Ignorance is no excuse for cruelty
I'm writing this in desperation for the sake of a bird that can't speak for itself verbally but can only demonstrate its plight through self-harm.
If you have an animal, it is your solemn duty to find out everything you can about that animal so that you can provide the best possible environment for that animal. If this is beyond your means, then you must make the selfless decision, that for the sake of that animal, you will not have it. They are not ornaments or shop dummies.
Fur and Purr have had an African Grey Parrot, that's been in a dreadful state, in their shop, for at least 10 months. You should see the sad excuses they keep giving for their obviously stressed and probably malnourished show-piece. Perhaps if they could stock a decent complete food and feed it to the bird in a cake form (recipe provided on request), their parrot would be a lot better off, nutritionally. Saying that, it's also never out of it's cage and it has to live in the shop all the time, even when the owners go home. No wonder it's stressed. Isolation is a death sentence in nature.
When questioned about the bird's welfare, the owners just get defensive and close ranks. If only they were more open to some constructive advice, this review wouldn't have been necessary.
I've only known of the bird 10 months, but if they were seriously trying to improve that bird's lot, there should have been some changes by now. They say they've bought it a day light, but it's still not there.
If this is how they look after their show-piece, how do they look after the feed they sell? Perhaps they haven't researched that either.
These people shouldn't be allowed near animals, never mind advising about their feeding and welfare.
Shame on them. read more
