Ok ok so i finally joined that gym ive been going on about. So now that im in a position to review the gym first hand here goes.
First of all a bit of a description and history on this place. The building is one of those forgotten landmarks that fade in to obscurity due to their isolated locations away from great metropolitan centres. This has been on my local high street since i was knee high to a grass hopper. I learnt to swim here and attended classes with my primary school!
The complex has an indoor 25 meter pool and a teaching pool, a brand new spa (sauna, two steam baths, Jacuzzi, treatment rooms) which i have to say is impressive for a Council Leisure Centre, additionally the gym has been overhauled. There is an outdoor lido which is hardly ever open. the indoor pool has a deep end and diving boards that extend to three giddying levels (iv never jumped of the top, cos as a child i saw my dad do it extremely poorly LOL).
Now 20 years later i have returned to use their newly refurbished gym. Ive read that the reason for the overhaul was due to a main boiler running out of steam! over the years and the refurbish was the cheaper option - Well Redbridge Council nice to see that Accountants are making decisions that directly impact the health and well being of the community! why did i bother voting!!!??
Ok where was i, ok so after the desperately needed refurb, the gym is spread over two floors overlooking the pool area the cardio equipment seems high tech, a brand ive never seen in any other gym. The resistance gear actually looks like it was dragged up from the old gym and put into the new or its just second hand, whatever, it spoils the look and feel of a brand new gym, but nonetheless does the job satisfactoraly, just. The free weights area is reasonable, certainly not a pumping iron type but good if you want to stay in shape.
The staff, oh yes this is the interesting bit. The gym staff i have met so far are very pleasant and make you feel very welcome indeed, you can tell they are a happy bunch and that in turn i feel creates a pleasant atmosphere. When i walk in i like being able say hello using their first names. The pool staff from what ive seen also make an equally good effort. However and i think the biggest downfall of the Centre run for the Council by Vision - Redbridge Culture and Leisure is the look (like i dont wanna be here type a look) and quite frankly the unwilling customer service skills of the front desk staff include i might to this the managers who sit and supervise there. I know you guys see a thousand people a day but come on Vision you've created robotic, emotionless indifferent entities the front desk needs to be your forte! for which reason this is not a going to be a five star review for me. However i intend to be going on a regular basis, so watch this space. read more
