Saint-Malo, a small coastal town in Brittany on the English channel, is a 3hr trip from Paris-Montparnasse via TGV-France's high speed train. once the base of the feared pirates (corsairs) who victimized english merchant ships in service of the king of France, the 12th century Intramuros(walled city) was heavily fortified against Norman invaders. it traces it's origins from a monastic settlement founded by followers of a gaellic monk named Mach-Low(St. Malo) who settled here in the 6th century and lived among hermits.
the gare (train station) is a 20 min. walk to intramuros but you can avail of the free shuttle bus to get to town. Saint-Malo is an ideal base for visiting the magnificent abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel and Normandy. read more
