TL;DR: OMG this is such good Italian food, I'm so sad I won't find this in America EVER again. Don't let the "chain" status fool you, they produce quality food that I would gladly pay for over and over again. If you're there when prawns are offered, order the Gamberi Et Parpadelle, heavenly!
First of all, I did NOT know this was a chain restaurant. Although there wasn't really any indication that it would be. When I think chain I think of KFC, Applebees, TGIFs, you know, the obvious ones. This particular restaurant was situated in one of the more heavily foot traffic areas of Canal St Martin.
I was first drawn in by how much "space" they had. I put "space" in quotations because if you are more than six inches apart from your neighbor, in Paris, that's a lot of space in these dine-in cafes. At this point in our travel through Europe, my broken high school French had endured many blank stares and confusion, what's another disappointment? I ordered in French and our water just smiled. "I speak English" she politely said. I was relieved. Our entire table ordered and we were ready to ride the culinary high we were currently on.
"I'd like the Beef Tartare for starters and for the main course Gamberi et Parpadelle". The menu seems seasonal because when I try to find the ingredients of this dish offered at this location, there's none. Which is a good problem to have, it just means that fresh seasonal ingredients are only being used.
The Beef Tartare. For the amateur this is basically raw ground beef tossed in herbs and spices with a mixed green salad on the side and hot potato wedges. I know, it sounds scary, even for an adventurous person like me I was hesitant. That hesitancy grew even more apparent when the dish arrived at our table. I thought it would be a quaint little mound of raw spiced meat, nope it was a mound, like the size of my fist that swelled up after a bee sting huge. Luckily I was sharing. I closed my eyes and thought, this is just like eating sushi, I'll be fine. I took the first bite. I chewed cautiously, then as the flavors began to mix it was absolutely delectable! There's no raw meat after taste if that's what you're worried about. Take a spoonful of the tartare, fork some salad, and eat a hot potato wedge. It's delicious, and a taste unlike I've ever experienced. 100% will order again if given the chance.
The Gamberi et Parpadelle dish. First of all, FULL jumbo prawns that were clearly marinated and steeped in the sauce. It was a white sauce that was clearly infused with seafood stock because the seasoning and flavors were just absolutely mind-blowing. Fresh grilled zucchinis, wilted and perfectly sauteed mushrooms, grilled eggplant, and dotted with parsley overwhelms your senses. Then. My goodness that perfectly cooked pasta. I HAD NEVER KNOWN WHAT PERFECTLY COOKED PASTA TASTED LIKE. And I'm mad. Even in the more expensive restaurants in the states, my pasta is dry, sticky, clumpy, or is drowning in sauce. No ma'am/sir, NOT here. The parpadelle perfectly separates and the right amount of sauce adheres to the pasta. Every bite is just barely past "al dente". My favorite part? THE GENEROUS servings of jumbo shrimp still in its shell. Clearly NOT frozen. I had five of them. All shrimp needs to be served this way, JUST my opinion. FIVE of them in this dish and all perfectly cooked!. Perfectly plump, cooked pasta, a grilled veggie and sumptuous, juicy shrimp in one fork bite will make you wonder why you've been eating pasta wrong all your life. Well for me at least.
My palate cleanser for this delicious meal? Proseco Mojitos. You read right. Fresh, clean, citrusy, and dangerously addictive.
This is one of the more spacious restaurants in Paris, especially in the Canal St Martin area. Come with an appetite and don't let your lack of French scare you, make an attempt, then let your helpful waiter/waitress take it from there. read more
