Definitely a favorite from this trip and I am visiting again in a few months and this will be on the list to return to! This studio is phenomenal and a couple of generations in. The anagama kiln and the new one being built out back are impressive. The studios for processing the local clay, throwing and glazing all had individual spaces in historic buildings. I fist loved the chime bowls hanging out front on the porch, the shelves outside full of the sons work. Inside I was stunned by beautiful artistry. I love trees and that was a continued theme in this shop. The soul bowls were lovely too- a concept beautifully brought to realization by the artist. The behind the scenes tour was just the icing. I bought 2 pieces and struggled immensely trying to choose. One carved tree wall plaque and one woodfired bottle with a tree carved in. Thank you for the meet and greet- and I might snag one of the bowl chimes on my next visit! read more

History

Established in 1986.

Michael has been making pots in the Seagrove area for more 30 years. A former newspaper reporter, he now lives in Westmoore, six miles south of Seagrove. He grew up in Miami, Florida, and moved to North Carolina in 1974. While attending N.C. State University, he wrote a couple of stories on potters while working as an intern at the Enquirer-Journal in Monroe, NC. Michael took a couple of pottery classes at the university and didn't find a means to pursue his interest in clay until moving to Asheboro in the early 1980s where he worked as a reporter at The Courier-Tribune for several years. He and his first wife, Jane Braswell, opened up Wild Rose Pottery in 1986, after they both took classes at Montgomery Community College in Troy for a few years. Michael opened up his current shop in 1998. He has three children: Wil, Chelsea, and Levi. Both Chelsea and Levi make pots, their work is for sale at Michael's shop. Michael lives with his wife, Mary Holmes who is from Limerick, Ireland

Meet the Business Owner: Michael M.

My latest passion is wood firing. When subjecting my work to the reckless meandering of ash and flame inside the wood kiln, there is an edge where I teeter. Too much to one side of the edge or the other and my pots can be ruined - muddled with too much molten ash, reduced to boring vessels of brown clay. I am inspired by using local unprocessed materials to create pieces and enhance the surfaces.
