I've always loved driving around this area; the views of the reservoir are just picturesque. The…read morebest time to go is during the autumn when the leaves turn. The Scituate Reservoir is the largest lake in Rhode Island; and largest inland body of water. Over 60% of the RI population drinks the water from this reservoir. In the early 1900's, many people were forced to leave their homes in order to have the dam built and create the reservoir. There is no trespassing on the property which is owned by the Providence Water Supply; recreation is prohibited for obvious reasons. Driving on the causeway is the best way to enjoy it; even if it's just a quick glimpse. We used to be able to park on street and walk to the causeway back in the day; I don't think that is allowed anymore.

Rolling Rock is one of those oddball type attractions, like the 'world's biggest ball of yarn', or…read more'world's biggest thermometer' that you don't necessarily seek out but if you have the opportunity to check it out you do so. And so brings to me Rolling Rock. Apparently, a local landmark, Rolling Rock, is in a neighborhood and dates to glacier times if you believe the local lore. And for a while, it also apparently did rock back and forth before being permanently anchored. Is it something to make a special trip over? No. But having been to Battleship Cove in the morning and being relatively close by, it was worth it for me. So while I wouldn't seek it out, it's definitely one of those oddities that is fun to explore.

There was a cute mini trail behind the Mill house which was short but enjoyable. Left thinking well that was not what I expected, the photo showed water. I have revisited the map and see where had I continued down the road, I would have found the waterfall. I will go again, but meanwhile it was pretty.

After several years of walking thru the property of Hunt's Mill of East Providence, I finally took…read morea tour of the museum. Today I decided to drive to Hunt's Millaround 1:30. I noticed someone in Revolutionary War attire. The Museum was open and I was ready to explore. Everyone should take this tour. The staff is pleasant and knows the history. Books on sale and it is a great way to spend a few hours.

This old swing bridge goes over the Providence River and opened in 1927; replacing an old bridge…read morethat was built in 1872. It is on Point Street, hence the name. This bridge connects two neighborhoods Wickenden Street and the Jewelry District. The last time it moved was in 1959, because it's a swing bridge, however, it is now fixed in place; there is no use for it now since large boats cannot come through due to the hurricane barrier. There are sidewalks and it's a great view of the river when walking across it. I gave it three stars because it needs a new paint job, it had lots of graffiti on it. Overall, it plays an important role with connecting neighborhoods and a popular road well traveled by the Rhode Islanders.

The Point Street Bridge is a movable bridge that crosses the Providence River in Providence,…read morecarrying Point Street from the Jewelry District to Wickenden Street at the base of College Hill. For many years, it was the only bridge connecting those two sections of the city until the Pedestrian Bridge opened in 2019. Still if you are driving, this is the most convenient link for motorists. The bridge used to be a swing bridge for many years, but no more. The bridge no longer opens for boats. The bridge has no opened for boats since 1959. The Fox Point Hurricane Barrier constructed in 1966 ensured that this river would never again be navigable for significant boat traffic. An earlier swing bridge at this location was an iron bowstring span dating to 1872. Today, lots of graffiti cover the metal beams and supports, but still, it is a pretty sight, especially at dawn and at night, when it is lit.

A beautiful bridge between Newport RI & Jamestown, RI. Since childhood, it has reminded me of "The…read moregates in Emerald City". Gorgeous picturesque view while crossing as well as down on lower levers looking at it in the distance. If you are a RI resident and have EZ Pass, the fee is not bad, but for non residents, it will cost $4 each way.

OK, so I'm a cottonheadedninnymuggins. We love covered bridges. We've visited them in NH, VT, IA…read moreand more, and it actually never occurred to us to look in RI for any! Luckily, taking an 'avoid highways' trip we passed the sign in Foster pointing the way to this bridge and since then we have found out there are several, easily accessible, covered bridges in state. Although none of them are the original structures, they are still works of craftmanship and remind of times past. This bridge is just out of sight of the main road. At the time of our visit the roads had been stripped down to dirt and there seemed to be some excavating work going on. Not sure how long it's been like that or how long it will last, but it did not look like a 'new' occurrance. It spans a small creek, at when we visited in the summer it was surrounded by lush greenery making any path to the water impassable. There is a home right next to the bridge and aside from lurkers like us, looks like an idyllic spot for a home. Just before the bridge there is a spot to pull off the road while you take your photos and get a closer look. The road is in use as we had a couple of vehicles pass us while we were exploring the bridge. We did not have enough to turn around an followed the GPS back to the main road we had just come off, further up the route. If you enjoy exploring covered bridges, this is a quick stop along your route and a lovely photo op.

Most of the trees surrounding the bridge no longer had any leaves. However, the drive to the covered bridge was perfect! There were a ton of beautiful trees near the water, Barden Reservoir. I suggest stopping by the water because the views are beautiful! (About ten minutes before the bridge.) Although I was a bit disappointed when I got to the bridge due to lack of fall foliage, the drive more than made up for it--very peaceful with great views.

This is a lighthouse on the lighthouse tour offered by RI Bay Cruises, although it is really only a small foundation now. The location is actually Narragansett Bay, too, not Manville.

A broken lighthouse…read more Rhode Island doesn't get a lot of hurricanes but has had some whoppers. The monsters in 1938 and 1954 changed the coastline and caused literally billions of dollars in damage. The one in 1938 even managed to break in half a nearly indestructible cast iron light called Whale Rock Light. Whale Rock is a treacherous reef that was responsible for the destruction of many ships over the years. Laying right in the middle of the west passage of Narragansett Bay it was difficult to avoid and miss in bad weather so in 1882 the authorities finally decided to mark this deadly spot with a sturdy and stout cast iron "spark plug" light. This design was popular in severe areas because it was thought to be able to withstand anything nature could throw at it. Of course people underestimated the fury of exactly what nature was capable of. The light serve well until 1938 when an unprecedented and unbelievably powerful cat 3 hurricane slammed into the bay without warning. Sustained winds of over 120 miles per hour and gusts of almost 200 miles per hour literally shook the ocean and hurled it toward the shore. They didn't give official names for hurricanes back then but the colossus of 38 has been called The Yankee Clipper, The Long Island Express, The Great Hurricane or simply The Beast. Over 600 people died in New England and probably another hundred or so in other states. A 25 feet storm surge hit in places like a giant tidal wave and parts of Providence were under 35 feet of water. Millions of trees were destroyed and thousands of houses and buildings were laid waste. The destruction was sudden, complete and unimaginable. The intrepid and faithful lighthouse keeper was the 40 year old Walter Eberle, a father of 6 who was no stranger to the sea. He was off duty but knew a big one was brewing and bravely went out to the lighthouse to relieve his less experienced assistant who went back to shore. Walter stayed at his duty at the light as the waves and winds grew. He probably had to go up to the top of the structure but might have believed that nothing could actually destroy this lighthouse. Unfortunately he was wrong. The next morning the lighthouse was gone and Walter's body was never found. Over the years the the remains of the lighthouse were examined to determine why it failed. No reason was every found except for the fact that the storm was just so incredibly powerful that nothing could stand in it's way. Just a short distance north of Whale Rock five more people died in Prudence Island Lighthouse and the entire island was completely wiped out. Today a new hurricane called Irene is taking aim at Narragansett Bay. I have heard some of my neightbors along the water say that they aren't worried or scared because it will probably "only" be a cat one when it hits. Sometimes it is wise to be afraid, sometimes very afraid, it what keeps you alive. Perhaps people forget exactly what the ocean and wind is capable of but what remains of Whale Rock can be seen out in Narragansett Bay if anyone needs to be reminded. Perhaps this storm will turn out to be nothing more than just the usual histrionics of the modern media. But the again perhaps Irene will decided to get nasty and unleash the fury of her some of her predecessors. Perhaps people along the coast have nothing to worry about or perhaps now is the time to be very worried. We shall see.
