No slight to Jameson but if you're in Northern Ireland then you should be drinking Northern Ireland whiskey. A bit loud at 6pm on a weekday with the after work folks but a space at the bar opened up and I was able to place an order. They do have great looking food here. The portion of chicken wings looks pretty amazing and the burger was massive. It's hard to miss the brightly painted red building where it's always Guinness Time. Returned to Belfast for a holiday. I asked a local employee at a bank nearby for a good place for fish and chips. He recommended The Garrick. The Garrick has a front bar area and around the corner another entrance to a separate bar/restaurant area. We went to the back where it was quieter. All the tables were taken, but we were offered a table from three very kind men who told us to take their table and they would finish their beers at the bar are. They were very kind. We had just flown in and probably looked like tired and hungry, which we were. We had fish and chips and it was the biggest piece of fish we ever had and it was delicious. Another man spoke over and had a brief conversation with me. It's nice that a lot of their customers are so pleasant. I don't know what their other menu items taste like, but based on the atmosphere and fish and chips, I highly recommend The Garrick. Just a little pricey, but right in line with US prices. read more

This is an iconic pub that I would highly recommend that you check out. I just stopped by for about a half hour just for the experience and to have a beer. But I can imagine you can meet some very nice local people at this bar and it's not as commercialized as some of the other ones. It's a very centralized location and there's a lot of shopping in the area if that means something to you. read more

This is one of several gorgeous Victorian bars I visited in Northern Ireland on my recent trip. Service was extremely slow with the bartenders serving someone who was sitting at the bar who gestured to them about 5 minutes after I had started waiting and then apparently just not seeing me even when I was standing right of the front, which is strange given I'm 5'11 and the ratio of men to women was 9:1. Anyhoo, was very pleased with my Northern Irish cider - MacIvor's and my dad was on the Guinness. Unlike the Crown Bar, it's full of locals rather than tourists so is a better bet for peak times. read more

I thought I better update my review on The Garrick as the last one was based on a few fleeting pints I had in passing. After a recent show at the Waterfront we headed straight for Victoria's as it was closer in proximity but I kind of wish I had of walked the extra 50 meters to The Garrick straight away. When we finally did make it to The Garrick we immediately felt comfortable, although it was a Friday night we were served almost immediately by the bar staff. I get the impression that tending the bar to these guys is more of a craft than a job. They are quick, slick and definitely know their drinks. The choice of draught beer is second to none - they serve at least 12 beers (that I could count) including Dublin Porter and Hop House 13. It is split in to 2 separate areas - the front bar is traditional, rich oak and old clocks adorn the walls yet on the evening I was in the Garrick the back bar had more of a club feeling to it. Music was blasting but this may have been a Friday evening thing. There was a really nice mix of people in The Garrick when I visited, although this is essentially a City pub it has a real feel of a 'local'. read more

The Garrick isn't a bar I really went into until about a year and a half ago, and I have to say, it's pretty good. It's a very traditional looking bar - all dark mahogany and cosy little corners to sit in. I've never been for their club night, but it's meant to be pretty good (soul and funk music if memory serves). The only problem I can imagine is that it's pretty small, so it would turn into a bit of a sweat box! It's a nice place to go for a pint after shopping, or as a launch pad for a night out though. read more

This is a great little bar...on a friday night will be packed and you'd be lucky to find a seat, then again its not a very big bar...there are function rooms upstairs and there are two bars ...one at the back and one at the front, I'm not too sure what the difference is. Just like a good Irish bar should be, all wood and brass, it has a really good selection of beers and always has something new to try. I was in the Garrick for the first time last night, and I have to say I loved it, it was a lovely place to stop for a couple of drinks on a weeknight. The interior was intimate and comfortable with traditional decor. The staff were extremely friendly and the drinks (I had red wine) reasonably priced. The Garrick's the sort of bar which always slips my mind, thus I never plan to visit it other than for one drink whilst on the way elsewhere. However it's a really good bar with a proper old fashioned vibe and there's just something very interesting and appealing about it. Maybe it's the olde worlde, steeped in history feel of the place or the relaxed atmosphere or the fact that it always looks slightly different on each visit depending on the myriad of banners on display associated with the latest sports event being screened. Whatever the reason, The Garrick is visually and atmospherically fascinating. There's a good selection of wines, beers and spirits plus a solid menu of decent enough dishes with a few Vegetarian options as well. I really must plan a full, proper night out to this place soon! read more

Good bar for a few quiet pints during the day, or if you're wanting to catch a match, the back bar gets more lively in the evening, the usually have a DJ crammed into a corner of it and some people pulling some obscure moves to the weird and wonderful tracks he plays. I went for a drink here before the last secret supper event in Dina Dina, this was probably the first time in 10 years that I have been in the Garrick Bar lol I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, I ordered a glass of white wine and was pleased to see that they prep the glass with ice before pouring the wine into it.....not many bars to that these days! The surroundings are traditional and inviting, big wooden tables and guinness flags everywhere, and the best of all......free wifi :) I will definitely pop in for a wee drink again when passing mid week. read more

As Nick says, the Garrick is essentially an old man's bar in drag. But I've found myself there more and more often over the past few weeks, mainly to meet mates who have been shopping in town, called in for a bite to eat and a pint, and then refused to move any further. If you have the right crowd with you, this is a cool enough wee bar. And it's always fun to watch the tourists nearly wet themselves with excitement when the old men take out their fiddles (calm down there at the back) and start a seemingly impromptu diddly-dee session in the corner. Wow, this is so AMAZING! they will say, sipping their half pints of Guinness, while we hardened drinkers next to them get an equal buzz out of nodding sagely and not taking any notice. The Garrick are also doing one litre steins of Erdinger at the moment for Oktoberfest, something which has pleased my DingDing drinking mate very much (he calls it DingDing because as he gulps down one pint it's round two and time for another. Geddit?). I think I'll downgrade to a half litre, was the last known articulate sentence out of him last Sunday, before sliding down the seat and muttering to himself happily about large-breasted Germans. (Women Germans, from what we could hear, although we do have our doubts.) Luckily he'd left his wallet on the table so we availed ourselves of the other offer on, em, offer, JD, ginger beer and lime for three quid. Yummy. The staff in here are lovely, always up for a banter and remembering what you're drinking, although with a litre stein maybe that's not too difficult. The food is nice too, and the Bloody Mary I got on Sunday was probably the best I've had in a city centre bar. (Hi, Michael.) I wouldn't plan to go here for a night out per se, but it's not a bad spot to end up in and certainly a lot better than some of the other bars on offer around this area. Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes. I would comfortably say that this is my favourite bar in Belast. It's brilliantly situated in Chichester street. Just down the road from City Hall and just out the back of Victoria Square, its is perfectly placed for a bite to eat at lunch, a quick pint or a bit of a session and a boogie. During the week the front bar is excellent with brilliant staff, an unrivalled selection of beers and ciders and some live fiddle music on some nights which all adds to a great time. The back bar is what really makes this place stand out. It is big enough to be spacey but small enough to be cosy. Plenty of seats and booths to really let you have some good banter and chats. Friday and Saturday nights are both excellent with brilliant music played by DJs are willing to take requests and have a laugh with you. Particularly on Friday nights which I happen to think is the best night out any night and anywhere in Belfast. The drinks selection is great as is the big screen for football and the staff know what they're doing and are always friendly. Maybe try the organic ciders but be warned, they're not to be taken lightly. AFter two or three of them you may start to see into the future. read more

I popped in here to kill some time before getting a train home and it's on the way to central station. The bar is really cool and has a real authentic old style feel to it. There are rows of bottles, wooden booths and even pillars. Its really great! They offer a huge range of beers and cider for you to try from all over the world which is great as I'm a fan of my German beer. Though I copped out and got a pint of bud! I was also surprised to see they offered food and the menu was pretty big. I just went for their medium portion of spicy chicken wings and when they arrived, well, I'd hate to see their large! There was enough in there for two to share! They were beyond epic tho and I proceeded to have another pint and wait for the next train. It was a lovely bar to chill out in and there were even two people playing connect four! Certainly worth a visit! read more

I like the Garrick. It's a wee bit rough an ready sometimes when you compare it with the new hipster places like Woodworkers, but its still a great wee bar with a fantastic selection of alcohol local and craft. Definitely a sports bar so maybe avoid around times when there is a big match on if you want to avoid that sort of thing. The food is nice, plain fare but very tasty. They used to do big platters of nibbles though not sure if they still do as its a while since I ordered one. I also like how there is a front and back lounge in the bar makes it nice and big feeling. Definitly can't complain, good wee spot for an after work drink or a wee Saturday lunch spot to break up the shopping. read more

The Garrick is a great bar conveniently located in the centre of town near City Hall. It's quite an old pub, dating from 1870 and its age certainly adds to its charm. Look out for the barometers, on the wall in the back room, which are fascinating, I've been told they all work, but I think someones maybe pulling my leg! The bar has always been somewhere you can always rely on for a nice cool drink or some tasty, well priced food. Handily, they serve food later than a lot of bars in town so even when most places have stopped serving The Garrick will still have food on. A friend and I visited here a few days ago, I thought I should check it's still up to scratch, and I wasn't let down. We got two gorgeous meals; fish and chips (their number one dish!) and that days special of stuffed chicken with black pudding and green mash (tasty!) we also had two pints of lovely ice cold harp and our bill came to under £25. I was really impressed. The bar man was helpful and good craic (not just with us, with all the other patrons too) You can often catch all the live sports matches here (e.g. I used to work near here and sprinted round after work to catch the end of one the thrilling Ireland rugby matches, I JUST caught the winning try from Hayes in the match, boy that was some night!) All in all It's a consistently good bar with some lovely pub grub. If you're after a bite to eat then try their fish, it's not to miss! read more

The Garrick is one of my favourite pubs in Belfast and as a man of simple tastes its easy to see why. They offer one of the best selections of beer in Belfast and all are kept perfectly. They have a great food menu that although quite expensive for pub grub, is well worth it for the fantastic meals on offer. I usually call into the Garrick during the day/early evening and always find a relaxed, friendly atmosphere waiting for you when you arrive. They have traditional Irish music on during the week to create a fun, fibrant feel to the place and altogether is a great spot to go if you're looking for a pleasant place to relax and enjoy a pint or bottle of your favourite beer. read more

When I first moved to Belfast, a mere 7 months ago, The Garrick was one of the first city centre bars I was taken to by friends. It's a really great bar. The front lounge is snug, you could sit there and while away the evening with the right people. My housemate Sarah initiated me into Belfast by buying me a shot of green stuff (still don't know what it was) and us drinking them arms intertwined, like sailors would. How elegant! The back bar has pretty eclectic music music on, from funk, electronica DJ's to an indie disco which comes with recommendations from friends. There are also tables outside if you want to have a smoke or if it's warm enough to sit outside. I was here recently after going to the cinema in Victoria Centre and enjoyed sitting in the cosy snug all night. It also felt nice, as a female to be in a bar where you could just sit in jeans and a t-shirt on a Saturday without feeling out-glammed by ladies dressed like members of Girls Aloud. In other words, the Garrick is pretty laid back and casual. The bar is very well stocked and will impress any beer connoisseurs. A great pub, with cracking atmosphere. read more

My first introduction to the Garrick was many many years ago when we ended up in the back room at some kind've Acid Jazz club night. Not being my cup of tea musically I was initially sceptical but the unpretentious vibe and homely nature of the bar soon won me over. Been there a lot since and always been great fun though these days it's more of a quick pint or bite to eat option for me. I like the way the bar is split into the 'front' and 'back', the many different entrances so you can easily stumble into a random wedding party or a bunch of crazy hen parties. Actually one of the best nights I had there was at a stag do held on one of the smallish function rooms upstairs. Obviously it was always going to be a slightly off the wall night but fair play to the staff and management for their good humour and help throughout. The Garrick is one of those rare city centre bars that will offer you the experience you are seeking and turn it around into something even better. You've been warned. One of the top bars in Belfast (since 1870!!) and they always have a great choice of bottled and draft beers which I sampled several of over the weekend (Heverlee and Belfast Lager) while watching the football and then the rugby, one of the things I love about the Garrick is they always have football and rugby showing! The food has steadily increased in quality over the years too and their lunch specials that are served every day are brilliant and inexpensive at around £8. The specials change most weeks and they usually have great fish dishes but they always run a normal menu too from midday 'til around 8pm. The Garrick offers a lot of live entertainment too, usually traditional sessions and then on Friday and Saturday you will get a great DJ to warm you up for your night and while the bar bar is quite small, the craic is usually 90 so you don't notice too much however they do close quite early some weekends. They also offer hiring of their upstairs room for private functions, office parties and meetings. read more

Loved this little traditional pub. This review is only of their craft beer selection which an article we read online clued us in about. They have roughly 50 bottles of craft beer, nearly 20 of which are local and/or from Ireland. The selection is great and bartender knowledge of them is pretty good. The atmosphere was nice as we listened to a fiddle player, flutist, and guitarist play some tunes. We even got free wings and sausage pieces to nibble on.
