It was founded by St. Maolcethair in the 7th century and is also strongly associated with St. Brendan the Navigator. The site is situated on the Cosán na Naomh pilgrimage path. Our tour bus stopped here soon after visiting the Blasket Island Visitor's Center on our way back to Dingle. As I'm on a local Nevada Cemetery Board, Graveyards intrigue me in terms of headstone design, what's stated on them, and the honoring of those we died during Ireland's independence battles with the bridges. Then there were all the "random" stones with mass graves belong marking those who died during the Great Hunger. The place was oddly peaceful and we wandered around and one of the few Irish monuments that didn't have a gift shop.

As we were leaving Dingle on what turned out to be a marathon drive to Galway, I convinced Jamie W…read more that we should at least take a peek at the rest of the peninsula before heading northeast. It is a beautiful pastoral area, but what I remembered the most was this landmark from my last visit here 24 years ago and how I could drive right up to it, take a look, and bolt out pretty quickly. This time it wasn't that easy as we had to park in front of a visitors center where we paid €5 to visit it. In an adjacent building, they show a dated seven-minute video which doesn't lend much insight into the building's history. Then we followed a rather lengthy gravel walkway to see the building where a large group of German tourists had already swarmed and gathered for a multitude of photos (photo: http://bit.ly/2p6ZK7v). Once they left, it was much easier to enjoy the simple design of this early Christian church which was built sometime between 600 and 1100 A.D. (photo: http://bit.ly/2oD9qVJ). No one really knows, but everyone says it looks like an upturned boat with a lone window in the back which suggests a certain modernity in its structure (photo: http://bit.ly/2ojbxdW). The space inside is small, just 15 by 10 feet, and there were no artifacts to study. It's considered Ireland's oldest intact building, a tribute to both its design and construction which consisted of carefully stacked rocks with no mortar used. And that's it other than the striking view of the harbor at Ard na Caithne which we could see over the hedge wall (photo: http://bit.ly/2oj4ylj). A large group of Chinese tourists were quickly making their way on the walkway, so it was time to go. I can't honestly say this is a must-see stop in Ireland, but if you happen to be tooling on the peninsula, it's at least a bathroom break. I mean at the visitors center.

The Crucifix Shrine is a life size scene of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is made of white…read morestone and it jumps out in contrast against the dark cliffs. The shrine is popular landmark along Slea Head Drive. Some people call it the Slea Head Crucifix. The exact area is named the "Cornerstone of the Peninsula" because it marks the boundary between two Parishes of the Dingle Peninsula. It was funded by an Irish-American and erected before the1960"s. It stands as a memorial to the fishermen who have lost their lives at sea. I visited the Shrine while driving the 33 mile Dingle loop. The road is very narrow but there is a turn out in front of the statue that will allow you to comfortably access the shrine and take photos. It is pretty popular so you may have to wait your turn to visit.

It was the first cathedral that was built in Ireland after…read moreCatholicism was legalized again in the 1800s (according to a jaunting car driver we had at one point) and it is absolutely massive. It's also an active church with regular services, so make sure to check their website before you try to visit. I attempted to visit multiple times and ran into mass, a funeral, a wedding, and a baptism before I finally got in. The outside of the cathedral alone is absolutely gorgeous. The inside has the most beautiful stained glass windows and it all feels very peaceful and calming. I'm not a religious person but I can definitely see how people feel closer to God here. You can take all the pictures you want inside and there is no fee to enter. As far as I know there aren't any guided tours but I could be wrong about that.

I was at a wedding in this church last summer and it was a beautiful sunny day. The photos outside…read moreturned out brilliant as the setting for the church has lots of flowers and greenery around it. Of course the outside of the church is nice too, it is a lovely traditional looking church both inside and out that is pleasing at any time of the year really. This is a proper country church too as you will always find an old man or two standing outside at the church wall on a Sunday there to speak to his friends and have his weekly chat, then its off to the local shop to get some messages for the week and maybe a pint for good luck. Can be found anywhere in the country really but Glengarriff isn't a village that misses out on this Irish tradition.

This is a beautiful church right in downtown Killarney. They offer free concerts on select nights…read more(the West Point Men's Glee Club Alumni Association was performing the night we were there). The church was built between 1842 and 1855 and was completed in 1855. It is the Gothic Revival style of architecture.
