Sombra Antigua is where you wanna go to have a fun time. No judgments here, just a relaxing good time. While visiting New Mexico, I decided to check out the wine tasting scene. Admittedly, my expectations for wineries outside of my home state of California are generally quite low. Not because I don't think that there is better wine out there, but simply because I don't want to quickly compare everything to what I already know. Coming here, I knew it wouldn't be anything like the wineries back home. But that's honestly what I enjoyed most about Sombra Antigua. I stopped by solo without a reservation, and literally left with newly made friends that I hung out with for the rest of the night and even the next day. I mean, the people are so friendly, welcoming, and trustworthy here. There was live music and I sat and watched. 15 minutes later I was actually up and DANCING with a group of people. Shayla dancing with unknowns?! At MY big age? In this new era?! It's a rarity, I tell you! But, I did it. And it was SOOO much fun. Not to mention, the wine was actually pretty damn tasty. Yep, I said it! It was tasty. I enjoyed their Viognier, Demi sec, Barbera, and sweet cider beer. Is it the best wine that I've ever had in my life?! No, not at all. But, it's still good for the occasion and extremely affordable. They've got a large list of both wine and beer, and it's $5 for 5 tastes. BRING THOSE PRICES BACK TO NAPA!!! I know, I know... it ain't gonna happen. But, at least it's still thriving out here. The family who own and operate this winery is wonderful. They were right there dancing and drinking with everyone else. I love the family feel here. This is a winery where everyone know one another. And if they don't know someone, they're gonna get to know you and embrace you. I instantly felt embraced. What a warm and fun little gem this place is! If I'm ever back in this area again, a visit to Sombra Antigua will be first on my to-do list!

I've never thought some of the most impressive murals I've ever seen would be displayed on water tanks until I arrived here. He's done a few (that I know of so far) and it's been recently announced that he'll be working on a new mural at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum's Main Gallery with Las Cruces' own NMSU students. It only takes about 30 minutes to slowly wander around, so not a huge time commitment to visit. They have a unique exhibit of a trackway from the Permian period. Nice open space for events in Cruces…read more It is nice open area with tapestries in the center. It even has a sun dial in the center. I practically missed it because it was impressed by the design in and of itself. The place is already set up for Christmas, but I wasn't sure if they had done a Christmas tree lighting yet. In the daytime, with the blue sky above, the tree looked beautiful though. I like that there is plenty of seating around the plaza, both covered and uncovered. The plaza is within walking distance of several eateries, casual and fine dining, and the historic Rio Grande Theater. I would like to return for the seasonal special events for sure.

They have so many shops including this heavily recommended bookstore that my husband likes called Coas Bookstore. They say once you enter in that bookstore, it's hard to walk out and you will get lost. It's like a maze! The Plaza is very clean with decent parking and has excellent food and even the public is friendly and approachable. The tiles of the sidewalks are detailed and every shop is decorated for the holidays.

Who wants to do a marathon, half marathon, or shorter distance that's free of crowds and…read morecongestion, good fun and meet new friends, and have the time of your life? There's a catch and it's not for everyone. Multiple loops on the same stretch of road, many times in a state or city park. That's when I thought that's not going to happen when I heard of the concept of Mainly Marathons, a small race company that puts on a series or marathons for those people, myself included, that loves to travel and pick off states for marathons and to accomplish a lifetime goal of popping 50 marathons in 50 states. I managed to stay away from Mainly marathons for my 1st turn, but found myself registered and had ultimately have run a Mainly marathon event in October 2016. I did it just to check out the scene and see what it was all about. This was my return trip to New Mexico to participate in the 2016 Mainly marathons - Day of the Dead series. This was my 91st marathon/ultra and 11th state marathon in the 2nd tour. The Day of the Dead marathon series spanned two days back to back. I chose to run just one of the days for the state of New Mexico, just because 2 days straight would be crazy, especially when it got warm after 9:00am. The overall experience for the Day of the Dead marathon was interesting. A small road race that had less than 150 people for both the marathon and half marathon distances. I disliked running multiple loops on the same course, but what can you do really since you're there and needing to add to your goals? It's really one of those things where you're a bit of a crazy person who travels and runs marathons or half marathons for fun, basically. That's me pretty much. The overall experience here at the Mainly marathons here in Las Cruces, NM was a unique and interesting experience. It was 12 loops of 2.something miles a piece of out and back stretches of a city park to make a marathon of 26.2 miles. It was 6 loops for the half marathon. They had us keep track of our laps by wearing rubber bands. I kept mine on my arm, since it kept me from going nuts as far as how much laps I needed to go for the coveted marathon distance finish. They have one main aid station at the start and finish line, since it was just a 2 mile something course. There was aid at the turn around, since it was rather warm towards noon and everyone else who was out there still needed expanded aid. There was limited, but plentiful parking here at the park and I'm thankful that I got directions from the Days Inn computer via google maps. They had a police unit out by the entrance directing people in. When I drove by, I thought initially that a crime scene was there lol They have race Morning packet pick up, which is quick and took less than 3 minutes. They look you up on a list of names and then find your individual bib in the bin. Nothing to it really, saves a lot of money by not having a race expo. The fun and company you have here can't be measured, but the miles and smiles are sure to be plenty. It was a cool morning, temperature wise, but warmed up to 80 degrees by 10:30am. Plenty of people, the very fast and the fast, pass by you on each lap. While that may be discouraging, you know in your heart that you are participating and putting in an honest day's effort and completing the required distance for your race. That's how it was for me, trying the best effort I knew that day, but in the end, the travel, the eating, and the 2 marathons before New Mexico (Maine at Mount Desert Island marathon and Michigan at Grand Rapids marathon) had gotten to me, but that final push to the finish line made it all the more worth the travel expense and reminded me why I still do this thing. Far from the maddening crowds and cheer zones, this race within the umbrella of the Mainly marathon series is a nice one, if you like loops and on the same course its run on. While it's not for everyone, it serves its purpose of having fun and picking up marathons that can be low cost when you sign up early. The buffet spread at the aid station was quite substantial. I had a few breakfast quesadillas during the early miles (4-6) along with Diet Coke and water in the later middle miles (15-18). 5.0 stars for the organization and race direction. Even the race director runs this marathon too. 4.0 stars for the food spread. 3.5 stars for the finisher medal. 2.0 stars for the loop course. Not a fan, but I got my 2nd marathon in New Mexico.
