Take a ride from Como to Brunate. Brunate is a small village at the top of the mountain. It has spectacular views of Como down below. There are a couple of cafes and some souvenir stands. Not up for a major hike high up the mountains overlooking Como? Funicolare is the answer! However, it doesn't take you all the way to El Faro and the Three Crosses. To get there, you'll need to hike a series of steep roads, steps and trails. The funicular is a fun activity to try and it takes you up to a cool spot for a few hours of exploration. Funicolare is fun! Some hike or bike to the Brunate top, but chillaxing on the train is easier on the legs. A steep incline of 55%, the views are spectacular during the 7 minute ride. Can get a bit stuffy waiting in line inside the station and the bathrooms are very crowded at the wrong moment. Train rides every 30 minutes. Spectacular atmospheric views since 1894. read more

This should be on the must do list when visiting Como. It's a unique experience, that we greatly enjoyed. It only takes a few minutes to travel up to Brunate, and the funicular offers great views along the way. Brunate is beautiful town with great views and Volta's Lighthouse at the top of the town, a somewhat arduous 30 plus minute uphill hike. The funicular, which connects Como to the lofty Brunate, made its first journey in 1894. Today, it continues to run every 30 minutes with a journey that lasts only seven minutes. The track has the maximum gradient allowed at 55%. The village of Brunate is approximately 2,300 feet (700 meters) above sea level. It's a beautiful little town, with lovely villas in an Art Nouveau style. Brunate offers great hiking and beautiful views of the Alps. The funicular is a fun way to travel, offering great views, especially on the way down. Get the last car on the way up and the first car on the way down for some optimum views (check out the photos). Take it early week days to avoid the crowds! read more

This Funicular connects two cities. Como and Brunate is connected with great transportation since 1894. The service was great with both cities with Brunate is on the hillside. It is convenient and the round trip cost is great with both cities. The funicular provide a view and ride to the top. I like it because it has the seat for the elderly and space for the handicap. The total ride is 8 minutes. The wait at the station is 15 minutes per schedule. So time your time if you need to get back to Como. Bottom city Como has a lot to offer due to lake activity with big house and castle. The Brunate provide a view to the lake. It has the light house and other item you can visit. You can join the shuttle to the light house and all other attraction. The view on top is spectacular. read more

Do you know what a line is? Do you know what personal space is? Am I invisible? Are you invisible? I asked all of these questions and more to some specific people while enjoying the funicular headed to and from the peaks of Brunate with great views of Como. Answer? No, no, yes, definitely not. A roundtrip ticket is €5,50/pp, which is well worth it considering the alternative way to go up. Our first night here we drove up the mountain in our rental car, and as much as love a challenging drive, doing it at midnight in the rain was probably not the most relaxing idea. This is undoubtedly a much more relaxing and speedier way to enjoy the view. It leaves every 15 minutes, and from what we observed, it seemed to run no matter how much it decided to rain outside. On the way up, there's not much of a view from the sides, so you can really sit anywhere. The ideal car would be the last one (closest to the bottom.) The view from the very back was probably the most unobstructed. On the way down, the front car is where it's at, which everyone else seemed to figure out as well. We were second in line, and were excited to grab the very front for the great view going down... ...That was until captain ridiculous and her objectively stronger-than-she-looked daughter decided to push us out of the way as soon as the doors opened so they could grab the front. After some New York style eye rolling, we decided to just let it go. Good thing they spent 7 minutes checking e-mail, deleting text messages, and taking awful photos and videos on their disposable Samsung smartphones. Way to go, friends. The ride 100% worth the trip, and the view up top is where it's really at, so focus more on that instead of your seat on the funicular itself. But hey, it wouldn't hurt to try and grab the best seat in the house. read more

Get your hiking shoes on and let's go all aboard! What better way to shake off arrival day jet lag then to hike up a mountain? Way better than shopping and no need to use the 40 year old gym equipment found in my hotel...at least not today. Five euro/person will buy you a round trip ticket up and down the funicular. While there are a number of things to see in Brunate including villas built into hillsides, a waterfall, and a few churches - the main attraction is a lighthouse and tallest standing point of the mountain. There are two ways to the lighthouse and both are due *up*. One way is to take the bus departing just outside the funicular. The second is to hoof it, which we did; I in wedges and honey in sneaks. It's about 2 kilometers, so a hare over a mile, and it will take you every last minute (and then some) that the signs indicate - about 35 minutes. Not sure if we're idots for following the signs as they lead on a rocky path sans switchbacks. The actual road, paved with ease, seems like your best bet albeit longer with the winding up the mountainside. Then 142 more steps to the top of the lighthouse and task done. read more

On our visit to Italy, we decided to go to Lake Como and then do Milan the next day. In Como there's a small area for shopping and such, but what we heard about was the funicolare! It's super cute. A little train that goes up the side of a mountain to Brunate. For a round trip cost of 5.10 Euros it's well worth it for the experience. It unfortunately so windy and cold the day we went so when we got to Brunate, it was just unbearable. The tram runs every 30 min so you can wait up to 29 min if you JUST missed the run, which was in our case both times. Either way, the views from the top at Brunate was beautiful. It was almost sun set so we got gorgeous photos. Get good walking shoes if you want to explore Brunate more than we did. read more

This is the funicular that takes you up to the charming and quaint Brunate. It costs 5 euros each way and leaves every 30 minutes. My travel buddy told me there was a specific cafe she wanted us to go to once we arrived, but we discovered it was closed. Still, we were so glad to have made the trek up because the views of the lake were beautiful. Take a walk around the village, check out the church, and do a little perusing through the items for sale in the shops. read more

Sit in the front of the car (lowest level) for the best views of the lake and town of Como. If you are going for the views I would recommend going on a clear day! However, if you are going to explore Brunate I would recommend wearing a decent pair of shoes, as you will need to be doing a bit of walking. The ride itself is around 10 minutes or less. I saw an even mix of both tourists and residents riding the funicular while I was there. €5.30 for a round trip ticket - leaves every half hour from 6am-10:30pm, although the hours may be a little longer on Saturdays. The schedule is posted right on the ticket office window. Man at the office does speak a little English but I would recommend at least knowing a few phrases in Italian (ie: "andata e ritorno" = "round trip"). read more

If you can only do one thing in Como, take this cable car. You get such an amazing view of the lake during the ride and at the top that it's totally worth it. The cable car is diagonal. If you want the best view, STAND at the bottom part. If you sit, someone could stand in front and block your view. The worst place you can site is the right side (facing forward while sitting in the seats). You see nothing from that view. I also recommend going about 5 minutes before the car leaves, so you won't make it for the immediately leaving car but will get first pick for the car leaving after that. The cable car is pretty empty around noon going down. read more

We got bored of Milan after a day so we took a train out to Como, which turned out to be a wonderful idea. Funicolare Como-Brunate was our favorite thing to do in Como. For about 5 EUR, the funiculare takes you up and back down the mountain to/from Brunate, a cute small village. The views up there were spectacular. Once at the top we decided to walk to the lighthouse & 'waterfall'; both were disappointing but the views along the way were incredible so that made it worth it. The hike to either one of these attractions are pretty steep so make sure you have on comfortable shoes. read more

While at Lake Como, we took the funiculare up the mountain - reasonable at about 5Euro each for the round trip. The views just keep getting better as the railway car rises. Once in Brunate, we walked all around the village, had lunch and a glass of wine at the cafe right near the station. The tiny church in Brunate was so beautiful - the workmanship was incredible. We spent several hours relaxing here, enjoying the afternoon breezes and the laid-back atmosphere. Definitely a must see when in Lake Como. read more

This inclined railway (funicular) takes you from the Lakefront Como to Brunate (which is a complete village at the top of the low-lying mountain) in just a few minutes for only 6E! What a bargain...we should have spent more time in Brunate, checking out the shops and restaurants, but a fantastic view, even though it was a bit hazy the afternoon we were there! read more

The funiculare provided wonderful views of the lake and the surrounding areas. There's a hiking path visible from the funiculare that looked like it might be an enjoyable adventure (going down, not up though). Once ontop the mountain, strolling around the quaint Brunate was an absolute joy. If your aspirations are to go to the higher parts of the town, it might be useful to wear sneakers as my boots disagreed with my decision to hike up the steep inclines. read more

5.50 Euros for a round trip where people are crammed in? The experience is traumatizing as the smell of 30+ people's sweat starts building up and you can't breath. The line is ridiculous and the ride itself isn't that spectacular anyways; you can barely see the view. The only reason to take it would be to easily access the summit and look down upon Como. read more
