One of my favorite places in London and I came here relatively often. The food, Turkish, was very delicious, and the environment is friendly and comfortable. I enjoy all the dangling lamps, but I am also short so I never worried about hitting them. The appetizer I usually get is the hummus. As for entree, I have tried a variety of the dishes and kebabs, and nothing was ever disappointing. My favorite was the lamb kebab. The dessert here is good also. I have also been to Gallipoli Bazaar and Gallipoli Again. I have had great experiences in the other two as well. read more

In London there's always new places to go so I try to never go to the same place twice, but I've been to Gallipoli 3 times so it only means that I absolutely love this place. We always get the set dinner which serves a bit of everything on their menu, which I personally like because I love to try/sample everything. For so much to eat, it's a great price that can't compare to other Turkish restaurants. Not only is the food great, but the atmosphere is amazing. The plethora of hanging lamps gives out an ethnic, homey aura and even though it's constantly busy, you can sit in there for ages and enjoy the setting. Amazing food and ultra-pleasant service. Be prepared to feast like a king while paying prole prices. Really, all you need to know is to order the Set Meal 1. It comes in two waves - one of cold mezzes, then one of hot mezzes. At least two people in your party must order it at ~£11 each, but it's more than satisfying. Winners of the set had to be the juicy mitite kofte (which went exceptionally well with the yogurty manca) and the simple, but satisfying humus. Sometimes the standards are just what you need. Also, if a server asks you if you want the chili sauce, say "Yes, please!" early and often. I kind of wanted to buy a tub of it to take home! Though we were in a rush to leave to scoot on to our next destination, we were each graciously offered a sample of baklava as we piled out the door. Not only did they fill us up, but they sent us packing with one for the road. How can you -not- love a place like that? NB: Be sure to arrive early. Nom nom nom... I am a huge fan of the Trifecta of Gallipoli's Upper Street manifestation, and having to choose one over the other normally involves finding the location with the shortest wait. (Seriously, if I would have known Lebanese and Turkish food was this good, I would NOT have waited 27 years to indulge in the deliciousness.) But this Gallipoli holds a special place in my heart for their outdoor sheesha patio. Sitting on upper street, sipping up strawberry, orange, rose and mint hubbly-bubbly, and watching the world go by is a pretty fantastic way to spend a lazy evening. Ok, let me get the one bad thing out of the way: the service was a bit slow at first. We didn't book, we just turned up and they said to come back an hour later if we wanted to stay for longer than an hour - of course we did. Turkish food? I'm gonna savour it! We came back at the time they suggested, at the same time as two 10+ sized parties, but luckily we were two. After about 15 minutes waiting by the door we were seated, but we were alright with it because we weren't in a rush. It was made up for anyway. We sat down and they immediately took a great interest in our comfort and leisure, served us quickly and were very friendly and chatty. The waiter even made a couple of jokes about people on dates like any nice waiter would to break the ice a little bit. Later, when he apologised for the wait I asked if he could throw in a bit of free flatbread to make up for it. He happily agreed to and it was delicious with some fantastic hommous. The Chicken & Potato dish was fantastic, as was the Lamb Variant, and the Dolmades worked very nicely as a starter, even to my date, a Turkish food newbie. The fact that they were so good to customers as soon as they were actually customers meant more than just trying to woo new customers into coming in, I think, and the food more than made up for it anyway. I Love this place! One of the best, if not the best, restaurant I have eaten at in London. The restaurant is very small, but very good (which is why there is three of them I guess). The restaurant has an authentic flair with all its decorations and the staff is Mediterranean, so that I though I was on vacation (one can dream right?). I am a pescetarian, so I greatly appreciated their great veggie options, but first the hummus was delicious!! In fact everything was delicious and I was there with a group of 10 or so. We all had different things and not one person had less to say than 'amazing'! The prices are also very reasonable (main dishes are less than £10) especially since it is located on Upper Street in Angel. I would definitely recommend this place for people well everyone, unless you don't like Mediterranean food, but if you're going with more than 3/4 people I would make a reservation beforehand, cuz the place is pretty small! Thank goodness for Laura's picture that identified this one as the one next to Odd Bins because I wasn't sure which of the trifecta I went to! I am assuming the food is the same at all three (some shared ktichen somewhere in a back alley along Upper Street), but have no confirmation of this since their website is down. Solid food--a bit of an overwhelming menu--how many ways can you do grilled meat? Well obviously at least 20 different ways--maybe with a side of rice, or maybe on a bed of yogurt, or maybe it is chicken and beef instead of chicken and lamb. But it all tastes delicious. Love the mezze spread, because what's not to love about hummous and fallafel and other Middle Eastern inspired deliciousness in seven little plates in front of you with a big basket of bread! The food is a solid performance. The space is a bit cramped--a woman knocked over the water glass at our table with her handbag as she was walking out and there may have been some other elbows that my dinner guests occurred. Decor is a bit dizzying--lots of lamps and pictures on the wall, and the service is just okay, but I'd get my hummous, lamb and aubergine cravings satisfied here any day or night. read more

Almost my favourite restaurant - either here or Gallipoli Again which serves the same menu. It's always good, there's always loads of food, and the bill is always cheaper than I think it's going to be, considering I feel I can only roll out of the door. Perfect for a group dinner, just order all the meze you fancy, add a couple extra dishes for luck, and you're away. I've never had anything bad. The main courses are great too, if you can fit them in. The decor is cool as well, though you might not think so if you like 'minimalist chic'! One lazy Sunday afternoon I wanted to have a glass champagne and celebrate...well nothing really! So I chose Gallipoli on my stroll around Upper Street before I meet my friend for movies. I ordered four starters and I had nothing to complain about: good portion size, tasty and fresh. I had calamari, prawns, borek and some salad. All were perfectly cooked - though I do realise it is not much for mediterranean! I would come back for another lazy weekend meal - for sure! Great place. Our friends in London took us here our first night in town. We had a wonderful time, and I don't think that's just the jetlag-induced delirium talking. Weeks later, I'm still thinking about the plate after plate of delicious meze. As other reviewers have mentioned, this seems to be a popular spot for birthdays and other celebrations. Two such groups were there when we were, and the waitstaff encouraged them to celebrate by dancing on their chairs. In short order, everyone in the restaurant had followed suit, transforming the restaurant into one of the more bizarre dance parties I've ever seen. Fun times. read more

A Turkish Valentine's Delight. After months & months of walking by, peering in, continued walking, and regret for not stopping - we finally went to Gallipoli for a Valentine's dinner and whoa what a dinner it turned out to be. 1st thing that jumps out at you in Gallipoli is the decor. Turkish/Moroccan lamps hanging from the ceiling (I'm tall & hit my head) and old pictures & artifacts from past empires. I couldn't tell if I was in Bzyantium, Constantinople, or Istanbul - - but I knew it was somewhere in the eastern portion of present-day Turkey, which coincidentially enough is called Gallipoli. Our first decision was the wine - which we immediately chose this Turkish white that turned out to be substantially better than I was expecting from a country not known for the vineyards. Then the 2 course set-menus. Cold Mezze platter & Jumbo Grilled Prawns. Success. Lamb & Chicken grilled skeweres and a Meat Mousakka (spicy Turkish lasagna) Success. Food was off the hook and came in a portion the size of a 3 month old child. Success. Service was lightning quick. The staff provided me with ample assistance while catering to my novice knowledge of the Turkish language when inquiring about specific dishes on the menu. Food down. Turkish coffee brought to the table. Another success. When we paid the bill and were sitting letting the massive amount of Turkish delight fester within our abdomens - our server brought us over two complimentary glasses of god knows what in a fancy glass. Really good restaurant, location, and value for money. The mezze platters are amazingly tasty, and you won't need any other main course nor dessert after that :) The greek salad is not that good though (fake feta...), and the noise level downstairs was comparable to that of a club at 1 PM : too loud for a dinner !!!! There are three Gallipoli's, nestled close to each other along the central stretch of Upper Street, between the twin hells of Highbury and Islington and the Angel. There is not much to pick between the three restaurants, they are all pretty much as good as each other, which is lucky as if one is full - and they get very busy - you can always try one of the others. The Turkish food is excellent value, large portions (you can bring boys here and they'll be happy) and the vibe is really lively and fun. Lots of people come for birthdays and other big celebrations so it's probably not the place to come for an intimate tete-a-tete. The tables are fairly closely packed so you can find yourself being slightly drawn into other people's revelry but not in a hellish TFI Friday sort of way. read more

This place holds a special place for me, it was the first place my now wife took me for dinner... The venue is suitably decorated with a Turkish theme, lights and pictures cover the walls, the tables are simple heavy wood with matching chairs. There are plenty of seats... Probably a few too many as you have to brush up against other diners to get to your seat. The staff are attentive but they have a job to do and aren't going to spend too much time chit chatting. The food.... It's good, the choice is really good and there are lots of traditional favourites. The meze starter we went for was tasty and had a good variety of choice. If I'm honest I wasn't blown away by anything we had but I would happily return (as I have done). Ok, so I've given it an average review but four stars??!... Well here's the best bit!!! Food was good, delicious, the grilled chicken was a little dry compared to the Afghan style which is marinated with yogurt. The limb was very tender and juicy. The wrap was good too. 2. Service was good, very attentive. Free desserts at the end. Take out box with a bag and a smile. Very friendly staff. 3. Price is good too. It is not cheap but it is reasonable with decent portion. Overrated! For someone that adores Turkish food and will salivate over tarmasalata, this was a major disappointment. People had been raving to me about the food here and it was a big wah wah! We ordered the vegetarian meze plate to share and a bunch of other dishes. The meze was not great, a mess of similar-type cold dishes - it just seemed unfriendly. Can you describe food as unfriendly? Came here on Friday with 7 friends. It was Valentine day, so the place had a bit of "romantic" twist with rose petals and a pre sent menu at £25 for 3 courses. Overall the atmosphere is nice, as a mediterranean bistrot. The starters were mezze to share (hummus, tzaziki etc), then we had one main each. i had the Shish Tauk (I think it is written in this way, the chicken marinated cubes with rice). it was very good and abundant. My friends had wonderful desserts (brownies with ice creams among others), I had a shot of amaretto instead. I will come back on a normal night to check out the a la carte menu. read more

The Gallipoli restaurants on Upper Street have great atmosphere, whether night or day. The soft lighting from the colorful lamps and ornate hookahs give a wonderful setting for a relaxed turkish coffee or mint tea. The food is amazing, and really large portions too. I love the lively atmosphere, its very popular even on the weekdays. On the summer evenings, you can sit outside and smoke a hookah on the pavement, which looks like so much fun. The meze collection for two or more people is excellent value for money for less than £9 per person. You are served over ten dishes including items such as hummus, falafel, vine leaves, stewed lamb, chicken and various bean salads. Round it all off with one of their superb desserts which adorn the glass window by the entrance of the restaurant. The combination fresh mint teas are wonderful (try the mint tea with rosewater v. nice). The Turkish apple tea is also quite pleasant but pretty sweet. My sister and I stopped here for lunch at the weekend and I chose it simply because it had a spare table outside. I'm so glad we did choose it because the food was delicious. So full of flavour. The 2 course lunch menu is worth every penny. My sister had a spicy kofte filled with cheese and I had the chicken with pitta and salad. To start we shared the most amazing dip with chunks of bread. Very nice Turkish on upper st. Visited too many time to remember and have always come away happy. A Meal for two plus wine your looking at around £60 which is ok for Upper st. This place is all about cool location and the lovely venue rather than the food. However if like me you live in North London we are very lucky to be spoilt with a number of excellent Turkish restaurants. If it's all about the food,portion size and cost then I suggest you head to Green Lanes where you can find a dozen places with portions double in size for half the price. Check out my review on Gokyazu which is a 10 minute walk from Manor House station. This place is great if on a night out in Islington or if you fancy heading to a lively buzzy restaurant in a cool part of London. read more

Recommended to me by a chic friend who lived in Angel. This is a really fun atmosphere with good food to bolster it! It's a bit tight on space, but that's what also gives its charm. You won't be disappointed with the dishes, especially the meat platters were very good. And it won't hurt your pocket book at all. This is a cute small Turkish restaurant. The interior is warm and creates an Eastern atmosphere with many lamps hanging from the ceiling and many frames with old photos on the walls. The service is good as well. But I'm afraid the good things end there. The appetisers were not tasting great, not to mention that they were not very authentic either. The main dishes that we had were simple and well-cooked, but frankly, you can get the same kebab in basically every corner in London. The dessert list is a joke...The only Turkish item is a (horrible) baklava and there is a choice of "European" items like Profiteroles(wtf?). These guys could just send someone with a bus to nearby Green Lanes and get some baklava for their store. But I guess, why bother? In addition to that, they do not offer Turkish tea (due to lack of space, according to one of the waiters). That is a big success, since this is the first (out of many around the world) Turkish restaurants that does not offer the traditional tea. Even my Turkish barbers in London serve such tea! read more

having spent 3 weeks in the middle east you would have thought that this cuisine had bored me-but i was craving hummus and the aroma of lamb and beef drew me in to this busy restaurant. I took the window seat and ordered the hummus and a side order marinated lambs liver to start. I also ordered plain carrot juice without orange-what arrived was carrot juice with orange-never a good combination. the hummus was ok but the bread was a pitifully small portion and was clearly not produced on the premises-flat and cold. The lamb and chicken shish was average and came with rice (which I didn't request) would have preferred more salad. That said i can imagine this place is buzzing in the evenings and a preferred option to the horsemeat served in the local kebab takeaways! read more

This intimate, lively and nicely affordable restaurant is a great choice for something a little different in the Angel Islington area. The staff are very friendly and the delicious Turkish food is very tasty, while portions are refreshingly generous . On a hot summer's day (!) you can sit outside as well and watch the world go by on Upper Street. My only criticism is that on a birthday the raucousness can grate a little. Unless it is your birthday though, and you will find yourself drinking a shot and climbing onto the table in no time! Definitely worth a visit. read more
