Now I realize it should have been first on my list. Who knew petrified wood could be so beautiful and interesting? The Zuhl Collection is the largest collection of petrified wood on display in the country. In addition to petrified wood, they have fossils, minerals, and even a meteorite. Over 1,800 specimens are beautifully displayed in this small museum on the campus of the New Mexico State University. We had the place to ourselves when we arrived on a Thursday afternoon. There is much to see, so it was nice to be able to wander at our leisure. This is truly a fantastic place; don't miss it. Move it to the top of your "to see" list, and go. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed.

When we visited, they had their Day of the Dead exhibit and display. I can say, hands down, this was such an incredible display. It was informative while honoring the sacred tradition of an ofrenda, and was interactive for all. Each of the pieces of the altar and their significance were explained. The papel picado was used for people to write notes to their deceased loved ones. Next to the ofrenda was the photographic exhibit in the Shannon Room. Beautiful pictures depicting the love and care that goes into Day of the Dead. Definitely a place to stop if you are on Main Street.

When we came in, there was an exhibit on World War II, including timelines of the war, - how Germany started the war by invading Poland, how Japan invaded Manchuria, how the US began its nuclear testing program, the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S. declaration of war on Japan, the role of sites in New Mexico (including Los Alamos and Alamogordo) for developing and testing the first atomic bomb (the Trinity Test), and other events that led to dropping US atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to lead to the surrender of Japan. The plaza is located right across from the Basilica of San Albino and is surrounded by numerous boutique shops and restaurants. Mesilla isn't very big, so you can definitely see the whole historic area in a short amount of time. The plaza is somewhat plain, but it is highlighted by a gazebo displaying the US and Mexico flags, as well as benches to sit on to take in the sights. While the plaza isn't worth seeing specifically, it is one of the reasons why Mesilla is worth visiting.

The insalata paolo was half the size it normally had been. It's supposed to be a salad for 2, tonight it was a salad for 1. The salmon pasta was plain, the salmon was raw, and seemed to be deep fried. We sent it back, and after a long wait we got another piece of oily deep fried salmon that was raw on the inside. The focaccia bread served with the pasta was rock hard and stale. We gave up and checked out. The server seemed busy and rushed, but was nice enough to take the salmon off the bill.

I've never thought some of the most impressive murals I've ever seen would be displayed on water tanks until I arrived here. He's done a few (that I know of so far) and it's been recently announced that he'll be working on a new mural at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum's Main Gallery with Las Cruces' own NMSU students. I can't wait to see it! I can't put into words what these murals look like...just view the pics and you'll see. Of course, they're even better in person!

Please do pay attention to this fact. I find it amazing that at the last repainting, they still somehow failed to paint in the missing rear legs of these animals. HILARIOUS.
