I called Alavi and spoke with him for about ten minutes. I was explaining that I belived the seller would back out a deal we made. Alavi advised that my offer was not valid unless it was deposited by the agent representing the seller. He then said he would send an email and would be glad to help me to ensure the seller would not renege on my deal. Alvi sent me an email and I responded with all the information he requested. About an hour later I received an email stating that he could not represent me because he is too busy. I just think it's not reliable or responsible to ask me to retain him and then for him to lie to me about being busy. Ali was our attorney for the purchase of our home in 2016 - recommended by our realtor. My husband and I were relocating back to Boston from CT. I was in an intense new job in Boston, driving back to CT on weekends and somehow finding time to house shop during the week. My first call with Ali, I believe, was as we were nearing the deadline to sign a purchase and sale. There were enough issues in our inspection to justify backing out. So we needed to make a decision. I was a bit of a mental mess given the crazy logistics of my life at the time. Also, we were buying in Dorchester, which I was somewhat unfamiliar with, having lived in Somerville for 14 years prior to moving to CT. Plus, it was a major fixer upper, and this was meant to be our "live in it till we die" house -- it was a big decision. When I called Ali to see if we could extend the deadline, he immediately recognized the anxiety in my voice, even having never talked with me before. He have a warm laugh, said this was not worth being stressed about, and of course we could move the deadline back a few days. HIs phone presence was both professional and compassionate. I felt an immediate weight off my shoulders and a sense of confidence in him. But the clincher came at our closing. The seller's attorney was a blatantly racist conspiracy theorist, who clearly enjoyed bating us to see how we might react to his incendiary comments. It was bizarre to say the least. The lawyer threw out all sorts of things he figured city lefties would hate and baited Ali in all sorts of atrocious ways (like saying something about being nervous when he sees "one of you people" on a plane). Ali's name and looks made him a target...good thing I didn't disclose that I was Jewish and my realtor didn't disclose that he was gay... If I had been 15 years younger I would have gone off trying to put this guy in his place, which would have accomplished nothing except maybe screwing up the closing on our wonderful house. Ali somehow managed to keep his dignity while also being gracious. He managed to redirect the conversation (my realtor also took one for the team by listening to this guy's insane stories for a bit) while maintaining enough of a relationship with the crazy lawyer to ensure all the paperwork was signed properly. After we closed, Ali's office provided a bit more communication to be sure everything was 100% in order. A gracious, compassionate, smart, thoughtful attorney with equally competant colleagues in his office, who gives you full confidence that he will get the job done, regardless of odd circumstances.
