So I'm goose hunting in the middle of winter on the Langford River in Maryland. A nice bird tolls…read moreinto the decoy spread, I rise up to shoot but I don't get the shot I want. It flies up and turns away before falling in the middle of the river. Score one bird for dinner. Problem is the river is deep and wide, and covered in a layer of thin ice. It's been a long few days of hunting and I'm tired, but I have to retrieve my bird. The only way is using a sit-upon kayak. Note this is winter, not summer; I'm wearing full winter gear just to stay warm in the frigid river air. I strip off my parka, jump on the kayak and head out. I'm straining to get the boat through the ice. With each stroke the bow rides up on the ice then breaks through. Exhausting work in heavy clothes, I'm sweating like crazy. My position in the kayak is completely uncomfortable, shotgun across my lap, hunched over. Mind you, if I capsize, my big winter boots will drag me down to my death. Almost to the bird, something pops in my hip, like a knife jammed into my right butt cheek. I barely make it to the bird and back to the dock thinking I've hurt my back somehow. Crawling to the blind, I sit dazed wondering what the hell is strained. The pain is excruciating. Finally I can't stand it any longer. I somehow get back to the house about 50 yards away and pop 8 Advil. After five minutes tick by, I impatiently down a glass of scotch waiting for the meds to kick in. Crippled, I get to my bed and lay there unable to move without crying. Mind you, I'm not unfamiliar with pain, and I have the scars to prove it. I've had my appendix out, hand cut to the bone, arm almost ripped off, knee split open, broken bones, you name it. But this has me whipped. Lots more booze that night gets me to the morning, but when I wake up, I'm just as bad. I crawl to my car and drive home. The next day at work, I'm no better, can barely move, stiff and pained. One of my employees suggests a chiropractor. Yeah, yeah, I've been to them before. Years ago when I was a younger man I had a lot of back pain. I saw many chiropractors. One was so "spiritual" that I couldn't tell if he was actually doing anything at the sessions. One time he actually falls asleep and bumped his head on mine. My mother says he was channeling positive energy but I call bullshit. Another guy twists my body and says "ready?" before cracking me like a walnut. I hated him more than sleepy. My employee says, Dr. Wendi isn't like that, so I relent and call. She makes time for me that day. After some evaluation, the doctor determines I've severely strained my sacroiliac joint, that's the one that holds your spine to your pelvis. You need that to do things like walk, sit, lie down, and anything else that requires movement. On the table, she adjusts me with mild pressure, no cracking, no twisting, Dr. Wendi doesn't believe in that. Like a disciple at a faith healing road show, I literally get up off the table and walk up and down the hall with a nearly normal gait. It was biblical. The pain comes back a bit the next day as she predicted but less each time I visit and a handful more sessions later I'm recovered. Dr. Wendi is my hero. I still go to see her from time to time. No more major pain now but like most people I'm a little crooked from years of not taking the easy route. She pushes me back in alignment and I walk out straighter and taller every time. She's holistic but not goofy, assertive but not a back cracker, the way chiropractors should be. Highly recommended.
