BIG SCAM ARTISTS!! Absolutely unacceptable experience with Hertz in Zurich airport. I rented a car from Interlaken for just a few hours (Interlaken to Zurich airport. No issues were mentioned at pickup or drop-off (key dropbox). Then the next day, I was hit with a 550 CHF (~$700 USD) charge for a scratch I did NOT cause. They claim there was a tiny 1/2-inch scratch under the front right bumper. However, the pickup report already showed existing damage on the front bumper--so this could very well have been pre-existing. Hertz ignored that and blamed me anyway. Even worse, they provided NO clear before-and-after photo evidence proving I caused the damage. Despite disputing the charge, they still took my $700 money. This feels like a dishonest and predatory practice--charging customers without solid proof and hoping they won't fight it. Seems like this SCAM is happening many, many, many times over based on past reviews. Take photos and videos of EVERYTHING (especially under the bumpers) if you rent from here. This Hertz franchisee at Zurich airport has tried to pin pre-existing damage to my rental car on me. How do I know it was pre-existing? By seeing THEIR OWN PHOTOS OF THE VEHICLE BEFORE I RENTED IT! They charged my credit card for damages I was not responsible for the day after I returned their vehicle, before I was given any opportunity to respond to the damage report. They then refused to open up a formal review so my insurer could independently review the evidence, declaring the case closed. I was steamrolled, declared guilty before being given a chance to review and correct their mistake. Beware of Hertz Zurich Airport, they appear to engage in questionable business practices. Be sure to check your vehicle out before driving it off the premises, get your own pictures, and do not sign any vehicle condition reports until pre-existing damages have been clearly identified and indicated in the report. I have been in the travel industry and renting cars for 30 years, and this place is definitely running a scam. I rented and returned my car without incident. There was no one in the return lot to greet us, which was odd. But I dropped the key in the drop box as instructed and went through security. Two hours later, while waiting to board my flight, I received an email stating there was "damage" to the vehicle. They provided shots of what looked like maybe a rock chip or something on each side door?? It's impossible to see from the pictures. But even if they are legit, are we expected to be super human and prevent rock chips or door dings? How ridiculous. They basically charged me CHF650 to fix both, which also seems a bit farfetched. CHF650 to fix a little chipped paint with a colored pen? Had I read all the negative reviews, I would never have rented from this location. Don't be fooled by the seemingly low prices that they offer, as they have obviously found a way to make up the difference. I already emailed our account rep, who didn't even have the courtesy to respond. Not sure if I should contest the charges with my credit card company, or just get straight to reporting them to the BBB...? Trust me. Avoid this location at all costs. This Hertz borderlines on running a massive scam operation, it's unethical what they are doing. Firstly, because I have my own insurance coverage and secondary through my credit card, I declined their coverage they offered. I think this is where the green light is for them to be predatory. Because of this, they put a $3600 HOLD on my credit card, which is absolutely insane. I don't think I've ever rented a vehicle where the hold was more than $500 or so at most. Secondly, upon returning the vehicle, they claimed damage to the driver's door for the amount of $300! In the attached picture they there is a scratch and dent. You tell me? Absolutely ridiculous. If there even is a dent, it's imperceptible unless under the most scrutinous of searches. That's an outrageous amount to charge for something that may have already been there to begin with when I picked the vehicle up. Avoid at all costs, they will nickel and dime you here for everything. Do NOT rent from Hertz in Zurich and do NOT return a rental car to Hertz at the Zurich airport. You will be sorry. When we returned a vehicle to Hertz at the Zurich airport they claimed there were new tiny chips in the windshield that they wanted to charge us $390 Euros to repair. However, the tiny chips existed in the windshield when we rented the vehicle (though they were so tiny we did not notice them throughout our trip). In response to their email claiming damage to the windshield, on December 15 we sent Hertz an email asking for information related to a number of questions such as if there was a formal or informal number of claims the airport needed to find, the number of claims made against people who lived outside of Switzerland vs were natives, and much more. Within 24 hours Hertz got back to us, never responded to any of the questions we asked, and instead just "apologized for the misunderstanding" and withdrew the $390 Euro charge. Hertz's refusal to respond to any of our requests for information, and their immediate withdrawal of the supposed damage claim, raises serious questions about if the answers to any of the questions indicate fraud by Hertz Zurich airport. Worst rental company ever...I wish I had read the reviews here prior to making a reservation with this lousy company. We returned our rental before opening hours since we ad an early flight from Zurich. First of all they charged me 550 Euros for an alleged damage (looks from the pictures they sent like a smudge on one of the panels, taking into consideration that we never scrapped the car during our rental) then they charged us another 40 Euros for gas although we filled up the car less than 3 KMs from the airport. Lastly they want to collect 63 euros in administrative fees for a ticket that allegedly we got. All they did was send us an email to let us know that we will be receiving an email from the authorities regarding that ticket. I will never rent from Hertz again. read more

Probably the worst experience I've ever had with a car rental company. They tried to charge me for damages to a car that I did not cause. They literally taped a mirror casing back together with duct tape and tried to tell me that they would not do that because it's against the law. But I would?? Refused to provide adequate pictures of the car prior to my rental despite the fact that I had pictures of prior damage. Couldn't help but think it was a clear money grab because they knew I had the means to pay. Sent me hidden admin fees almost a month later that were exorbitant. They even sent me a file detailing this damage, with pictures, from 2 months before my rental. Yet even with this evidence, they claimed a tiny scratch on the left rear wheel was new and tried to charge me for it. As if the left rear wheel isn't going to get scraped if the whole rear left side gets scraped. And, of course, they didn't include any detailed pictures of that wheel in their report. Returned it in the exact condition I received it. The next morning, I was sent a letter and charged $690 for a new scratch on the door that wasnt there the night before. I sent them pictures and video of the van as it was when I returned it, but to no avail. They insisted on charging me. Upon looking at other similar reviews on this site where this same thing happened to others, one can conclude that one of two things is happening: Either, 1. Warning! Video or picture everything and note every single thing, no simple you may think. I wouldn't be surprised if the attendant and her co-worker or boss (whatever position he has) is compensated for reporting claims. A very small (2.5" / 6mm) scratch on the plastic bumper = $1,635.77 in repair bill from PurCo Fleet Services in Utah USA. The scratch is so small it took her multiple times to take the picture and had to put the rectangle key fob next to it to show the scratch. I rent vehicles often and have for 20+ years of business and leisure travel. A small scratch like this is dismissed or told by the attendant "you don't need to worry or note that." My wife and I were told after I tried to state my case that she (and her boss or co-worker overlooking) was not submitting the claim and apologized. We said thank you and left. Well, as soon as we get to our gate to fly I receive an email of the damage claim. My customer signature shows "Customer refuses to sign". Surprise to me! I was never asked to sign something. I'm writing this review to warn people not to rent here. I rented a vehicle that had a bunch of scratches/marks and a couple of small dents. I videotaped the car at the airport before I drove off just in case. I caused no damage to the vehicle. When I returned the vehicle nothing was mentioned. I received a notification during my flight that I was charged $1800. Hertz also tried to charge again, another $1900. Luckily my credit card denied the second charge. I had to prove to my credit card that I was wrongfully charged. This took about two months with a lot of paperwork and the videos that I took. It was finally reversed. Do yourself a favor and do not rent from here. I have rented hundreds of cars in my life and this is the first time I was wrongfully charged. It's not worth the false charges and then having to argue with my credit card company! read more

On return they showed us 2 mini dents on the roof that they claimed were due to hail. If only I knew to check the roof before renting......... What is most interesting is that the return agent was able to spot the dents through all the dew on the roof (he had to polish up the top for us to even see them) - something tells me he knew they were there. I posted this on Google Reviews but trying to post anywhere I can so that other people are aware of how horrible my experience was. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION. To start, I was rented a vehicle with a large dent to the front bumper but then was charged 350 CHF + 90 CHF after dropping off the vehicle for a pre-existing scratch to the left rear wheel rim. I had read some of these reviews prior to renting so I took photos of the car so have evidence that it was there before but it is a process to try to get any type of refund. Would do yourself a favor & rent from elsewhere UPDATE: After my initial email was answered by customer service, given case # etc, I had not heard any response for months until today when I received an email stating that I now owe 49CHF from an invoice dated a week ago "regarding an administrative fee and / or fine due to a traffic violation that you received during your rental with Hertz" with an account to WIRE TRANSFER money to. It also stated that if I did not pay, I would be sent to a collection agency. I never received an invoice & checked my Hertz account to confirm this before emailing back including customer service. About an hour later, I received the invoice with same number & date that had been referenced in the email BUT IT WAS JUST MY ORIGINAL INVOICE from my car rental in October 2023 updated as I had disputed the charges with my credit card company after no response from Hertz. However, there was no added administrative charge, documentation etc that confirmed or explained that I now owe 49 CHF. I have obviously reached out to customer service yet again but I'm just baffled at the way this company is operating & treating customers. They gave us a car that was dented on the passenger and stains on the drivers side. This was the one car on the road in this condition in the whole country. When we asked to change it, the staff was very rude. They told us we can take it or cancel our reservation. When I tried to record the conversation she threatened to call the police. My experience with Hertz at Zurich has by far been the worst experience I've ever had at a car rental company. I booked a small compact car for $272 back for a week in May 2023. When I booked the car, I did take few pictures of the car but not in great detail of the wheels. The car looked fine overall and we didn't spot any scratches or dents in the vehicle. We returned the car after a week and had absolutely 0 accidents or close encounters. When the Hertz inspection officer looked at the vehicle, he said that there has been damage to the front right wheel and we are responsible for this damage. He said that we need pay 80 CHF for the wheel damage and an additional 90 CHF as an Admin fee. We were taken aback by this since we did absolutely no wrong. Can you even spot the damage to the wheel in the picture? Is this worth 170 CHF? In spite of being a Hertz President's circle member, this is the treatment that we get? Is this how you treat tourists from the US in Switzerland? Our memorable trip has been overshadowed due to this wrinkle. We paid $272 for the car and ended up paying $200 of this damage. For what? The experience I had with them flirts with dishonesty, perhaps a scam. Upon renting they ask you to inspect the car in a crammed, dark parking lot where it is impossible to walk next to your car, and even harder to see anything. Then, upon return, they inspect your car with a magnifier and charge you for anything they find. In my case, it was a tiny scratch on a wheel hub. When I protested that I most definitely was not responsible for it, I was simply called a liar to my face. When I told them how aggravating their approach to customer service was, they asked me to leave. I had to pay 400$ for a tiny scratch on a hub that would have been totally impossible to see in their dark parking lot, assuming it were possible to actually stand next to the car. I got a small speeding find of $40 dollars for being 0-5km/h over the speed limit in Zurich. I was OK to pay the fine, however then Hertz sent me a letter explaining that they had charged me an additional $50 for looking up my contact details for the police. $50 admin to look up my address? So my fine cost $90, of which majority was because of Hertz. Thank you very much Hertz, This is the VERY last time I will use your company.
