Finding an OB/GYN doctor and team for pregnancy and delivery is definitely like finding a long-term partner; they're going to be there for some of the most monumental moments in your life and you want to make sure they not only put you first, but also share similar values and priorities. Naturally that means you "date" a number of different providers to make sure you find "the one". Meeting Dr. Hoff for the first time put me immediately at ease. He's funny, makes nerdy references, and is extremely knowledgeable. I appreciated how he made time to thoroughly answer all of my questions, and always used research and data to support his answers. He also delivers about 90-95% of his own patients, and delivers at Sequoia Hospital - both aspects that were very important to me. We knew immediately that we wanted Dr. Hoff to help us through our first pregnancy. And then we met his Nurse Practitioner Kacee. If we loved Dr. Hoff already, Kacee solidified my love for their team and practice. She is full of warmth and reassurance (especially when you've visited the office for the Nth time for another scare), and you really just want to be best friends with her because she's amazing. Their team (the receptionists and the techs) are all wonderful as well. I love that you are treated with respect and kindness, and you feel like you matter to them as a person (not just a patient chart that comes in and out). They remember who I am and my name, and sometimes when I randomly pop in to schedule another visit since I'm already in the neighborhood, I'm greeted by name before they even look up my file. Aside from the team being wonderful human beings, I truly believe I received the most excellent care. We had a few scares, and every time they encouraged me to come in with a better safe than sorry approach, and when it (every time) turned out to be fine, they continued to reassure me that it's better that I came in and they want me to always feel safe and comfortable to visit any time. I do feel awful doing so sometimes because I know they squeeze me in between their already super packed day, but it's another testament to how much they do care about their patients. The entire pregnancy was made smooth because of Dr. Hoff and his incredible team. They helped answer all our questions and assuage all our concerns. I appreciate how they are open-minded, present all the necessary and requested information and will support your choices, whatever you decide. The delivery was a smooth one, and a very enjoyable one if that's even possible! Husband and I were laughing as Dr. Hoff made his usual silly jokes (womb with a view!). We wanted my husband to cut the umbilical cord, and Dr. Hoff even paused the moment and said "wait, the baby's not in the video, let's fix that". It's a small thing, but made a world of a difference to us first time parents, and it meant so much that Dr. Hoff knew how these little gestures go a long way for his patients. We're looking forward to having a few more little ones to add to the pack, and for sure will stay with Dr. Hoff and his team for as long as they'll have us. Great bedside manner and very friendly. Probably a perfect doctor if you have no issues, BUT if you anticipate complications or are having any, go somewhere else. He blew off my specific concerns repeatedly ("being miserable is part of pregnancy!") and missed a highly prevalent pregnancy issue as a result. We miscarried and I had to go to another doctor for diagnosis after the miscarriage since the symptoms were so intense. I am probably going to have to have my gallbladder removed with surgery and it could have killed me in the meantime. I asked him to run the tests for what I had been diagnosed with for a second opinion since he was my doctor through the issues and again he blew me off... I wasn't even surprised. I asked him in good faith to give him the opportunity to fix the mistake and instead had to ask for my record and move on. Seriously? Also worth noting that he did not explain any risks to me before a surgery for the miscarriage (including, importantly, INFERTILITY from scarring) or even what the surgery itself consisted of (filling uterus with air, scraping my organs out and having a catheter) I had no idea what was involved when I showed up for surgery. read more

If you are seeking an OBGYN for routine checkups or for a pregnancy I'd recommend you look no further. I've had nothing but good experience with Dr Gary Hoff during my pregnancy, delivery and postnatal follow up visits. I did have a few minor complications throughout the pregnancy (including a breech presentation which dr hoff was able to successfully invert), and felt that we wouldn't have ended up with such a healthy outcome for mom and baby without dr hoffs expertise. We selected dr. Hoff based on reviews on here, specifically based on women recommending him for his surgical skills (if you end up having to go the c-section route or require stitches - which I did require some stitches, and you want someone with skill to administer those, trust me!) in addition to general OB knowledge/skill. Dr. Hoff is definitely the best of the best! I was on a mission to find the BEST OB in town and I am SO glad that I did! I was very unhappy with my last OB (I won't mention any names), so I made the switch to Dr. Gary Hoff in Redwood City! And believe me, I am SOOO happy that I did! I also made sure to get a few references just to be sure, so I asked around at my primary care office and all of the ladies knew him and thought he was an excellent OB and very nice one as well. Then, I decided to check yelp just to see if he was on here and sure enough, he was!! And yet again, yelp did not disappoint, they always come through :). So, I was very excited yet a little nervous to see him last week, but he immediately reassured me and explained everything he was about to do during my procedure, so my whole experience turned out to be one of the best OB experiences I have ever had, especially for the procedure i had done (which was not a very easy one, but it was painless). I was very impressed! Everyone was so right about him. And now, I no longer dread seeing my OB. I also forgot to mention that within my first visit with Dr. Hoff, he did the procedure that I had been trying to get my last OB to do for over a year now. Dr. Hoff definitely listens to his patients and sits down to really talk to them. He is very knowledgeable and gives great advice. I was also really surprised that he knew every little detail from my on-line chart by memory! I always waited in the exam room for at least 45 minutes when I saw Dr. Hoff. I saw him for an ovarian cyst, and was about to undergo surgery to have it removed when, during my final consult, he purported to try to feel the change in size for a 3 centimeter cyst manually, which was both invasive and futile - most any doctor will tell you you can't really feel irregularities in ovaries at all, much less such small ones. It made me nervous and I decided to talk to another doctor. When I got a second opinion, I found out that bith control pills often shrink cysts - Dr. Hoff had told me months before that birth control could make my cyst BIGGER. So there could have been a nonsurgical solution that fixed my problem literally six months ago. He also completely missed a SECOND cyst next to the first one despite doing FOUR sonograms of the ovary. I strongly suggest you avoid this guy like the plague. I can't imagine what would have happened if I had let him cut into me. read more

I credit Gary Hoff almost entirely with making the birth of my second child a great experience. For my first child, I delivered at Lucille Packard. For the second, I took a recommendation from a friend and went with Dr. Hoff, and knew immediately that it was the right decision. He had my husband and I laughing through my delivery (I kid you not). Always personable, great bedside manner, and never ever felt rushed. He really took the time to answer my questions in a relatable manner, and I didn't feel like "just a number." And, shocker, he delivered my kid! I would have had a c section would it not be for the brave nurses at Sequoia hospital arguing for me to be able to deliver my baby naturally. I gave two stars only because dr Hoff miraculously disregarded his god complex and let me. My boy was born 20 min after pushing. Comments such as "so much for that night sleep" and bragging about giving a woman a natural birth when he in fact argued against is was to say the least appalling. I chose this doctor based on his 5 star review on yelp. Be ware of negative reviews on doctors pages "disappearing". Angie's list is another site that might be better for such an important choice in this highly c section obsessed career. read more

Dr. Hoff is my OBGYN and my mom's as well. He is taking care of me as I expect my first child. He is patient, cheerful, always in a positive, caring mood, always returns my emails, never acts like I have too many questions and is the best surgeon out there according to what ppl at the hospital has told me. At Sequoia, he tends to be the doctor that has less inductions, C-Sections, etc. He works with a doula. He has delivered over 4,000 babies and has over 27 years of experience. He delivers all of his own babies so you don't have to worry about seeing another doctor when you go into labor. This review is long overdue for Dr. Gary Hoff. Dr Hoff is kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, open minded and everything you want in a doctor who will deliver your baby. As we are older and first time parents, we had many concerns with this pregnancy due to several personal challenges. My wife was sick almost the entire pregnancy from about 6 weeks to the 9 month marker, Dr. Hoff encouraged us throughout the pregnancy that everything would be just fine at the end. Every visit he never rushed us and he always spent a lot of time helping us with our questions and test that need to be done. He was also very open with the options for a C-section if a vaginal the delivery would be too long for my wife. I was concerned that since my wife was sick and so tired with this pregnancy that she would have no energy to push the baby so we decide to go with c-section however Dr. Hoff suggest for us to try to push for an hour and if nothing progress he will do the c-section. We are glad that I listened to him because giving birth vaginally made the recovery time much shorter than c-section. At the end we never knew that my wife would have strength to push our baby out. The office staff are also super nice from the front desk to the nurse practitioners; Kacee and Jenell are fantastic. They are easy to keep in touch with. We gave birth to our baby girl at Sequoia Hospital in which I'm so happy with. The birthing center there is super nice and the nurses that helped Dr. Hoff delivery our baby is so wonderful. They kept encouraging my wife to push and taught her how to push correctly. The whole process made us appreciated the doctor and the nurses at birthing center so much because they are really passionate about the baby and the mother. We can not imagine someone else helping us give birth with our baby except him. Dr. Hoff rocks! read more

I have referred several patients and friends to Dr Gary Hoff and he is a slam dunk every time. He has true respect for women's bodies and women's reproductive health issues. Dr Hoff makes his patients feel listened to and valued, plus he is funny! Our baby girl pulled a fast one on us and did 180 at 38.5 weeks and presented completely breeched. Long story short, best baby doctor out there! We live in Santa Clara and drove up to Redwood City to see Dr. Hoff after reading his great reviews. Let me tell you, he is definitely worth the drive! Not only is he a superb doctor, but he actually cares about his patients, not their wallets. He delivered our first baby, and throughout the whole experience, there was not one time where I felt like we were being rushed or pushed into an unnecessary procedure. In Dr. Hoff's case, the fact that we never felt rushed is really quite impressive, because he is very busy, with many clients. We often had to wait 10-20 minutes to see him because he was running behind, but it was totally worth it, because once you are with him, he will stay with you and answer all your questions and address all your concerns very patiently, without worrying about the next appointment. The last thing I'd like to say is that he delivered our baby by Caesarean and my wife was amazed that she felt absolutely NO pain after the procedure. In fact, she was out of bed the day of the delivery, and skipped taking all the painkillers afterwards. He's THAT good- not only a caring doctor but also top-notch. I found Dr. Hoff through Yelp, so to pass along the favor I signed up for an account so I could add my review. Dr. Hoff delivered my beautiful baby boy last week. From start to finish I have had nothing but good experiences with his entire practice. On the first OB appointment I met with both him and his nurse practitioner, then alternated seeing each of them until the end of the pregnancy when I saw Dr. Hoff exclusively. He has a gregarious manner which I find relaxing. He is knowledgeable and took the time to answer all my questions, even when busy. I never felt rushed or coerced into doing anything I didn't want to do. I know some women prefer female OBGYNs and I wasn't sure if I'd feel uncomfortable with a male, but I never did. He is open and easy to talk to about anything and very professional. He and his staff have always been responsive when I've called with questions. They've followed through with all communications so I've never been left hanging when it comes to test results or questions about symptoms I was having. I suffered morning sickness for the entirety of both my pregnancies and felt like he took my complaints seriously and treated them accordingly so that I could function. As I got closer to my due date and decisions needed to be made about stripping membranes, induction etc. he offered his thoughts then left decisions open to me. Once I made a decision about my treatment I always felt like he respected that. In the delivery room he was responsive when my epidural wasn't working properly and hunted down the anesthesiologist to come back and fix it. 5 stars for that! The hospital nurses all seemed to really enjoy working with him as well and made positive comments about him, which gives me even more confidence in him. My baby was delivered at 2:30am but Dr. Hoff's manner was no different than if it had been the middle of the day. I'm sure he would have rather been sleeping. Dr. Hoff's current nurse practitioner, Jessica Beckenmeyer, is equally capable. I met with her a week after delivery to discuss some lingering issues that were bothering me. She took a lot of time with me, gave me detailed explanations of what she thought was causing my symptoms, and followed up in a timely manner with my test results. She seems top notch! My 3 year old daughter attended all my appointments with me and the entire staff was very accommodating. They seem to really like kids, which is a plus for a practice that brings them into the world. Scheduling appointments has always been easy and my wait to see the Dr/NP was never unreasonable. Occasionally I had to wait, but that's to be expected for an OB who has to rush to the hospital to delivery babies whenever they're ready to come. I can't recommend this practice highly enough. If there's a baby #3 in my future, I will definitely be going back. read more

*** disclaimer*** This is a bit long! My husband and I recently moved back to the Bay Area after nearly 7 years away. Not more than a couple of months after, I discovered I was pregnant. Of course, my original obgyn's office permanently closed and I hadn't established myself with even a primary yet. I did remember that Dr. Hoff was highly regarded and Sequoia hospital was supposed to be a wonderful place to give birth. I confirmed with current reviews and attempted to make my appointment. To my surprise, they were able to get me in to see both him and nurse practitioner Jessica Obermeyer in two days time. In Portland it took me two months to see the gynecologist that I wanted so I was very pleased. I had been having some mild, but concerning symptoms around my appointment time (I write this 6 days post initial appt dealing with a miscarriage). I was put completely at ease by his entire medical staff. The appointment was long, thorough, informative and completely comfortable. When Dr Hoff came in he instilled so much confidence in us. As other reviewers point out, he is compassionate, direct, and open. I have never felt so un-rushed by any specialist I have seen. After the ultrasound, he concluded that the pregnancy may not be viable (low fetal heart rate). While he was very clear about what the odds were, he also told us he hasn't given up hope on this little baby. That appointment was last Friday and the beginning of the long weekend brought worsening symptom for me. As one could imagine, it was terrifying to know that you could be in the early stages of miscarriage, especially while the doctor's office was closed. On Sunday I received a call from a number I didn't know and it was DR Hoff calling to check in on me! What a relief! Just knowing that he was concerned for my well being enough to call made me feel truly cared for in a way that is not common in today's medical community. By Tuesday night came, I started having pain, but nothing severe enough to send me to the ER. I communicated with the PA via email and had a phone call from her that night. This morning I was contacted by the other Obgyn in the office to discuss the symptoms. It was Dr Hoff's surgical day so I would have to wait until the following day to confirm miscarriage. Fifteen minutes after that call, I received another from the office saying the He was coming in especially to see me if I could make it to the office! I can't tell you how much that gesture means during a crisis like this. As frustrating and saddening as the miscarriage confirmation was, Dr Hoff was able to put both of our minds at ease a little bit. He was unhurried and very kind. He was able to accommodate my schedule to have the d&c preformed later in the evening at the end of the week. In short, I would and will completely recommend him to all of my friends and family who are looking. He is a true gem of a doctor! read more

I originally was planning on delivering at Stanford hospital and decided to opt for Sequoia for a number of reasons. My original doctor was with PAMF Palo Alto and I had a number of appointments with her and none of them were longer than 5 minutes before she had to rush off to see another patient. Needless to say, a horrible experience for a first time pregnancy where I just had so many questions. My first appointment with Dr Hoff was amazing and I knew he was going to be our doctor moving forward. He spent over an hour with me during our first visit, which is unheard of! He told me he had all the time that I needed to ask any questions so I could feel comfortable about the pregnancy. I loved the fact that he and all the doctors there are committed to delivering their own patients babies so that we have the comfort of knowing that the doctor that you spent the last 9 months with will be there when the time comes, which is fantastic! Dr. Hoff is exceptional! He is a kind-hearted man who is an excellent physician, and even better listener. After losing confidence in the direction of my prenatal care & birth plan with our first OB, my husband and I transferred our care to Dr. Hoff - at 41 weeks pregnant! Not only did he agree to take me as a patient, but he really listened to our hopes for our baby's birth and advised us in a balanced way, weighing our desires and what our baby needed. I ended up being induced (for the baby's health) but laboring naturally with out pain medication (by my wishes). Dr. Hoff was an amazing coach during a long pushing session (my baby was presenting with his hand attached to his head) and sensitive, quick, and skillful when putting me all back together. He came by the next morning to check on the baby and me and even gave me a choice on my discharge time & date. He made follow-up calls to check on how I was doing and gave me some great advice for getting back on my feet. I waited a long time for my first appointment, he's a very popular doctor. I'm glad I waited, it was well worth it! Dr. Hoff diagnosed an issue that my other doctor didn't, he took a detailed medical history and took the time to answer all my many questions. He was very thorough and has a great personality. I'd never been to a male OB/GYN but it was no big deal. Now I'm pregnant and we're heading back to our home state and I'm so disappointed he won't be our doctor. As others have said, you should plan on waiting a while for your appointment. I called ahead and came in a little later per the staff's suggestion and we still waited a while for the appointment. The quality of service makes up for any time you wait, I've been to so many doctors that rush you out of their offices, I'd rather wait a little longer for a great doctor and a comprehensive appointment.
