For the kids -with endless energy- there are both planned activities and ready access to all sorts of things to prevent boredom. All sorts of water toys and playmates and a variety of land games too. For the adults, it's a genuine place to unwind. Ample opportunities to share in the adventure, as a family or on your own. From planned things (closest to the pin, waterslide) to spontaneous (grab a kayak and explore the lake). Or take your favorite book and rotate between your porch, the deck, and the lawn. The cabins are simple and relaxing, and it's nice to fall asleep in the afternoon to gentle waves. Even the wifi has been upgraded in the past few years for those pesky moments when you need it. Meals are held in a dining hall with servers. The food's not amazing but usually fits the bill after a day in the sun. Timing is never strict. What this place is not: a luxury resort with catering staff. If you're expecting St Regis of the Woods, reset. The amenities are from a bygone era, the staff is exceptionally polite but aren't here to run drink orders, and the grounds are simple but not overdone. You won't find TVs or a high-class cafe, nor room service and gourmet cuisine. You will find time to actually take a break and recharge. Honestly, it's hard to think of how Fair Hills could improve. Sure, the cabins could use some updating (though I suspect a massive capital cost). And it'd be nice for places a bit nicer for adults to congregate, maybe stocked with some beer (most common spaces are kid-friendly, and so not too comfortable). But the easiest thing would probably be an upgrade to the coffee, which for a San Francisco snob always leaves me hanging.

Their range of activities kept us busy for three days, including all kinds of water sports (kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, paddle boating, sailing, fishing), bikes (for a fee), golfing, golf carts (for a fee), bonfires, pool/hottub, deck over the lake and deliciousssss breakfast. The wedding, of course, was gorgeous. The resort was perfect for the ceremony, cocktails, dinner, and dancing. The food for all of the above was consistently yummy. They basically put the entire place at the disposal of the wedding party, and it was so. much. fun. I rave, but I mean every word. One note - it is very family friendly/laid back, so give them a little while to wander in and help you if you're checking in late. When we arrived, they were practicing singing in the ballroom (oh yeah, many of the employees are from Europe, so they sing to practice their English). And, you may have to drive around for awhile to find the main lodge, as there are no signs. I can't even say how wonderful it was. Perfect weekend there.

I especially love that breakfast was delivered and we got to eat it on the original benches in the train car. This was a truly spectacular experience. I highly recommend it! The only piece of feedback I have is that the website should make it much more clear that the train whistles can be heard at all hours of the night. We're pretty deep sleepers and only woke up once, but they are LOUD and honestly, if you're a light sleeper, this is not the place for you. That being said, I looked into reviews ahead of time and knew to prepare for this, but the owners should do this as well.

She accommodated our requests before we arrived and was responsive during our stay. Our group of 30 middle-aged adults rented a giant, brand new, beautiful log-cabin-style three-level connecting duplex tucked back into the woods just a short walk from the beach. It's not on the website (as of this review). Entrance from the parking area includes a concrete patio with chairs surrounded by grass and a nearby fire pit with bench seating. An entryway on each side of the duplex has a full-size fridge/freezer, counter, and storage. Off of each entry: One bedroom with a queen and another bedroom with two queens (Holly also added a single bed in the queen/queen per our request), a full bathroom, and a utility room with plenty of blankets and towels. Going up the stairs, each side has a living/dining space with a large TV, a fully-equipped kitchen (with dishwasher) and bar seating, two bedrooms with queen beds, a full bathroom, and a washer/dryer. The kitchens connect with a door between them and each kitchen has a sliding glass door leading to a wrap-around porch with nice charcoal grills, lounge chairs, pub tables/stools, and patio dining. A hammock hangs in the big Minnesota trees. It's lovely! Open to below, each side has an open loft on the third floor with full-size and single beds (per our request) that wasn't ideal for sleeping in our group since you can hear any noise from the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, doors, etc. but the lofts are spacious and comfortable with ceiling fans (and the whole house has A/C). A short walk to the swimming beach with a volleyball net and swimming platform, this resort has the perfect location because the loungers have a view of the sunset across the water and the beach always has sun rather than being shaded from the trees (like the resort across the lake). Our house rental included canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats. For an additional fee, we had access to paddle boards and reserved a pontoon from sunrise to sunset. The water was clear and clean and surprisingly quiet over the July 4th holiday weekend. Next time I would inquire about hiring a local house cleaner since part of our rental agreement was that we would clean the house when we left. It was OK because we all pitched in, but it would have preferred to hire someone. In general, I loved the vibe and didn't want to leave.
