One word.... Fantastic! This place has everything that you would want in a relaxing get away…read more They have a beautiful home that is clean and friendly. Their home is your home when you stay there. Bubba and Margie are the owners and they are dynamite people to sit an d chat with. Bubba has some great stories to tell and loves to tell them! Margie's talent is to make you feel at home with scrumptious goodies and a breakfast to die for! There are not words to describe the beautiful location that they occupy. It is a peninsula of land surrounded by a gorgeous lake and wild life. Please see the beautiful photos. I met several people that are return guests and they tell me that if you stay here, it will be very hard for other B & Bs to compare in many ways. They have many rooms in the house that are for adults only and then they have several guest houses on the property for families or groups to rent out. They have all the amenities that you would expect like boats, paddle boats and fishing poles to name a few things. This place is a nature's paradise with animals and activity where ever you look. You can nearly hand feed chipmunks at the front door if you like to that kind of thing. The way that I found this place was when my boss booked this as a off site meeting for a couple days where the management team mulled through ideas and business decisions and then have our wives stop up there on Friday evening to have a casual weekend. The charm of the people, food and location is unlike anything else you will find. Enjoy yourself and relax. I am already planning another trip back.

Mount Carmel Family Camp - Main Lodge

    Mount Carmel Family Camp

This camp is located in Alexandria. I reviewed it for that area, but wanted to share this fabulous…read morespot for all of you Twin Citians, thus the listing in St. Paul. They do have a website- adding the www and dot com thing. mountcarmelministries My family and I have been going To Mt. Carmel since my kids were barely in elementary school. Mt. Carmel is a beautiful family Bible camp on a large chunk of shoreline on Lake Carlos 4 miles north of Alexandria, Mn. A great swimming beach- diving dock, kayaks, canoes and a pontoon boat are there; kids are supervised by a lifeguard and there is a campfire ring as well as a sauna. No extra fees for using boats- or anything for that matter! We were looking for a Christian Camp with multiple programs for all ages and let me tell you, Mt. Carmel has something for everyone. There are Worship services in the morning and evening, Bible discussion groups, activites for the kids including crafts, games, movies- you name it. There is a gorgeous brand new Chapel overlooking Lake Carlos, and a beautiful lodge- plus 30 cabins and cottages. Mt. Carmel is one of the hidden gems in Minnesota that begs to be discovered. You can go there, be at peace, let your kids do their own thing and not have to worry about their safety or what they are doing. Their counselors are college students with a strong commitment to Faith and genuinely love teaching and being with children. This place is so wonderful- you can literally do all of the programs or do none of them. There is no pressure to participate, but you'll want to. Many of the guests have been going for generations, and there are just as many new guests who are discovering this sanctuary from the pressures of the world. The accomodations range from cottages, rustic cabins, remodled cabins, brand new cabins, RV sites and luxurious lodge rooms. A family of four can spend a week there for well under $1700, and that's with a top-tiered lodge room WITH FOOD! Cabins and cottages are less expensive and have a wonderful charm of a forgotten Minnesota. The food plans here are variable- you can go no food, some meals or full plan, which is what we do- breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks. There are a few special nights like a Hoedown or an ethnic buffet.' The food here is spectacular. Entrees range from grilled ribs and chicken to homemade lasagna to pizza to tatortot hotdish! Every lunch and dinner had homemade bread or rolls. Theres also a healthy salad bar and special diet considerations are available. My kids are a bit picky and they ate everything. They now have free WiFi too. Please treat yourself or your family to a week or weekend at Mt. Carmel- they are now open year-round for vacations, retreats and even business meetings. We have made many friends there and are so grateful we "took a chance". We usually do the same things- same restaurants, etc. This is now our most anticipated destination of our year! There is one bad thing about Mt. Carmel- my kids cry when we leave. That's quickly extinguished by the Dairy Queen in Alexandria on the way home.

The Barn At Dunvilla - Head table

I wanted to rewrite our review of The Barn at Dunvilla to give a more complete picture of our…read moreexperience. I deleted my previous review on my own accord because it only focused on the issues, which wasn't entirely fair. First, our wedding day was truly magical and beautiful. The location itself is stunning, and our photos turned out absolutely wonderful. The bridal suite is spacious and well-designed -- it was a great space to get ready in and spend time with my bridal party. The venue host did an excellent job. Anything we needed, he handled quickly and professionally. Several of our guests even commented on how smoothly things went. The venue also provides a chair ramp for handicapped guests, which was appreciated by those who needed it. One of the biggest positives is the flexibility -- the venue allows you to customize your day and make it your own. They also let us have our rehearsal there at no additional cost and allowed us to set up early, which made the entire weekend much less stressful. The venue is reasonably priced for everything it offers, and we appreciated being able to use their décor, which saved both time and money. The owner is pleasant to work with in person. That said, communication during the planning process could have been better. After we paid our deposit to reserve the venue, we had to reach out multiple times over the course of several weeks to get responses to some basic questions. Our DJ also had questions about the sound system and tried reaching out multiple times without hearing back. I asked a couple of times for the venue to contact our DJ directly, and they did so the last time I reached out. When you're planning one of the biggest days of your life, it can be stressful not to hear back in a timely manner. Another area that could be improved was the alcohol setup. The venue is affiliated with Spanky's, which is the only bar service allowed. We were a bit disappointed by that restriction, as we might have chosen a more affordable option otherwise. We pre-ordered through Spanky's knowing our families would be big drinkers, and the required gratuity was over $500 before any services were provided. We would have preferred the opportunity to tip based on service. The day before our wedding, the venue owner mentioned that we should move our honeymoon fund jar so it didn't "compete" with the bar's tip jars. We weren't aware that tip jars would be out for the liquor items, as we felt what we tipped was already generous. The day of the wedding, the tip jar also wasn't labeled to indicate what had already been pre-tipped. Had we known, we could have made a sign explaining what was already tipped. On our wedding day, the bar staff ended up moving our honeymoon fund jar off the bar, and unfortunately, we didn't receive any contributions to it. Afterward, I reached out to Spanky's directly, and the owner was very understanding and made things right. He also said he would look into solutions to prevent this from happening to other couples in the future, which we truly appreciated. Overall, The Barn at Dunvilla is a beautiful and accommodating place to celebrate a wedding. While there were a few communication and coordination issues along the way, our day itself was everything we hoped it would be, and we're grateful for the memories made there. They did apologize for the communication issues after the wedding, which we appreciate.
