Modeling for life drawing at an art school in a university and seeing the art students' work…read moreinspired me to try my hand at drawing. I joined the Arizona Artists Guild after finding their website and immediately immersed myself in their activities: attending their regular meetings, viewing the ever-changing exhibits in the building, talking to other members about their work, attending the life drawing sessions to draw as well as to model for the life drawing sessions. The Guild is run by volunteers and I am very impressed by the dedication of the members in participating in the activities, meetings, art sessions (drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, photography, and more), critiques, and other activities. A stockroom area has various art materials (drawing pencils, paints, easels, papers, books, equipment, etc.) available for purchase at minimal cost. They also give out scholarships, hold periodic exhibits and workshops, and the monthly general meetings are always a great opportunity to meet and interact with both seasoned artists as well as those who are just beginning to discover the delights and challenges of art in its various forms and media.

I called before visiting the AZ Artist Guild. A staff person, John, confirmed that the Guild was…read moreopen today from 1-4pm. He suggested if I were visiting today to come before 3:30pm because the artist begin cleaning and closing up shop then. I asked about their art supply store. He told me one never knows what might be inside. He mentioned I might find paints and brushes, beads, paper etc. We arrived a little before 3pm. We were warmly welcomed. On Mondays from 9am-12 noon and Wednesdays from 1-4pm, open studio is available for members. There were six artists, mostly painters, were busy at work. All were sharing of their work and I felt very welcome chatting with each and every person. I actually reconnected with an artist I knew from long ago. I bought a few things from the store and then admired each person's work. The Guild conducts workshops, monthly meetings and art exhibitions. A fun visit. The building is also used by a pleinair and watercolor group of artists. They have their own private parking lot. The building is nicely painted and located on the southeast corner of 7th Avenue and Union Hills.
