The Gare de l'Est (East Station) is two train stations: one being part of the Paris Metro line, connecting Lines 4, 5, and 7 and the other being the one of seven Paris mainline stations supporting TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) going to various cities in Europe. My nephew and I had planned a weekend trip to Luxembourg, and this station was the origination of the 2.5 hour high-speed trip, beginning early on a Saturday morning. We came from different places in Paris using Metro, and met up here. The walk from the Metro part of the station to the main central holding area takes a bit of time, with need to closely follow signs pointing to Gare de l'Est. About 24 minutes before the scheduled departure of our train, the platform number came up on the big board. At that point, we used the QR code from our purchased ticket to pass through the security gate of the platform. Then it was a long outdoor walk parallel to the train until one finds the correct car. We left right on-time. We came back to the same station from Luxembourg, and it was a simple matter of reversing direction back to the Metro side of the station to get back to our dorm/hotel. read more

Navigating thru this station is a nightmare once you arrive by Metro. Missed our train because of no clear signs and help available in the station. Had to exchange out pre-booked tickets and paid an additional fee for the same. Strongly recommend having a lot of buffer if you are planning on taking a train from here. read more

Love this beautiful metro station. Built in 1849, you can just imagine all of this history that has travelled on these tracks. For the Paris Olympics, it was so easy to use this station to get to the venues. Follow the pink directional signs or the app to navigate your journey. read more

This station was pretty awesome, and I'm still somewhat surprised that it isn't connected to Gare du Nord. It could have been, but I suspect that they never got around to doing it, and now it is just too difficult to actually do that. Anyway, it's a short walk to the other station. Actually, it turned out that this was the first station I arrived at when I came to Paris for the first time. It's a pretty cool, and pretty large, station as well. This train station is also called Paris-Est. The train at station is in the 10th arrondissement. You can walk from Gare du Nord. It was opened in 1849 and was first called Gare de Strasbourg. One of my favorite stations here in Paris. There's plenty of stores, very clean, easy to catch taxis and Uber, and there's even electric bikes you can rent right outside the main entrance. Nicer than most intercity rail stations, Gare de l'Est is very close (a few blocks) to Gare du Nord. Gare du Nord is the more glamorous train station these days because the super fast Eurostar pulls in there. Gare de l'Est is smaller and easier to navigate. It's also a little swankier in the older portions. The Orient Express used to end / begin here. They also have a Starbucks that is perfectly positioned for people watching at the main axis. read more

Took the fast train from Germany into Paris France. The ride was a breeze and well appointed as we were in the first class train. I highly recommend you not skimp on the ticket and go first class. I don't have a ton of train stations to compare this to, but this seemed like a perfectly good one. There were shops and a couple places to grab a quick bite. Things I didn't like, lounge was tiny and they didn't update the board with our train platform until it was time to start boarding. Was a mild annoyance but oh well. MUCH nicer than Gare du Nord! Gare de l'Est was in general very clean and easy to get around. There are a good number of kiosks to grab a snack, sandwich or coffee and a surprising (to me anyway) amount of actual stores. If you need to grab something for dinner on the way home, there's a M&S Food. Toilets available but I believe you pay €1, as they are run by a private company. Easy connections to the Metro, and Gare du Nord is close too. read more

It's really too bad that one has to catch the Eurostar from Gare du Nord. I'd really much rather catch a train here at Gare de l'Est. It is a much more sane station! We took the metro from Les Halles to Gare de l'Est to catch the TGV to Reims. We had a little time to spare, so we did some window shopping before boarding our train. We also used the Pay Toilettes for 1€. The toilet cleans itself before you use it. Nice. Don't mind paying for clean toilets! As soon as the departure screen showed our train's platform number, we headed to our train. We got lucky that our car was the first car. If you haven't had the chance to ride a bullet train like the TGV, do it! Our train to Reims was new and the ride was very comfortable even though the train was going as fast as 197 miles per hour! Really cool since we have nothing like this in the States! Oh and the train station has free wifi for 20 min! All you need to do is watch a short video. read more

This station is huge! They offered us complimentary water upon our arrival, we assume as a kind gesture to help make up for the hour late arrival. I expect we will spend more time here when we leave Paris tomorrow, so I'll update my review if they have WiFi available. The associates at the SNCF office are very helpful. I just wish smoking was not allowed in the station. Easy access to the Metro. La gare de l'Est is, for me, the most beautiful parisian train. It is majestic and reserved, beautiful and discreet. Unlike the other major stations in Paris, the Gare de l'Est looks like a train station of rich provincial town. It lies in the tenth arrondissement, near from Gare du Nord. This is a pleasant idea that walking from one to the other. From the Gare de l'Est, travellers go to such cities as Reims, Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Germany by using TGV East or TER. read more

Gare de L'est is your to-go for any trains (Thalys, for example) leading away from city center. All of the major train hubs are easily accessible by the Metro and it was easy for us since I had already purchased a 3 day packet of tickets. Once there, we had to switch platforms to head to the trains that were heading out of city center. The signs here are littered throughout the station so it was easy to keep an eye on which platform our train was leaving from. In 1998 I did something brave. OK, maybe "brave" isn't exactly the right word, but it does accurately describe how I felt about it immediately afterward. It was in 1998 that I traveled by myself by train from Stuttgart, Germany, to Lancaster, England. For those of you unfamiliar with European geography, that's a pretty long distance. To tell that truth, it wasn't really that big a deal. I was 21 at the time, and I speak German, so I was only completely helpless, at least linguistically, in France. But France is also the only place I had to change trains. Oh, and this is long before cell phones, so my non-francophoneness could have been a major liability. Here's how it went down: I took a train from Stuttgart to Paris. On the way, I had to endure a rather annoying conversation between two fellow Americans from St. Louis that revolved around just how great Mark McGuire was. I sat next to these guys because I thought there might be safety in stupid-American numbers, but I eventually grew so tired of the conversation that I found my own car. Once I reached Paris, I got off the train at Gare de l'Est--"east station," at least as far as I understand French--I then walked a few blocks to Gare du Nord--"north station." Luckily for me, whoever designed Paris didn't think much of locating the stations named after two cardinal directions within a mile of each other. Now, I had a map of Paris with me, and I had actually visited Gare du Nord earlier during my trip, but being able to actually walk from one place to the other while carrying a pretty large bag and not speaking any French made me feel pretty good. From Gare du Nord, I jumped a train that went through the Chunnel and on to England. In London, I switched trains and eventually ended up in Lancaster. OK, so maybe not so amazing, but considering I had never traveled by myself before, its was pretty cool. I don't remember much about the station itself. Ok, so it's a train station. It's not as seedy as Gare du Nord, but it is pretty busy. As the name suggests, you can catch trains heading to eastern France. If you have time to kill, there are plenty of shops to check out and quite a few places to eat, including a Paul bakery chain and a Starbucks. There are bathrooms, but it will cost you - the price went up recently from 50 cents to a euro. Yikes - my small bladder resents that lol. read more

I really liked this train station. We used it to get to Epernay so we could go on some tasty champagne tours. I was really impressed with how clean it was; much nicer than Gare du Nord which we used to get to London and Brussels. The SNCF office was easy to use and the people were friendly, and it was easy to find the train we needed. I would prefer to take the trains out of this station a lot more. We took a train to and from Munich out of this station. We speak very little French but were able to navigate with little difficulty. When we were confused, staff persons were available to assist. Their customer service was friendly and helpful. The food was what you would expect from a train station - nothing to be excited about. For some reason, gate numbers are not known until half an hour or so before the train loads but this was not an inconvenience since there is no early loading and the assistants point you in the right area (i.e., Munich always is towards the right in higher numbers). For the most part, our trips either were on time or no more than 10 minutes delayed. The place and trains were reasonably clean given the large numbers of travelers. My only complaint is that there are few seats once you are in the waiting area. Because we arrived so early - afraid to miss our train, this was somewhat of an annoyance. read more
