The huge dog was the lasting impression and the young man who was so nice to chat with me! This was another shop that surprised me inside- it was huge and had beautiful displays!!! I had to lap the building a few times just to decide on a piece! John helped too and was also impressed with the sweet baby girl we met! She is the best greeter! I loved the studio space in the back- you can see through the window! You know I was peeking at what was in progress!

My dear friend Kathy said i would like the work and she was right! I love crystalline glazes, textured surfaces & varied surface decorations & I could get all of that here! I settled on one cup, sweetly decorated with flowers. Simple, elegant & it felt wonderful in my hand! The gentleman was very sweet too, he knew i was in town for conference & this was a quick stop & a great find!

If you are and artist or an art enthusiast, you truly need to make the trip to StarWorks. I wanted to enter though the front- there is a giant sculpture out front that was already dazzling me before I made it inside! Walking through the giant front doors- the gallery/shop space inside was incredible! Art everywhere- pottery, glass, metal and more! It was overwhelming! I browsed and John came over with the look- like he knew he was stuck there, lol. I happily sent him through the double doors to find the tap room. Go enjoy beer, while I skip around and explore this place! Behind the first storefront room, there is another gallery space set up that is part gallery and part museum and throw some science in there too. Great information on local clays. Starworks is also a clay supplier- with local clays. Behind that space, there is the hot shop- glass blowing. Live demos are going on throughout the day and they had numerous glory holes and annelears. I was nerding out since I took a couple of classes for glass blowing and know more about the process than the average person. I saw that over the summer they had John "Sleepy" Moran working in the hot shop!!! I was so jealous. Downstairs- I joked it was the dungeon, you find the pottery everything. They have the testing studio, studio for residents, gally space, kiln room and outside- more kilns. The pottery supply store is downstairs on the backside of the building too. I snagged some pottery tools and went home with wild clay! The new Catawba clay! A mossy green look when wet- I bought some for myself and two fellow potters at home and I am grateful I will be back in March so I can grab more!!! I befriended one of the Residents and bought a couple of sake cups from him direct. Things I didn't explore- the metal shop. My sculpture class at school was metalworks and I love metal pours! I also know they have theater space- but I can only guess that was upstairs. There was also a huge event space in between the main store/gallery and the tap room. We had to walk through it a couple times. They were setting up for a fundraising gala that evening! They hold huge events here- you should check them out if you are traveling near here. You never know what you will find! My only suggestions- I think the bathrooms need an artistic makeover- I went into the one on the taproom side & more artsy t-shirts for Starworks. They had some generic ones, but they weren't in my size. I can't wait to stop back in!!!

We tried to go on a Wednesday at 4:30 and passed the owner as he was going out to the roadside sign to change the sign to closed. No worries- we made it back on Friday before departing and I was thrilled we did. There were lots of little pots I wanted but one particular glaze combo reminded me of a night sky or the spots on a whale shark. John was in agreement that it was our favorite! Truly- the mug I bought is a favorite from the entire trip! WhyNot add this shop to your stops on the pottery tour?!? You should!

Vases brightly glazed and with intricate cutouts. Funky art that is just plane fun! I was told by other visitors to allow myself time to adjust to all the bright colors- but for me it was to adjust to how much they have packed into the space! There was just so much to see!!! Carol greeted me once I came through the door and her excitement just fed my own excitement! Carol and her husband have been doing pottery for over 31 years and started their business in Florida, only to move to Seagrove and bring their unique art to the pottery community. The two mix their own clay- a secret recipe of their own that fires at a wildly unique temp! Cone 1- if you know- you know. Fascinating conversation! John saved me from having to pick a piece of art to take home by spotting a wall plaque with a kitty- in their signature bright glazes. She is already hanging just inside my front door! I had seen that she did a collaboration with other women potter's in the area for a big fundraising event & the figures she created have this powerful, regal feel. Goddess, empress, high priestess... she has several in her shop of various sizes in addition to her lovely bee themed series! She's a bee keeper in addition to a potter, small business owner and who knows what else this powerhouse has going on! I remember being so impressed the first time I met her. She took me right out to show me her kiln she was unloading! Turns out, we share a common friend outside of Seagrove. Michael Cottrell. My school professor! They go way back. Very small world. Christy at Triple C even called ahead to make sure they were open! I do love rural America. Not only did i find something, we also traded & she snagged an extra piece from me.
