It was a hiking trip and I was afraid that I will lose my passport so I only brought my drivers licenses and a digital copy of passport. Maybe we communicated in English and it's not her first language, it took her a long time for her to ask for the digital copy and accept it. I was to pay $428.28 USD for the week when I picked up the car. There was no reference to payment in Swiss Francs. When I picked up the car in June, Europcar charged me 379 CHF (I now suspect the equivalent value of $428.12 of Swiss Francs in January 2025). That sum (379 CHF) converted to $479.93 because of the devalued dollar. Now, I can well understand having to pay in Swiss Francs if my contract called for payment in Swiss Francs, and I would have done so without a thought. But my contract was in US Dollars only; there was never a reference anywhere in the contract to Swiss Francs; and I never agreed to pay Swiss Francs. Both Europcar and I agreed in a binding contract for payment in USD of $428.12. Long story short, I was taken for $50 dollars. This is a relatively small amount, but it is the principal of the matter, and this speaks volumes about the character of this company. I expected Europcar to be something much more than an extremely small and petty enterprise. Very disappointed!

Beware! Avis scammed me out of $4,000!…read more I rented a car for 3 weeks from Avis. I declined the ~$70 per day insurance. The car I was given was in very poor condition: lots of body damage, missing door seals making it very noisy on the highway. The agent told me that the car was in poor condition and not all the damage was logged and suggested that I could take pictures but it wasn't completely necessary because they were aware of the state of the car. It was very late in the evening and I was exhausted after a long day of travel so I foolishly didn't take any pictures. When I returned the car I was billed $4,000 for a variety of tiny dings around the car that were very clearly related to a variety of small incidents, no doubt over the lifetime of the car. I did appeal this. The appeal was denied on the basis that without pictures I couldn't prove that the damage was preexisting. I asked for any pictures of the car before I rented it so that I could show the damage _was_ preexisting, but was ignored. I also asked if the appeal staff could talk to the agents in Geneva familiar with the car. I was ignored again. Overall, I had a very sub-par car for my rental period and then was basically scammed out of $4,000. Needless to say that I will never rent from Avis again and I'd definitely recommend avoiding them.

I noticed it the next day and drove back to the airport to have it updated which was a major inconvenience to the start of my trip as I had already left Zurich area. This was brushed off by the associate without acknowledging the subsequent issues this mix-up could have caused if I drove a car that wasn't logged appropriately on their end. Second, after the car was returned and already invoiced- I received an email stating that there was 'damage' along the wheel arch which was classified as 'scratch down to primer.' This is inaccurate as the wheel arch of that specific model is made of plastic and there is no paint/primer there. Rather than providing clear pictures of the 'damage' substantiating their claim, they are automatically charging me $600+. This lack of accountability and poor customer service are reasons why I will not rent from this company again.

Better than the reviews let on…read more Showed up around noon for my 6AM reservation, and while I got scolded for showing up late, they luckily still had vehicles. Originally offered a Renault Kadjar, but for upgrades was offered either an Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Mercedes E-Klasse, or BMW X1 for anywhere between 17-22 CHF per day. Took the BMW, and was literally a brand-new car with only 20km on the odometer. Employee also unlocked the factory navigation system for us at no additional charge, which came GREATLY in handy driving through unfamiliar lands. Was told that driving into Austria would require a sticker, but was not given instruction on how to get that. Has to go back to the location to ask for clarification on how this worked, so also a minus along with being scolded for my late arrival (which is to be expected since the Swiss have a reputation for being timely). Car was beautiful and drove great. No issues there. Return of the car went well; employee gave it a look over and didn't need anything extra from me. We were able to charge the final amount to a different credit card right at the desk in the garage without having to go up to the main desk. For those having trouble finding the location in the airport, look for the sign "Mietwagen;" this is German for rental cars. Would rent again from this location, for sure.

BIG SCAM ARTISTS!!…read more Absolutely unacceptable experience with Hertz in Zurich airport. I rented a car from Interlaken for just a few hours (Interlaken to Zurich airport. No issues were mentioned at pickup or drop-off (key dropbox). Then the next day, I was hit with a 550 CHF (~$700 USD) charge for a scratch I did NOT cause. They claim there was a tiny 1/2-inch scratch under the front right bumper. However, the pickup report already showed existing damage on the front bumper--so this could very well have been pre-existing. Hertz ignored that and blamed me anyway. Even worse, they provided NO clear before-and-after photo evidence proving I caused the damage. Despite disputing the charge, they still took my $700 money. This feels like a dishonest and predatory practice--charging customers without solid proof and hoping they won't fight it. Seems like this SCAM is happening many, many, many times over based on past reviews. Take photos and videos of EVERYTHING (especially under the bumpers) if you rent from here. What car doesn't have scratches underneath it!!??? I strongly recommend avoiding Hertz and using other companies like SIXT or Europcar or Misho Car rental instead.
