We stayed in St. Roch, Quebec this summer and had to check out the neighbourhood cheese shop…read more Fromagerie des Grondines is great! In addition to selling cheese and other goodies, inside the cheese shop is a counter that makes and sells hot food! We ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with mushrooms, a baguette sandwich, a large poutine and everything was delicious. The cheese was flavourful. The baguette was perfectly crisp and chewy. The poutine was delightful - with lots of cheese curds, sweet corn and veggie gravy. I picked up a bottle of Raw Quebec Honey for my mom and she absolutely loved the deep flavour. I also bought a bag of D'Antan Maple Potato Donuts for myself and the donuts were epic - so soft, great maple flavour yet not too sweet.

It was walking distance from our hotel and a beautiful day! Behold my biggest food dream all in one little shop. We had delicious, freshly made grilled cheeses (including poire et brie), baguette with smoked salmon, perfectly cooked French fries, and even the side salad was tasty. You can also take cheese samplers to go and all the accouterments you could ever want. They had many other unique products like Goat Milk Caramel and smoked trout. Be sure to visit. You will not be disappointed!

A bountiful selection of cheeses. What I found interesting was the wide selection of seasoned cheese curds. With selections such as fine herbs, 3 pepper, BBQ, Rebel BBQ, Cajun Bayou, who would have thought there was a market for seasoned- flavoured cheese? I went with the traditional cheese curds. Bought a $7 bag and can attest the quality is not overly salty but equally squeaky. They have a large selection of other kinds of cheese plus all the stuff you need for poutine and other items such as cheese bread and interesting food selections. A good selection for a Quebec City Cheese shop! Prices are reasonable. It's not France pricing but it's not overly expensive!

I wasn't sure what to expect but was really surprised at the setup. I was expecting a traditional restaurant but it turned out to be more like a fast-food ordering but with various places to sit and eat (booths, a more private area, and a typical eatery). I didn't know they also had an ice cream section but then again I was there for food :) Walking in I was taken by their ad for a "Montreal Burger" and ordered that. Turned out to be somewhat of a Smoked Meat Burger but wow the flavour was amazing! There are a number of other items on their menu that strike my fancy so I'll definitely have to head back and try them out some time :)

First they put a layer of curds on the bottom of the bowl (no where else did this from chain places to supposed old school restaurants) then the fresh hot fries then more curds (A LOT) on that then the gravy. The cheese curds squeaked when you ate them. It's set up like a Subway sandwich place, cafeteria tray style so nothing special inside but who cares with poutine this good? They people inside mostly spoke French but also could switch to English and were friendly. They had lots of tables and booths inside and at least 8 tables with umbrellas outside. This is just off the main route heading back to US border for us going home to CT. Will absolutely be our last Canadian stop now before crossing the border. They also have a cheese and gourmet shop attached and they were selling fresh corn in a kiosk in the parking lot (which you can't take back across unfortunately because it looked great). And everyone purchased these cream filled smallish donuts so we probably missed a trick but we were so over full of sweets and pastries from our Montréal/Quebec vacation we just couldn't get any. Highly recommend.

Of course having a true québécois best friend helps as her family lives in Kingsley so they know the best cheese shops so this weekend I got to try the SQUEAKIEST curd cheese of life. If it's not made right there on the spot it's a disgrace wise words from my best friend. You can get Kingsley or guillaume back home but once it gets transported from fresh to cold and hot and cold and hot it just turns out MEH and loses its beautiful taste. So do yourselves a favour and make the drive to this location and grab a large bag for $8 dollars to go and then take a seat and order a poutine.

The place: You can buy cheese or you can stop by to get some ice cream. The goods: We stopped in and got some cheese - they had a good variety. Obviously we got a big bag of cheese curds, and I purchased 2 different cheeses - the Louis Cyr (awesome) and Le P'tit Bonheur (haven't tried it yet). Normally, I get Le Fin Renard, which is great, but I wanted to try something new. On the way out, we decided to get some ice cream - a chocolate soft serve dipped in milk chocolate for my mom, and I tried the vegan strawberry ice cream dipped in dark chocolate. Oh. My. God. It was so good - I'm sad to live so far away! Service: Friendly Price point: To be honest, you're not getting any deals on cheese unless you are buying the extras (basically they appear to be exactly like the regular cheese, but you get more for a bit less). As for the ice cream, pricing is on par with most places. This place is worth the stop if you are in the area - not only do you get to buy tasty cheese, but you'll take a drive through some truly breathtaking scenery.

I hope to come back in season and check out their varietals of apples and hopefully some of the extremely crunch and ultra juicy and delicious honey crisp. Looking back on one of the great gems of the province of Quebec is the apple orchards that we have in areas of the province. When. I first moved here I was introduced to the fall activity of "cuilleur des pommes" (picking apples) which I believe is the most fantastic family activity for fall. For me this is a right of fall to take a tractor ride take a big 10 pound bag and fill it full of the most juicy-tart apples that you take home to make sauce, pies and apple crisps. Living in the Montreal region we tend to go to orchards nearby in Laval or if we want a treat St Joseph Du Lac. SJDL is the premiere area on the north shore with many orchards and places that do cider also. They do still cider, sparkling cider and the creme de la creme "cidre du glace" iced apple cider. There is also jams, jellies and fresh apple juice available. Most all cideries do multiple products. I've never been to the Rougemont area on the S Shore but I imagine orchards produce similar products. Fast forward to Ciderie et Verger St Nicolas. I had some inside information that this was the premiere place for apple related products in the QC Capital region. So..... I told myself I had to stop by here. After a quick look in their shop they have more products than any of the orchards in the Montreal area that vie visited. Their selections of jams, jellies, fresh fruit syrups juice and ciders is impeccable. On my visit I was fortunate they had some fresh apple sauce. I bought six bottles in large and small. The flavour is unlike any sauce nice had before. It's so silky you could feed to a baby but so tasty it's incredibly fresh. Also they had Apple must- sparkling apple juice made with Honey crisp apples. We cracked a bottle on the weekend and it was the best sparkling apple juice I've had. Not too sweet but so fresh and crisp in flavour. I purchased a bunch of jellies and other products including their iced cider. Folks.....this is the best orchard- cider producer I've visited in the province. Their products I will declare I find are better than anywhere I've had in the Montreal region. It's 15 minutes from the Pierre Laporte bride on the S shore of Quebec City. So damm good I will be back to spend another boatload of money it's that amazing!
