I have always been very pleased with the service and selection with this neighborhood hardware shop near CUMC (Columbia University Medical Center). The guys who work there are very friendly and helpful. They even gave me a free (formerly filled with merchandise) box and tape once when I came in to buy a box and packing materials to ship something and their boxes for sale didn't fit appropriately. I have had keys made here, and they did the job very quickly with an excellent product. Overall, there is a standard, appropriate selection of NYC hardware store goods, from light bulbs to fans to paint, and there are always several employees around to help you. I've never had to wait in line to pay for more than 5 minutes. If you need hardware supplies and are in this area, I heartily recommend 165th Hardware. Awesome local shop. Angel helped me find all the things I needed. One piece of hardware, I didn't know the name of & could only describe, but he showed me everything in the store that fit the description until we found the exact piece! Also, they do a quick and easy AC installation. I bought a small btu unit there in the morning and they delivered and installed it in my place within that same hour. Incredible! Awesome store! I came down here from where I live at 190th St and was not disappointed to have made the trek. The guy at the front copied both of my keys for me. One was a deadbolt lock key, which was trickier to make (I had it copied at another spot for $20 and it did not work). The guys tried the first time, knew it wouldn't work, and immediately remade it for me. I got home, and they both worked PERFECTLY. I'll definitely come back to this store in the future whenever I need keys made or other hardware items. Although I didn't get anything else, they have a great selection, and the store is extremely clean and items reasonably priced. read more

The key copy worked, and didn't take too long to be copied. The pricing was reasonable. Even though the venue was cramped, they have everything you need in your daily life. I even got myself two mason jars just for fun. read more

On Wed. 013013, at about 4:30pm, trying to get in, the police lock(type of lock is no longer used) on my front door of my pre-war apt. broke off at the cylinder, leaving me locked out of my apt. After about a half hour of walking around in search of a local locksmith and 3 hardware stores later, I ended up at 165 St. HARDWARE INC. which is some 15 blocks away from my apt. Behind the counter is Emilio, who just happened to be the locksmith on the premise, on duty and available. After telling him my situation he agreed to handle the job. The 165 Hardware owner, Ramon Lora, drove us back to my apt. Emilio was able to get the door open, make a phone call to track down the replacement part to repair the old police lock, left to pick up the part, returned and repaired the lock...all before the wifey came home. Everything was done by 6pm...and for an EXTREMELY reasonable fee. This was definitely 5Star, BIG tip service all around. Emilio, Ramon...165 St. HARDWARE INC. saved my day. read more
