent community of Temescal/Rockridge. I could understand the nostalgia for this park, but on the other hand I don't think it's worth exposing kids to a dedicated area of unnecessary risk. The playground has one main structure and a few other play areas sprinkled throughout the compact park. Main Structure: I admit the main playground is impressive with how much woodwork was involved. You can clearly see the dedication and craftsmanship that went into its construction (30+ years ago?). It feels like one giant fort with many directions to take at every turn. It's multi-leveled with tons of exits/entrances so I can imagine it's fun for kids who have good footing and intuition of their surroundings. For kids that do not, like kids under 4 or so, it's really just a wooden deathtrap of things to run into or fall off. I'll give a few examples. There is a neat rope-bridge type thing that looks safe because it's suspended within an actual solid bridge, but it's so damn steep and slippery I witnessed a few kids (and even some adults) violently slip down it and narrowly avoid hitting the back of their head. On the lower levels of the main structure, there are broken boards falling from over head that are right around blind corners. They are splintery and have nails sticking out, so it's bad news if some kid actually runs into one of these. Speaking of the lower level, it's riddled with stuff like that, exposed jagged wood, nails, DECADES of spider webs, and it's all intended to be an area for small kids to playfully navigate. Toddler Pit: Yeah, there is a dedicated area for toddlers but it just amounts to a literal sand pit with some random used toys in it. There is a granite-looking turtle statue in the middle, but I wouldn't want my toddler slipping on that thing and eating sh*t on the hard rock surface. There aren't even stairs into the pit, it's just a big drop that I imagine you're supposed to lower your kid into. Really outdated stuff. Also, I'd like to add that there are feral cats living throughout the playground. I saw a few duck into one of the many crevices. Just something to watch out for, especially if your kids are playing in the sand pit (if you know what I mean). I'd say this park is most fun for adults to geek out on, and for kids that are like 10+ years old. Otherwise, I'd hope the community considers rebuilding it with the same spirit and dedication. read more

This is a great park to go to if you live in the area but not a great park to travel to if you live at least 30 min out. We found the park under the highway. When we first saw it, we didn't think it was it. After circling around twice and going to see the park, I recognized it from the Yelp pictures. The little fort for the kids is nice and since it's fenced in it keeps the kids in. The rest of the park though... There's a basketball court and some swings under the highway. Not great at all. Parking was a bit difficult and we had to drive around to find a space on the street. Again, great neighborhood park if you live in the area but not something to drive out to. read more

Cool park if you are local. I brought my kids to this park from San Leandro because some mom's recommended it. It is a lot smaller than the pics led on. Definitely a unique park with a very cool fort like play structure. I wish there was water in the small creek area. We came around lunchtime on a Friday. Had to take 880 to 24 and of course there was traffic. For being middle of the day it was pretty busy with toddlers. Can't imagine on a weekend. My kids liked it and I wish we had a playground like this closer. The park doesn't offer enough variety for us to make the drive over. Great neighborhood park, I'm jealous. At first glance, you might wonder how desperate city parents are to take their kid to a few swings under a freeway next to a fog park. Walk in further and a cute little playground emerges under the trees. There are several areas for kids to be kids: open grass, swings, hoops, stream/splash area, and a playground with sandbox, climbing/exploration structure for 2-6. Picnic benches are nearby as well as plenty of adult seating. The park is active through the day and into evening with strollers, dog walkers and kids. Parents are friendly. The public rest room is pretty bad. Dirty and no running sink water or paper towels. read more

Took my sister and her toddler here yesterday. My niece loved it and so did we. Lots of fun places to play and explore. The park was clean, kept up, and easy to find. I liked that there was plenty to do (three sized slides, "tree" fort, bridges, climbing wall, sand area, swings, dry "river", grass, and so much more; so kids weren't all "fighting" or crowed around the same things. Whoever built the wood structure and further more this whole park really understands how little kids like to play. We'll be back.
