How could becoming a living voodoo doll cure me of my ailments? After much urging from a friend to try acupuncture (since I have a condition that responds poorly to conventional treatments), I decided one time can't hurt. At her referral, I saw David Schiman. He is a very easy going person who will put all your fears at ease and answer your questions to the best of his abilities. After a brief intake during your first time there, including an extensive medical history check and some questions about what you're looking to improve, you'll be brought into the treatment room where the fun starts. Like I said, I was skeptical. What happened next completely changed my mind. Since my shoulders were very tight that day, I ended up getting two needles in the trapezius area of my shoulders. At first they spasmed badly and actually scared me for a moment, but then they relaxed. Just totally relaxed! I'm not sure how this actually worked, if a nerve was hit and that relaxed them, but it was like a miracle. I won't lie; some of the needles will hurt. Some will bleed. Some will fall out or irritate your skin. Just be prepared for it. Once all the needles are in it is somehow very calming. I like that it's forced meditation in a way - you can't move because of the needles, so you have to calm your mind in other ways than physically. After a session I always leave completely relaxed, as if I'd slept a whole night's sleep in under an hour. This practice is very clean, very well lit, and despite being a place where you get stuck full of needles it is never scary. The location itself is right on Main Street in Manayunk, and even though it's on the third floor of an office building it's still very easy to find. If you ever were interested in acupuncture but unsure if it's for you, I would definitely recommend you see David. I'm a believer now, and feel like this location is a great place to start for any beginner.

The only downside is that you never know who you'll be in the acupuncture room with. It's an open room with maybe 6-8(? I forget, it's been a while) acupuncture chairs---hence the "community" part. Most times the people you're in the room with are quiet and the experience is relaxing, and other times you could get someone who is coughing or clearing their throat the whole time or just generally noisy, which could hinder the relaxation portion of your experience. All in all, 85% of the time you get a good group.

However, once I got there, he didn't seem to know what to do with me. He asked me if I could get on my stomach... uh, no. Anyone with a single ounce of experience working with pregnant patients should know I can't get on my stomach on a regular bench. He then said, "hmmm, I'll have get creative," which was another mark that he didn't know what to do with pregnant patients! Even though my first experience was pretty much useless, I was in so much pain and desperate so I decided to give this place a second chance. However, the second time was even worse. I was first put on a heat pad for about 15 minutes while he worked on another patient, and then seen by the chiropractor for a grand total of 7 minutes while he was bopping around 2 other patients at the same time. During my 40 minutes in the office, the chiropractor saw FOUR patients total. Clearly not spending that much time with each patient. Office staff and chiropractor are friendly people, but it's clear they double/triple/quadruple book in the same time slots intentionally. Definitely not worth the $ to be seen for less than 10 minutes.

I was prescribed 400mg of ibuprofen just to battle these monsters but even with the horse pill, I was done for when the monster came knocking. Nothing seemed to calm the beast. It's been years and I kind of just gave up. I also work in an office so I would get this horrible knots behind my shoulder blades. I was just a mess. My boyfriend kept nagging me to try a chiropractor but after reading how chiropractors was a waste of money, I kept putting it off. The receptionist is always a sweet heart, I never got her name after 14 visits but she remembered me. Doctor Jeremy listened to my concerns and explained how it worked. After 2 visits, my migraines were gone, my knots were gone, I was a new woman. Compared to getting massages every week, I was saving money seeing Doctor Jeremy. They take their time listening to your issues and help you with treatment options to make life go easier. I always come back so relaxed. If you're seeing Steve, know that he is extremely knowledgeable about protocols of western medicine and he works very closely with a lot of fertility clinics in the area. It's always good to have a holistic provider in your team when you're going through the stressful time of fertility treatments.

I tend to be someone who typically goes to the doctors office when plagued by an issue, although now I find myself checking out alternative therapies more like acupuncture, chiropractic, meditation, etc. I also was a bit fearful of needles when I initially came here after a traumatic experience before a surgery, but I'm thrilled that my fear has really dissipated thanks to acupuncture! I now relax and lay back when the needles are being put in and I'm really amazed because recently I had to get a lot of blood drawn and I just relaxed, held my arm out and went to my Zen like place, which is really great! Before acupuncture, I would have been much more anxious and on edge. I not only have arthritis in my knee, which is my primary reason for coming to acupuncture but I also have chronic pain- a condition which affects the body with widespread pain and tenderness called fibromyalgia, which is a misunderstood and baffling illness. So, I'm coming to Healing Arts for both! I would much rather have a Zen like afternoon catnap where I can relax that take lots of medications. I may not be able to completely avoid the latter but whatever I can do holistically and naturally will definitely be my preference. While I may not ever be cured of these conditions completely, knowing that acupuncture can really help me manage my symptoms is invaluable! It's a great way of coping, a huge tool in my toolbox of coping strategies and I would personally much rather have acupuncture any day than get injections and have to take lots of pills. I tend to come about once a month and the first couple of times I noticed some soreness but I have found much better results as I keep going. Occasionally a little bruise or soreness may occur but the pain relief, motion and relief from stiffness in joints is really amazing and awesome! My knee feels much better after going this 3rd time, much more movement when it was pretty stiff. They also have a Yelp deal, check in offers and all in all is a relaxing experience- chill out on a massage bed with pillows, calming music, refreshing scents, dim lighting and yes, some privacy too from the Shoji screens. I have had 3 practitioners- Margaret, Holly and Steve, I thought they were all good, I prefer Steve but they were all good. I'll be back!

I accidentally came in a week early for appointment after writing it down wrong (oops!) but the staff at HACA were so kind and accommodating despite it being completely my mistake, and were able to fit me in for a great session. The place was really well set-up with rugs, heaters, and screens to separate patient treatment areas that are all within the same large room. Holly Prescott was the practitioner that day and she did a great job asking what I was there for and then placing needles so gently I hardly felt them. It's rare that I slip into the deep, almost sleep-like relaxation I felt during this treatment, but I was so completely relaxed that it came easily. Thanks for the great session Holly!
