Where do we begin? I guess I could start by sharing that I did not have the birth experience I had planned and worked so hard for-- which made me even more thankful that Frances was on my side. We started working with Frances when I was about 4 months pregnant. I loved how personable, positive, and informative she was throughout the experience. It's funny, because in the beginning, I felt like she was great to have-- but I wasn't at the point where I felt like I NEEDED her. However, as time and pregnancy wore on, I found myself (and my husband) needing Frances more than we could have ever imagined. Frances was a GOD SEND. I was diagnosed with gestational thrombocytopenia (low platelets) early in my third trimester. My doctor and hematologist indicated that nothing could be done to boost my platelet count. Frances believed otherwise. With her help, my platelet count rose and then plateaued to levels that kept me out of the danger zone. The classes she taught leading up to my son's birth (CPR and labor) were BEYOND helpful as a first-time mom. She also taught us how to correctly install our car seat! During the birth, she was phenomenal. My husband and I relied on her heavily for pain management, and she's been an ever-present force in our lives even after the birth (coming over and checking in on the baby and I). Frances is one of the most amazing women I have ever met with the biggest heart. She truly was the best experience of my labor and delivery. She was always present, motivating, and supportive. Once we got to the hospital she was there helping me with different positions to help my labor progress, massaging me, and just providing me with comfort and ease. I never once was worried or afraid during labor and delivery because of her. Frances had another birth earlier in the day and still managed to be with me every step of the way even though I ended up having a very very long labor. I did not like the nurse that was provided at the hospital, so honestly without Frances I wouldn't have gotten the birth experience I wanted. I'm quite shy and have a hard time speaking up for myself. Frances was my advocate and voice I needed especially during such a vulnerable moment. After birth she helped baby latch and I'm still breastfeeding exclusively 3 months later. I decided to have Frances on my birth team a little late in the game but it was by far the best decision I made in my pregnancy journey! During our first phone call i immediately knew I wanted to work with her- we clicked immediately, she's extremely upbeat, positive and so encouraging! My birth plan didn't go exactly how I envisioned it (does it ever) but Frances helped me every step of the way. She talked me through my options of induction (1.5 weeks past due) and assured me that every thing would still be ok, and she joined us as the pitocin got started and stayed by my side through the entire birth I swear I don't think she even left to eat or go to the bathroom because i desperately needed her. We highly recommend Frances! We hired Frances to help with the birth of our first born with the goal of a natural, stress limited birth. My wife labored for 34.5 hours and could not have done so successfully without Frances help. There were many times when my wife wanted to consider the epidural due to labor pains, but Frances continued to gently remind us of our birth plan and reassured my wife that she was more than capable of continuing on without the epidural. Hiring Frances was one of the best decisions I made during my pregnancy, and one I never regretted (for reference, I'm a first time mom and my husband and I have no family in Houston, but we would have used Frances even if we did have family nearby). I had grand ideas of a home labor, then unmedicated birth at the hospital, but my daughters birth didn't go as planned - she came as an emergency induction three weeks early. Frances was with us in the delivery room to provide me comfort, keep me calm and collected, and give my poor swollen feet a massage on the right pressure points to hasten dilation. During labor my eyes were closed and she was right by my side translating medical lingo and giving me reassuring pep talks. My husband was relieved Frances was there to take charge because the labor room was way out of his comfort zone. I credit my overall positive birth experience to being able to lean on Frances. After my daughter was born she stayed with us in the delivery room to help me figure out breastfeeding (the nurses helped briefly, but it was so comforting to have a dedicated guide because the nurses have other patients to tend to) and checked on us several times postpartum at home. Giving birth was stressful enough, then taking home a tiny human that I was responsible for, I can't repeat enough that I felt a layer of reassurance with Frances that she was available for whatever guidance we needed throughout the whole birth and early postpartum days! It's taken me so long to write this- I want to do Frances justice. She helped the birth of our daughter, Diana, this October at UTMB in Galveston. As all the other reviews say, she was amazing. Everything I had hoped for. Some things I could speak to that I haven't seen already is the fact that ALL of the staff at the hospital had something to say about how great she was. It is a common occurrence that doulas can put care givers/ clinicians on edge. But Frances had the complete opposite effect. Everyone from techs to nurses to residents to my doc (who, upon learning I would have a doula felt the need to mention to me that he'd had to ask one to leave in the past) were raving about her. "Where did you find her? Is she taking clients? Can she come back to Galveston?" I told Frances she needed to give me some business cards! The rest will be redundant- she was perfect. We found her early on and after speaking with a few other doulas in the area, I knew Frances was it right away. She made my husband- who at first didn't think he wanted to be in the room with me at all- so comfortable (he ended up being a huge part of the big day). Once my situation got a little iffy, she was right there asking the right questions, working seamlessly with my providers. I ended up laboring for 12 hours before having to have a c-section and I wouldn't change a thing. I know there is some concern with taking the time with a doula and resulting in a c-sections, but all of the positive feelings and memories I have around my birth story are in one way or another because of Frances.
