If you are coming from the north on 279, you round a corner and then bam, there it is, the skyline. Additionally, you can get amazing views from up on Mt. Washington. When I have out of town visitors, they often ask about a rooftop restaurant and I say you don't need one, you just need to go to one of the ones in Mt. Washington. There is a nice variety of modern vs historic and the signature bridge color and style complements it well. One of the great things about Pittsburgh's skyline is the variety of options you have to view it. You can be ground level at Station Square or on the North Side. The best view, though, is from Mt. Washington. Definitely take the time to view it during the day, at night and in different seasons for different perspectives.

If you get drunk in Pittsburgh, and then need a bathroom, you may have trouble finding one, hence the nickname "P*ssburgh", but what some people that don't know P***burgh very well don't know, is that this city has one of the most beautiful skylines in the world. Still one of the most beautiful skylines in the whole world. You got to see a little of it during the recent "Grudge Match" boxing movie, but it's still so unheralded and unappreciated compared to other, often inferior, skylines. Los Angeles is amazing with the mountain behind it (from a distance), whereas San Francisco and its bridges is incomparable, and Rainier as a backdrop to Seattle is incredible. Don't forget Philly, Houston, Dallas, the spectacular lakeside Chicago, and the blue tropical-scape of Miami. While New York City probably wins, I'd actually put Pittsburgh at the top of the list for the runner up spot. The best place to view the skyline (and there are many, many options) is Grandview Avenue, which is also listed and reviewed on Yelp. The viewing platforms up there are incredible. Another great view is on your way through the tunnel from the West... it's a low trajectory view, but it's breathtaking. I love heading into Pitt on the interstate from the North (I-279 I believe), and seeing it unfolding behind the gorgeous mountains. So indeed. It's one of the most incredible skylines in the country, and one which always takes my breath away and has ever since I first saw it a long time ago when I came to Pittsburgh to play a concert, so many years back, but it meant a lot to me, and the City of Pittsburgh totally changed my life for sure. I certainly think it's one of the most underrated skylines in the history of skylines. No matter what angle you see it from - especially if you're coming over a hill and then you see it - it just takes your breath away. Especially considering there is really nothing in the way of cities for hundreds of miles, in at least 80% of the directions from Pittsburgh. If you head Ohio way it's a little bit different, but still it's just amazing of here. One of the most amazing parts of the country that's for sure. If anyone ever tells you Pittsburgh isn't beautiful and spectacular, they don't know what they're talking about. Even if a lot of the guys here have an attitude, hence the nickname "Pr**ksburgh."

We got to briefly chat with him and he was so down-to-earth. He and his friend came in from Cali to do the job and it was done in just a couple of weeks. His talent is immense and the homage he paid to his friend, Mac is felt in every inch of the mural. I took a bunch of pics but I'm sharing only one as it was the best shot I got. When you see this mural, you don't feel like this kid is gone. Maybe just off on an adventure never to be seen again. Or maybe he's hiding behind the counter at Frick Park Market. Gone too soon but cherished by his hometown, always. If you're in Pittsburgh, head over to neighboring Etna to soak in this piece of history.

Although some also say it is from the strip mills that were once in the area. Regardless of how it got its name, it is a wonderful place that anyone spending time in Pittsburgh should visit! There are restaurants of every variety. Polish, Vietnamese, seafood, Italian and the original Primanti Brothers location! There is a winery, butcher shop, places to buy kitchen items, a spice store, tons of Pittsburgh themed sports and souvenir shops. Candy stores, Pittsburgh popcorn. Maybe the most known entity is Wholey's Market with their amazing selection of fresh seafood. The strip is always busy during the day, especially on Saturday and Sunday. It is a little less crazy in the evenings because a lot of the retail stores are only open until 5, but there are still plenty of great spots to grab a bite. It is easily walkable and there are a wide variety of parking options (a municipal garage near one end, surface lots, metered spots and some businesses (like Wholey's) have their own lots. What is great is that anyone can enjoy the Strip District. You can enjoy time with your family, wander on your own, have a girls day our or have a date day. So many fun things to choose from. Definitely one of the top Pittsburgh "things to do"

Sculptures of several people walk up a 100 foot tall steel pole, while additional figures are situated at the base, looking up at the others. It was designed by Jonathan Borofsky and is one of two copies. We really enjoyed checking out this piece!

One of the great things about art is that the message it is conveying can be absolutely timeless…read moreand relevant, even almost 100 years after it was initially completed. The murals, lovingly painted by Maxo Vanka were completed in a surprisingly short time period. Basically every wall and space in this church is covered with art packed with meaning. Even in scenes that were straight out the Bible, Vanka packed a social justice and workers rights message into them. The one that stood out most to me was a gorgeous one behind the altar called "Mary, Queen of Croatia" Mary is often depicted as somewhat meek or even small, and this depiction is is strong, muscular and clearly showing confidence. It was just striking and I connected with it because I've always viewed Mary in that way (a strong, bad a**). I took a tour which was extremely informative and provided a great mix of the history and the art. Speaking with the tour guide, she stated that while the basic information is the same on every tour, each guide provides their own unique spin on what they focus on. I definitely recommend a guided tour, but even just visiting and taking them all in on your own is worth it.

I have been lucky enough to gonna tour a few different times to see the church and murals at different times per year. Christmas is the best time to see them. The church is so beautifully decorated that time of year. The guides do such a wonderful job of telling the story of Maxo Vanka, how he got to the US, and what they represent to his culture and people. He did such a great job of telling the story of Croatian history, its ups and downs and how strong their people were in getting through it all. The preservation society does an amazing job of working with art restorers to keep these murals alive and so vibrant. I also love the lights they put on them to further highlight them. Do yourself a favor and check these murals are. We're so lucky to have these works of art here in Pittsburgh.

This house had an essence of sterility, which felt like a 180-degree flip from the feel and warm quirk of La Hutte. The artist who envisioned this house was equally creative but sourced from his own interpretation of what the history of the Kunz family may have looked like -- plus a house that incorporates their white sterility if a lab on floor one, the dusty electronic secrets of a basement where hobbies bring to life illegal radio transmissions, to the second floor with a sense of destruction through fire, to the attic that feels like creating alters with pieces of history including the artist's sample of blood and his wife's lock of Bottom line: This house isn't as rich aesthetically but is rich in its story -- fictional or otherwise. Creative, functional, and ingenious. Yet another reason to be proud of my beloved city. It's also listed on Atlas Obscura. Important to note that it may not always be in place because of theft and vandalism. It's been replaced several times over the years. I've seen it when only the roof was left or a piece of it. Still worth trying to see it if you're exploring our Steel City. It's located within the PPG Plaza area where Blvd of Allies & Stanwix meet.

Pittsburgh is so full of quirky gems and it is fun learning about their stories. The first time I saw this, I did a double take. "Is that Snoopy's house?" and "if it is, why the heck is it there?!" I asked my husband who had no idea so I googled and learned that they were looking for a creative way to cover some utilities and this was their solution. There was a brief period where the house wasn't there, but they were rebuilding/refurbishing it. This isn't something you go out of your way to see, but it is definitely fun to point out to others. And how can you help but smile when you see a random Snoopy house downtown.
