Train station from outside - beautiful and modern
    Yuko H.

Beautiful and modern train station. Love the monumental arch design. It was designed by the world famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in 2009, he received many awards and later became Honorary citizen of Liege. Train station was so photogenic, I enjoyed taking pictures with my iPhone (I wish I brought my SLR with me but left it in my hotel room on that day). Liege-Guillemins station is one of the 3 Belgian stations on the high-speed rail network, with connection to Germany. Thalys and ICE high speed rail stops here. This train station connects Liege to Brussels in one hour, to Paris in 2h15, to Cologne in 1h and to Frankfurt in 2h20. It seems like long distance buses depart from this station as well, I saw many buses and bus lanes in front of the train station. This train station including platform area was so clean, and I felt safe seeing so many military? guards around on the day I visited. I sometimes get uneasy feeling from some train stations but this place wasn't the case. Perhaps wide open design and cleanliness of the train station made me feel good about walking alone. Taxi stand is right of the station exit, short walk away, and they seemed to have plenty of taxi waiting. If you go left from the station, the downtown Liege offers so many shops and restaurants. Liège is a part of the Walloon, so most people spoke French only.

Gare des Guillemins is a gorgeous train station located in Liège. This is the main station in Liège and the third largest station in Belgium. The gorgeous station was redesigned by Spanish architect and structural engineer Santiago Calatrava in 2009. There are nine tracks and five platforms. There is a Liège Tourism Office, Starbucks, and a train ticket office located at this station. This station is serviced by both high-speed trains and local trains. Your B train ticket will allow you to transfer to the local train to St. Lambert station in the city center. They where working on the locals rails the day I was in Liège. You can catch buses #1 or #4 to St. Lambert (city center.) I simply showed my B train ticket to the bus driver who gave me a pass indicating the train line was inoperative. Usually, the bus ride is €2.

Very impressive station with an interesting layout. Information offered for travellers was a bit confusing I found.
