Donovan Hatem LLP: Slow, Unresponsive, Uncaring…read more As a trustee of a condo association, I worked with a Donovan attorney on a memo to help settle a construction dispute among owners, with an unbiased opinion on how trustees should read the docs. He was brought in by another trustee who he was friends with. He took months to review a few condo and construction docs and presented a final version memo that was totally inaccurate and incomplete in my own attorney's opinion as well as mine. The attorney (Jon Cowan) admitted there were major issues with the document on calls with me and my attorney and in writing to the condo board. However, after over $11k and 6 weeks to produce the document, Donovan Hatem demanded more money to fix what was incredibly sloppy work that should have not been delivered or at the very least been marked Draft 1. The board refused to pay him more money and the attorney refused to fix the issues for no fee so we got stuck with a useless and incomplete $11,000 document. So his inaccuracies to the memo went knowingly uncorrected - he basically said to me when I complained (and I paraphrase), "Hey, my report is inaccurate and I know it, your board won't pay me to fix it, tough luck." Is this possible or ethical? I know when I make a mistake, I do not charge my clients to fix it. The attorney was also very unresponsive and didn't reply to most of my emails (and I didn't send many). So I never knew if he was actually seeing the important information I was sending him and paying him to review. I asked him to reply to my emails and he had his IT folks set up a rude auto-reply that still didn't tell me if he saw what I was sending him. This was super awful client service. I would NOT put anything important or complicated in the care of this firm or their attorneys. In my opinion, the attorney I worked with could not get his head around the issues or the documents to connect the dots and his managers didn't seem to care about the damage that was caused. Also, for fairness and complete transparency, I gave Donovan Hatem's management a chance to view their employee's work and speak to me. After all, I know the attorney I worked with doesn't own the firm and I wanted to be fair. The reality is I take posting bad reviews very seriously. Their attorney's admitted oversights were way too big for any firm to overlook in my opinion. So after a week they scheduled a 30 minute meeting. But then the day of the meeting they moved it last minute and the day of the call they all had Zoom issues (I am not sure they know how to use it), called me rude when I asked to finish my comments and called me an extortionist. (Simply because I tried to talk to them and resolve the issue before I gave them a bad online review.) More alarming was that they didn't even review their lawyer's work prior to the call even with 10 days to prepare. So I would steer clear of this whole firm. In my opinion their attorneys are sloppy and slow and their customer service as awful.

Maybe that's just what this sort of service costs? Our mortgage approval process and negotiating the punchlist with the seller did involve some hiccups, but nothing too unusual. I was surprised more of the work was not given to a paralegal. Only when the closing was imminent did we learn that the firm does not act as a closing attorney, and that we still had to find a closing attorney -- that's the kind of thing I'd have appreciated being notified about in advance.

We were connected with him through our ARAG services at work and ended up not being very happy. He does the bare minimum (or at least did with us... we were purchasing a home). After the purchase was completed we found out from both our realtor and broker that there were some things he should have done but asked them to do, which they thought was odd but didn't want to hold up our process... from what I can tell he does the bare minimum needed to get paid by our ARAG program. We also needed some additional help with something after the sale because we couldn't get a hold of the seller's attorney and he said he would reach out and make some calls and then never got back to us and is just ignoring our calls and emails. Others might have a good experience, however I feel he is just in it to get your money for the least amount of work needed.
