The anagama kiln and the new one being built out back are impressive. The studios for processing the local clay, throwing and glazing all had individual spaces in historic buildings. I fist loved the chime bowls hanging out front on the porch, the shelves outside full of the sons work. Inside I was stunned by beautiful artistry. I love trees and that was a continued theme in this shop. The soul bowls were lovely too- a concept beautifully brought to realization by the artist. The behind the scenes tour was just the icing. I bought 2 pieces and struggled immensely trying to choose. One carved tree wall plaque and one woodfired bottle with a tree carved in. Thank you for the meet and greet- and I might snag one of the bowl chimes on my next visit!

I loved the pottery shop and was peeking into the studio area- Ben was in there working and came out to chat with us. I had already picked out a couple pieces of pottery from inside the shop. And I was greeted at the shop door by Elvis meowing at me! I reached down to pet him and the girl working the shop told me he was begging for food. Lucky Elvis, I had kitty treats in the car! John chased me into the store when he saw me grab the cat treats, lol. I was able to shop while John fed and pet Elvis! Win, win. I made sure to take plenty of pictures & it turns out- my professor had met Ben when he was in graduate school. Pottery makes for a small world! A must stop on the pottery trail through Seagrove!

I met Nicole back in March, I was visiting Seagrove for NC Potters Conference. They had a meet…read morelocal artists night at the local wine bar and I was chatting with another local when Nicole arrived. She was in the brink of opening her own studio and shop! I followed her on IG & was returning in June for a birthday trip, so I made a mental note to make it to her place. I met her dogs, chickens, ducks & even gave her hubby some tips since he was learning how to turn pots. I bought a lovely dish from her then. Fast forward, I'm still following her on social & a that she has a new goal of building a new studio and shop bigger and better on her family property across the street from the current location. Move that goal post, chase that dream! So, Nicole is using clay from her property to make mugs that she uses a technique called sgraffito, carving through underglaze. She carved these cabin mugs as her vision for the new place and every one of those mugs sold is going directly into the build fund. Her goal, make and sell 100. I'm a very passionate person about the arts, ceramics. I also love connecting with people and adore seeing what other people's dreams are, what they are passionate about. If you are and artist or an art enthusiast, you truly need to make the trip to StarWorks. I wanted to enter though the front- there is a giant sculpture out front that was already dazzling me before I made it inside! Walking through the giant front doors- the gallery/shop space inside was incredible! Art everywhere- pottery, glass, metal and more! It was overwhelming! I browsed and John came over with the look- like he knew he was stuck there, lol. I happily sent him through the double doors to find the tap room. Go enjoy beer, while I skip around and explore this place! Behind the first storefront room, there is another gallery space set up that is part gallery and part museum and throw some science in there too. Great information on local clays. Starworks is also a clay supplier- with local clays. Behind that space, there is the hot shop- glass blowing. Live demos are going on throughout the day and they had numerous glory holes and annelears. I was nerding out since I took a couple of classes for glass blowing and know more about the process than the average person. I saw that over the summer they had John "Sleepy" Moran working in the hot shop!!! I was so jealous. Downstairs- I joked it was the dungeon, you find the pottery everything. They have the testing studio, studio for residents, gally space, kiln room and outside- more kilns. The pottery supply store is downstairs on the backside of the building too. I snagged some pottery tools and went home with wild clay! The new Catawba clay! A mossy green look when wet- I bought some for myself and two fellow potters at home and I am grateful I will be back in March so I can grab more!!! I befriended one of the Residents and bought a couple of sake cups from him direct. Things I didn't explore- the metal shop. My sculpture class at school was metalworks and I love metal pours! I also know they have theater space- but I can only guess that was upstairs. There was also a huge event space in between the main store/gallery and the tap room. We had to walk through it a couple times. They were setting up for a fundraising gala that evening! They hold huge events here- you should check them out if you are traveling near here. You never know what you will find! My only suggestions- I think the bathrooms need an artistic makeover- I went into the one on the taproom side & more artsy t-shirts for Starworks. They had some generic ones, but they weren't in my size. I can't wait to stop back in!!!

We tried to go on a Wednesday at 4:30 and passed the owner as he was going out to the roadside sign to change the sign to closed. No worries- we made it back on Friday before departing and I was thrilled we did. There were lots of little pots I wanted but one particular glaze combo reminded me of a night sky or the spots on a whale shark. John was in agreement that it was our favorite! Truly- the mug I bought is a favorite from the entire trip! WhyNot add this shop to your stops on the pottery tour?!? You should!
