This is the best (and one of the last) independent family-run hardware stores in NYC. Bob, the owner, has an incredible selection in his smaller-than-BigBox store in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. I often find items here that HD or Lowes (or Amazon) don't stock, so I finally decided to forget them (except for large power tools), and have gone to Garden Hardware first for years now. Unlike the BigBoxes, where you usually can't find anyone with knowledge to help you, Bob has decades of expertise in all areas. All of the local contractors and building supers come here to solve building and maintenance issues. Also, he is the ONLY hardware store left in NYC to stock theatrical supplies, so the Broadway show crews come here for everything they need, as well. I have shopped here many times. The service is inconsistent. I stopped by today to pick up a few small items (neighborhood hardware store that specializes is small items). My total was 9.75. The owner said I could not use my debit card unless it was over 10.00. Such a short sided decision from the owner. I did not have any cash and he would not let me purchase my items. So..... he did get his way, but I will no longer use their services. Congrats, you might have saved a few pennies, but you lost a lifetime customer. But the way I am certain my long term sales would have mire than made up for your policy that cost you twenty five cents!!! It it too bad as this place is super close to my apt. read more

My apartment would literally be falling apart if it wasn't for Bob over at Garden Hardware. I've gone there many times to not only buy stuff but ask questions and get free advice from Bob, the guy who runs the place. Thankfully my apartment building is right next door. Bob seems to know something if not more than that about just everything. He also knows just about every contractor and building super in Hell's Kitchen, and has referred me to a few different people that I've hired to help me out. Screw Angie's List - just ask Bob (should I trademark that?). His hardware store has nearly everything you'll need for your home improvement projects, and, if it doesn't, he'll order it for you and it'll get there fast. His prices are better than Lowes and Home Depot and so is his service. I just wish they were open longer hours as they close promptly at 5pm and aren't open Sundays. Any contractor in the area knows that Garden Hardware is the place to go. Sure, Metropolitan Lumber & Hardware over on 11th Ave is much larger and has more stuff, but the people over there are seriously rude and most have no idea what they're talking about. Love this store! It may feel a little overwhelming but just ask. They legit have everything and some stuff is stored in the basement. The guy also won't try and sell you something more expense or you don't need. So always ask/tell him what you are doing if you are unsure. read more

This is a serious hardware store. If you need a part, many stores will have one size and this one will have a full range.They have quality things and if you ask they will give great advice. It's a small business with integrity, less confusing,more convenient and much quicker to get in and out than the big chain stores. They have very fair prices and a surprising number of things for a neighborhood store. read more

The first Sunday of every month, in my church, we can give a testimony on our faith. This is the only Hardware store, in my memory, to be brought up during that time. And it wasn't me. These guys won't jerk you around. Go to them with a problem and they'll tell you how to fix it. I just went for brackets that my landlord said I had to get for my air conditioner. (New New York requirement) The clerk reminded me to take my receipt because I may be able to get the money back from my Landlord. read more

Garden Hardware and Supply specializes in supplying hardware to theater production companies on Broadway, but my roommate and I have found the staff to be the most reliable and knowledgeable in Hell's Kitchen. When we canvassed the neighborhood looking for someone to install a deadbolt, and everyone else wanted to charge us $150, the owner quickly told us how "any idiot" could do the same job themselves for $10 in supplies. They've consistently been helpful, honest, and reliable. People in Hell's Kitchen should go here for advice, even if it's a little pricier than the Home Depot down in Chelsea - only downside is they're closed on weekends. read more

Excellent old-time hardware store. Bob knows hardware, has great suggestions and ideas, and is a nice nice guy. Once I needed some brass screws; he turned me loose on my own with a bucket of screws and a magnet so I could distinguish solid brass from plated steel. A tube of caulk that wouldn't harden - no problem, he was aware of the manufacturer's problem and replaced the tube. He stocks stuff I didn't find at Home Depot, like a small can of SAE 20 machine oil. In sum: I highly recommend Garden Hardware. read more
