I guess it's been reconfigured in the years since and is now more of an inclined elevator, but "Inclined Elevator de Montmartre" doesn't have the same ring to it. My older son was feeling sick the day we went to Montmartre, and the Funicular provided both entertainment and an easy way up the steep hill to Sacre Couer. It was a short, pleasant walk from the train station and was easy to get on, as it's operated by the same state-owned system as the Metro. The motion was not particularly exciting, but it was cool going up a hill in a big diagonal elevator. The ride was short, and it deposited us at the top of Montmartre, where we could use our energy to see the sights. Highly recommend if you want to skip the uphill walk, or if you or your kids might enjoy a faux funicular.

We had gone running to get to the top, then gone to mass at Sacre Couer, and just happened across the funicular walking downhill from the church. We took it down the hillside, but could see that it was far more popular going up from the crowd at the station at the bottom of the hill. This is the closest metro station to my apartment in Paris, and I have taken it every morning to go…read moreto work in La Défense. Usually on weekday mornings the trains are already pretty full by the time they get to Argentine, but a lot of people get off between Argentine and La Défense (especially at Porte Maillot) and there's reasonable standing room. Line 1 is also a mostly automated line, so the trains come very often and service is uninterrupted during transport strikes (although the trains get much more crowded). This metro station is also a very short walk from the Arc de Triomphe, so convenient if you want to visit that. There are 2 exits, each of which spits you out on either side of the multi-lane traffic of the Avenue de la Grande-Armée, so I'd pay attention to the best exit, although it's not hard to cross if you pick the wrong one. The exit "rue des Acacias" is best if you want to go in the direction of the place Saint-Ferdinand/Ternes/17th arrondissement. The station is reasonably clean, although there have been a few times where I've gotten off at the far corner of the platform and caught a whiff of urine. One time I had an issue with my Navigo and the woman working at the guichet was helpful and polite. Overall, a good station from which to access the 16th and 17th arrondissements, and the Arc de Triomphe.

The hotel is very close to 2 metro stations and a good overall Paris location. Rooms are smaller than what you might expect in the US (welcome to Paris), but really give a great local feel. Accomodations are simple, yet elegant. You really get a classic, historic feel about the building. Walk down the road to the Monoprix Supermarket, grab wine, cheese, bread, macaroons, and put them your room fridge. When you stop by the hotel in the late afternoon, you're all set for a little break. This hotel is a great place to call your temporary home in Paris whether you're on business or vacation. If you're looking to go more upscale, there is an impressive, modernist Rennaisance (Marriott) across the street; not sure what the pricing is there but certainly a bit more. The beds are decent, but not super supportive. I believe the hotel has both heat and air conditioning (some places in Europe do not hav A/C for you newbies). Breakfast is usually included in the Hotel Ceramic price (as for many Western Europe hotels)...The lady working the breakfast nook is really kind. You get a bread basket filled with croissants, pastries, nutella, butter, jam plus they have yogurt, coffee, juices. You can customer order eggs for a bit extra. There is also one gentelman working at the front counter who was very helpful in providing suggestions for restaurants, directions, etc. This hotel is quite the charmer and good overall place to crash for a week or two in Paris.

Great Way to See Most Significant Landmarks!…read more My friend and I were in Paris for only 4 days and wanted to hit all the highlights before heading out on the rest of our European vacation. We were lucky enough to stumble upon Paris Foot Walks after a few searches on the internet. Our tour guide for the day was Steven. Steven was very knowledgeable about not only the history of all the attractions, but the politics and cultural significance of each landmark. The Paris Foot Walks tour gave us a chance to get a cursory glance at what Paris had to offer. We were able to spend our remaining days spending time revisiting those landmarks we liked best instead of wasting valuable travel time trying to figure out what was interesting and what needed to be skipped. The approximately 3-hour and 4-5 mile walking tour began at the Arc de Triomphe and ended at the Louvre. It did not seem liked we walked that far as the tour was appropriately broken up with stops for coffee and bathroom breaks. Our tour guide informed us of how much it money would cost and how much time was necessary for each of the landmarks we were interested in exploring further. Definitely recommended. I am hoping to see these tours pop up in other locations.

A walking tour is certainly a commitment, but our guide was quite thoughtful, stopping frequently when he sensed we were getting tired, recommending pleasant places to sit, rest, and talk to others in the group. This is probably not an activity for elderly individuals who have difficulty getting around, or for children who will need to be carried. I think you could do the tour fairly easily with a stroller. The walk is not difficult--but you do go some distance, and you have to cross streets and navigate sidewalks with other pedestrians. My wife and I both agreed that we would take a tour with Paris Foot Walks again. My next choice would be the Wine, Beer & Conversation tour, which just looks like a great evening out in Paris!
