Throughout the pregnancy, she was checking in on us regularly and provided guidance on how to manage the last few weeks of pregnancy. The pre-labor massage seemed to reduce the time I was in early labor and she took diligent time to talk through our birth plan so that we felt equipped for the big day. When the big day arrived, she arrived at the hospital quickly after we alerted her. She coached us on proper positioning and was the necessary resource during the chaos of childbirth. I had a tight pelvis and back labor and she was able to provide insight and direction on what decisions might be best for our specific case. Patti sees the whole picture of childbirth and was able to help my baby come out smoothly and without complications. I truly believe I would have had to have a c-section without her there. My husband and I call it is a p-section (P for Patti). I thought having her at the birth was essential but even more so was she essential postpartum. She spent many hours putting my body back together, working on our baby girl, teaching us massage techniques and breast feeding tips. Our baby had a bad crick in her neck and would roll over to her side at night which made us worried. After Patti released her tense body, she has been sleeping so much better and is able to keep her neck straight. I hope Patti is around for all my future babies births because I can't imagine doing it without her! She is the Mother Theresa of childbirth and has given her life in the service of mamas and babies. She has the most important job in the world and she does it so well.

In nursing school I was introduced to the idea of doulas, and knew I wanted to have the support of a doula. I went off the recommendation of a friend and found my doula and ended up meeting my midwife through her as well. I finally decided to ditch my OB at his 8th mention of c-section at our prenatal appointments. It was definitely God that placed Afua in my life and I could not be more grateful. Afua came into my life at a time that I lost my sister and mom. She was the mother figure I needed providing me with all the love, support, and tough love that mothers give. I love her approach to patient care because it is unmatched by the experience you get in mainstream healthcare. Afua treated me as family, she validated every one of my concerns no matter how silly they were. She guided me throughout my pregnancy, she provided a place for all expectant and new moms to come together and share their experiences and learn from each other and support one another. She has built her own village here in Houston. I am eternally grateful to her for the support she provided to me without fail and without hesitation. I…read morestarted my pregnancy with my long-time OBGYN, but quickly realized that there's a difference from a once-a-year appointment and ongoing, regular maternity care... And a difference in what I expected from a health care provider and what the provider was willing to give. I felt rushed during my appointments, spent the vast majority of the visits sitting alone in the waiting room or exam room waiting to be seen, just to finally get 30-60 seconds with the Doctor who barely looked up from the clipboard to ask me 'everything looks good, any questions?' before heading out of the room. I knew I wanted more personalized care from someone truly invested in my and my unborn child's wellbeing, someone who made me feel less like a number and more like a valued client, who welcomed dialogue and discussion on prenatal and birth options without judgement or a 'this is our policy' mentality. Afua and her team met all of my requirements and then set the bar higher than even I could have expected! Her prenatal care model was thorough with more frequent visits than others, which I really appreciated because as a first time mom I would come up with lots of questions. Having the bi-monthly appointments meant I was checking in on my little ones progress more often than my other pregnant friends, it helped alleviate my fears and anxiety that something was wrong and created a strong rapport with Afua. I really love how easy it is to get in touch with Afua- she personally answers all phone calls and texts, so there's no going through a front desk or multiple midwives to talk to. It's easy, efficient, and really made the prenatal (and birth!) experience comfortable. She also has monthly group prenatals, where other pregnant moms get together to discuss relevant birth and childcare topics, meet new friends, and of course eat!! I love the community feeling and getting to know other moms in the area who are also planning on delivering with a midwife. She also hosts meetings for dads, where the men have the same opportunity to mingle and get/give parenting advice. My husband and I opted for a home birth, and the whole process went so smoothly that I'm still in awe that my daughter is here, healthy, and happy, and it's all thanks to Afua.

I've had PPD twice in the past. I've had multiple preemies. I was terrified in so many ways and she heard it all. When the day came for medically necessary induction, I reached out to Erin. To get my placenta and she came. Even though we called at 4am. And she came to me in recovery and catered to me while she could. Keep in mind, we had no idea induction was going to happen and we hadn't paid her anything at this point. There were complications in surgery. And I didn't learn about them until a day later. By that point, Erin was schedule to drop off my placenta pills to me in the hospital. I learned (before she came) that I couldn't have anymore children. It would be "devastating in the least". We were broken over the news. This baby was our last and we weren't prepared for that. When Erin came, she had with her last minute add on's. Placenta prints, my cord shaped into a heart, herbal concoctions & love. It began the healing process. Never before had I had my placenta encapsulated or the cord keepsake. And she provided healing things for me. The benefits from my pills have been phenomenal I DONT have ppd, my milk supply is amazing and my body and mind are able to heal. And, if you're choosing the midwife route, understand you're birthing your baby yourself, and your midwife is there to help that happen safely. My doula and I chatted about the experience after my son was born, and she said Jackie was great and also gave her the space to focus on me. Example that speaks to Jackie's character. One day during my pregnancy, I swore my baby didn't move very much. I was concerned and paranoid. I called Jackie and she was in Beaumont, on her way to Costco. She told us to meet her in the parking lot and she'd take a listen. We did just that, and Jackie was in the backseat with the ultrasound wand and goop letting me listen to my baby's heartbeat. Having a baby is a big deal. Invest your efforts into finding the right match for you and your family. You'll get so many opinions on who is awesome and who isn't. Frances' compassion, support, education and experience is one that is often forgotten or seldom seen in the medical field. These qualities alone have not only made her family but a major support system for myself and family during one of the most trying times of my pregnancy. She provided me the options, education, and understanding needed to make the best decisions for my delivery when things did not go according to plan. What I will cherish the most, is the love, care, and attention she provided to me during and after my post partum that helped me navigate and fight the daily battle. Words could never express the gratitude and love my family and I have for her in our lives. My only hope is that she does open a Montessori school one day so my son can attend. I would never just trust anyone with my child but this woman has really become a sister to me. She keeps it real and does not sugar coat any situation. She does it in a way that is understandable, does not make you feel guilty or bad about yourself and has the patience of an old soul. My only wish is that my mom could have met her because she would of been so proud of me and the path that I took with Ms. Frances. It saddens me that soon my visits will come to and end but also makes me happy to know that I am beating this battle with a good support group behind me. To know that she would be there regardless of my condition is a peace of mind that money could not buy. As I write this post/review, I am in tears because I am forever grateful for her services. This being my first pregnancy and wanting a homebirth, I would have been lost without her. After having a previous miscarriage, I was worried for quite some time, but her gentleness and knowledge helped me realize and ease to prepare for my new journey. read more

I have no idea where to even start with this review other than, WE LOVE FRANCIS. If you're even remotely considering hiring a doula and you've come across Francis, all the stars have aligned and you have hit the birth jackpot. If you're on the fence or are unsure whether a doula is "worth it" or "necessary" (all things our family questioned prior to seeing Francis in action. Everyone in my family is now on #teamfrancis ) do yourself and your family and your future child the biggest favor and hire her immediately. Not only was she sweet, caring, loving, encouraging and supportive but she's also extremely knowledgeable and informed. She always answered all my questions (day or night), gave suggestions for my concerns, had great literature to refer me to, has awesome contacts for all things birth, body, breast feeding, and baby. She supported all my decisions and helped me to stay confident and believe in my choices and ability to have the birth we wanted. No matter when or what time, she answered and is still (three weeks post partum) answering all my questions. From 28 weeks pregnant to one week over due to post partum she has loved on, supported, guided and assisted my little family into the greatest adventure we've been on. We've been so pleased to walk this journey along side her. We were so lucky (#blessed )to have found her and would hire her a million times over again. Other than choosing to have this sweet baby I'm holding in my arms and choosing to do it naturally , Francis was the most important and beneficial decision we made for our birth plan. Where do I even start! FCFS changed our lives and we are so grateful! My first delivery turned into a traumatic c-section without me even knowing why and so we knew we definitely wanted something different this time around. After meeting with a couple of OBs who discouraged us from trying for a VBAC, we came across Frances' website online. We were sure at this point that we needed to have an out of hospital birth to get what we desired and wanted to speak to a different provider. Frances literally spent a WHOLE HOUR answering all of our questions and addressing our concerns for free. She also asked us a lot of questions about our first labor to make sure she was comfortable taking us on as a provider. We immediately fell in love with how personable and knowledgeable she was. Since her office was an hour away from us we decided to go to deliver at home. Every appointment we had with Frances and Victoria was full of support and never rushed. My favorite trait about Frances is that as competent as she is, she is humble. She will always admit when she's wrong or if she doesn't know something and needs to look into it more. It honestly made us trust her more as a provider. We were able to have our redemptive HBAC in May with the help of the team including Victoria and our doula that Frances recommended. It took a lot of work and trust and we did it! We are so blessed for all the love and care they showed us during my pregnancy and after. I first learned of Frances through a friend from nursing school. I was in search of a doula and my friend could not stop saying good things about her. After a brief meeting with Frances at a local book shop, we vibed and I knew she was it. We met several times during my pregnancy, I always had her full attention every time we met. I can't believe it's already been almost a year since my husband and I welcomed our baby boy into the world! What can I say other than Frances is AMAZING! She is fun, enthusiastic and very knowledgable. After having a c-section a couple years prior, I badly wanted to have a successful VBAC, unmedicated if possible, and knew having a doula would help. When we were interviewing doulas, I felt like I was talking with an old friend the first time we met Frances, and knew immediately that she was a good fit for me and would be able to help us through our birth journey. Frances by our side helped make that dream possible. She was a great teammate with my husband, guided me on how to best labor at home, and even came to our home and helped me productively labor for a few more hours before we headed to the hospital (and I was at an 8 when I arrived!). She helped me get into a zone that allowed have the unmedicated VBAC that I wanted. At the hospital, she continued to guide me and I was able to remain calm but determined throughout the birth of our son. I don't think I could have done it without her. Francis was such a beautiful soul and the best midwife for my entire pregnancy and postpartum experience. She made prenatal appointments such an enjoyable experience and always delivered exceptional level of care no matter what was going on in her personal life. I can't fail to mention that 2 months prior to my delivery date I had to relocate from Houston to Dallas, and Francis still took on the task to serve me and my family with care. If I could give more stars it still wouldn't be enough, to represent what this experience was for me. I'm a mid thirty Black woman. I was terrified of the health care system and with this being the last time I'll be pregnant, I wanted full control. She made sure I was knowledgeable, she listened to me when I told her about my body and not just her experience. She gave my husband a confidence and equipped him to where he was ALL the support I needed. I'm not saying it was easy my little girl was quite in control and aware (like mommy). She came after my due date and at that moment I felt I couldn't do it anymore. She fought with me I had a beautiful homebirth to a 8lb 12 oz baby. My body recovered phenomenally because even after birth and still today, I mattered. I had the most beautiful home birth experience with Fransis and her incredible team of women! After previously having a C-section, I was nervous, but from the very beginning, they reassured me that my body was capable of giving birth naturally--and they were absolutely right. Frances is absolutely amazing!! We were on the fence on whether to even to have a doula and had interviewed several doulas but Frances's passion was what won us over. She is extremely professional but also personable and always accessible. She was so amazing during labor that my entire family (who thought having a doula was silly in general and because I was delivering in a hospital) was blown away with her ability to help me through contractions and keep me calm. This is a very late review, and I have been a bit scattered brained. It has been a whole month since my Birthing class with Frances. To be honest she was AMAZING! I loved everything I learned, she was kind enough to invite me into her home, and give me information that has made me feel more comfortable in with the idea of giving birth and my choice of going with a natural birth. She gave my husband and I information that we didn't even know we needed. I wish I had the means to hire her as my doula, but just taking the birthing class has given me the confidence I need. Frances and her assistant Victoria are a match made in heaven. They literally seem like polar opposites of each other the are the perfect balance of yin and Yang and the best team to have by your side for a safe, natural home birth. It took me a while to find a midwife that resonated with me and that I could trust, and Frances does just that, with her down to earth personality, humor and overall knowledge you and your family are in good hands. It is hard to find the words to describe my birth experience with Frances as my midwife. The time spent during every pre/post natal visit is filled with compassion. You can sense her dedication and love for her job and it makes for an excellent pregnancy and birth experience. The absolute best midwifery service. I can't recommend FCFS enough. I worked with Frances, Bee, and Stacy during my time each literally took care of me and my baby. Jennifer also was amazing and always got me the answers or help I needed related to anything administrative. Pregnancy is such a vulnerable time (for me), the team was so supportive in every aspect. By no means was the journey easy, but the team was so amazing. My home delivery was so special and it's because of the love and intentionality that the team puts in to supporting their moms. I should also say I've experienced a hospital birth, the care I received during my home birth was attentive and individualized. I'd recommend FCFS every time! read more

The only other midwife delivering in a hospital in the Houston area is one that works with Dr. de Ayala at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital. The 6 midwives work together in a group to care for their patients -- because they're the only hospital midwife group in Houston, they do fill up fast so you should call and register with them as a patient AS SOON AS POSSIBLE once you find out you're pregnant. I believe they take only 40 pregnant patients per month. I was very pleased with their care overall as I delivered my second baby. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 stars is just because of the few items in the "cons" list below. PROS: * The midwives treat pregnancy like a normal, natural event -- rather than a minefield loaded with risks and obstacles. They are low-intervention and this should decrease your risk of a C-section. But you can still get an epidural if you want. * They don't order a bunch of extra or unnecessary tests * They already automatically do all the things I wanted in my natural birth plan (such as: you can eat and drink during labor; intermittent fetal monitoring; birthing ball is provided; option to use hydrotherapy during labor -- there's a tub and shower in the L&D rooms; compresses and counterpressure and lubricant to decrease the risk of tearing when you push; pushing allowed in different positions; delayed cord clamping; they try not to break your water artificially unless indicated for some reason & they'll discuss it with you first to get your permission; post-delivery Pitocin is given on a case-by-case basis) CONS: * Parking can be a headache (Parking in the underground garage will cost you $8-10 per visit. Sometimes the garage gets completely full & you may circle for a while before you find a spot, or you may have to park off-site. You can buy a discounted parking pass to get up to 15% off. You could also park in the surface lot across Main St from the hospital & it's cheaper, but it fills up quickly on weekday mornings and the parking spots are tiny.) * On average, I spent about 1 hour total at each visit -- they often run behind, so it's not a quick in-and-out visit. But part of this is because the midwives take the time to talk to you and address your concerns. * There are 6 midwives, so you'll get someone different at most appointments -- then when you go into labor, you'll get whoever's on call but depending who it is, you may not have seen them in months - so they could be a little unfamiliar to you. * If you need an emergency C-section, it'll likely be done by a 3rd year resident (but these are the most experienced residents who are almost done with their program and almost ready to practice independently).

After I had seen her several times and they had told me they took my insurance. I got a surprise bill from them. It wasnt too high, so I paid it and didnt ask why, I just thought it was part of my deductible or something. I made an appt some time later and when I got there, after waiting about 30 minutes the lady at the front desk called me over to tell me I had a balance. I told her that it is not possible because I had not been to the DR for several months and I paid the bill they sent me in July. She was all confused and asked me to sit. Fifteen minutes later she calls me again and explains that the problem is that Dr. Nguyen does not take my insurance, the doctor that runs the practice does. I told her I had checked with them several months before and was told she did. Then she went to ask Dr.Nguyen to see what she thought and it seems that she told her that I would have to pay as an uninsured person?? I told her NO. I have insurance and will not pay out of pocket to see her. I was not seen that day and the lady said she would call me back to let me know what they could resolve. She never called me. I called back a week later and was transferred to someone named Stephanie (who supposedly deals with insurance), left her a message and she still hasnt called me back. I am through with this office. I will just find a different gynecologist. I'm still a little pissed that they gave me wrong information but never took responsibility it. Now I'm the one that has to pay (literally) for their mistakes. Gave her two stars because although service sucked Dr. Nguyen's nurse is really sweet and kind of makes up for the Dr's lack of empathy. I really have experienced better.

Thanks to Yelp, I found Dr. Nguyen and she is a great doctor, and very personable. Went in for my annual exam and I appreciated the fact that she came in the exam room and talk to me before my exam. It was nice to chat with her for a minute about medical history, etc. I only waited about 10 minutes before the nurse called me back, which I really don't consider "waiting" since I was completing paperwork. Office staff was friendly and her nurse was great too! I'm definitely relieved to have found a new doctor in my new city.
