My former spouse saw Dr. Toig when we were expecting our first child in 2008. At that time Dr.Toig began prescribing her oxycontin during her pregnancy. After her pregnancy she eventually entered an inpatient addiction treatment program, where the MD stated that the ramp of opiates Dr. Toig had prescribed would have created an addiction in anyone and it was as if it was intentional. I then discovered a friend of mine had also seen Dr. Toig, and I will relay the facts of her encounter. Dr. Toig had performed a surgery to improve her fertility but erroneously left gauze inside of her, unfortunately rendering her infertile. Dr. Toig's office promised to somehow make this right, but was slow to act until they ceased corresponding entirely. My friend and her husband then decided to pursue a malpractice suit but legal counsel advised them that the statute of limitations had passed, coincident with when Dr. Toig's office stopped corresponding. I'm giving a 1-star review because my experiences were about as bad as can be. read more

I saw Dr. Toig when I lived in Redwood City. He was my OB & general practitioner. I found him to be efficient, quite entertaining with his humorous attitude, and I was completely comfortable with him. I saw him twice, and both visits I left satisfied. I do recall having a difficult time cancelling an appointment, but other than that, I found everyone pleasant at his office, including his nurse or medical assistant. read more

Words can not explain how awful this Dr is, he still angers me with his unprofessional attitude. I went to him several times within one month for what I thought was a painful bladder infection. He was nice at first but after many failed attempts to heal me he grew angry. He literally yelled at me "you don't have anything wrong with you!" Well Dr.Toig, I do have something it's called Interstitial Cystitis . No one should be treated like that. I met Dr. Toig in the ER when I was 24 and needed an emergency hysterectomy. I'm 65 and still with him. Best diagnostician around. He is caring, empathetic, funny and warm. He has seen me at my worst and at my best. I highly recommend him. He knows his craft very well! Also a shout out to Veronica who has been by his side for as long as I can remember. If you want a Doctor who is caring, efficient, empathetic, and brutally honest (transparent)- Dr. Toig is your guy! I've been seeing Dr. Toig for over 19 years and he is nothing short of amazing! If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have my son today. I am beyond grateful for him and the knowledge he brings. He is always one step ahead and is consistent. I love that he takes his time and doesn't rush you as a patient. He treats you as a person and not a number. Even during these crazy times he has managed to be there via Telehealth visits and they have been equally great. He is one of the few doctors who still continues to provide the white glove service patients continue to look for. I don't often write reviews, but feel this has to be stated. I went to Dr. Toig upon recommendation by one of his clients and a close friend. I was dealing with painful joints when I'd get up in the morning and was told by a couple friends that it could be a symptom of menopause. Upon arrival I completed the paper work. Dr. Toig ran through it so quickly he transposed medical histories of my mother and father. It was very obvious he didn't care. Then he said, "You look good, does your significant other ever complain that you kick him?, I'm gonna say you have restless leg." I thought he was joking, but that was it. No tests were run, and I spent more time filling out the paperwork than in my visit. I left shaking my head at the absurdity of it all. I really could not get over the lack of professionalism, bordering on offensiveness. Thankfully I found doctor not long after who was willing to listen, run tests, diagnose and treat. And as if my experience w. Dr. Toig was not bad enough, 2 months after my visit, I started getting robocalls from his office stating that my payment was "past due." Only after the calls did I receive a bill in the mail. There was no explanation whatsoever and it stated that the rest had been submitted to my insurance. I've left a message on their voicemail for an explanation or record. No one has returned my call. I do however keep getting their robocalls and text reminders for payment. Yes, the wait can be frustrating, but the truth of the matter is that he never rushes you either. He is one of the rare breed of doctors who still listen to what the patient is saying - whether they can put it into words or not. He's excellent at asking the right questions to zero in on whatever the problem might be. After several years of being frustrated with the wait time, I realized I wasn't going to go to another doctor, and he wasn't going to change his office routine. So I now just schedule in the extra wait time, or if I'm in a hurry that day will call in to check how far behind schedule he is and see if I need to reschedule. Dr Toig is also does General Practice and lately I've started to take my teenage son and daughter to him as they became too old/big for the pediatrician. So basically this is a one stop shop for all my family health needs. I wouldn't actually put up with this from anyone else, but he's pretty damn good at what he does - so bring a book, play with your iphone or meditate. read more

I just went to Dr Toig's clinic this morning, and i am very pleased about the whole experience. The staff is nice and friendly. The appointment was on time. Dr Toig is very interested in his patients questions, he spent more time than i was expecting, to address my questions and made sure i am convinced. He is quite thorough in his treatment, he does not look like to me ,as one of those 'fill-out-the-template' type of doctor, who mostly looks at computer screen and spent most of time in writing patients answers to predefined question. He was with me understanding my symptoms and giving suggestion/options/medications. I am living in this country for about 11 years, by far he was the best of all. read more

I saw Dr. Toig for many years. As the years went on, the wait time was getting longer and longer -- an hour or more, usually. The last time I saw him, I waited MORE THAN 3 HOURS just for a routine checkup. I changed to another OB/GYN after that, and have been very happy. FYI, I was told recently that Dr. Toig no longer has privileges at Sequoia Hospital. I was told this by another doctor in the course of casual conversation. I, too, have been going to Dr Toig for 10+ years. Not anymore. I have no children, and do not plan on having any. I go to Dr. Toig only for my annual exams. I have been kept waiting in excess of 90 minutes every time. He has gotten progressively worse in the last 3 years. Now I understand emergencies happen, but the staff needs to alert the patients to that. Every year I call before I go to see about any delays. Last year I had a 4pm appt, called, was told to show at 5pm, and at 6pm I left without ever seeing the Dr. I find this rude & unacceptable as my time is valuable also. Dr. Toig really is awesome. I've never had a male OB-GYN before and prior to him, I have never wanted a male just because of how uncomfortable I thought I would feel. Dr. Toig was great. He was very friendly, very informative and definitely took as much time as I needed to make sure I understood everything that was going on with me. He took the time to understand my background and history and made me feel at ease. His office staff is amazing! They are all so kind, friendly and helpful. Even before I showed up for my first visit, they were very patient with me on the phone to schedule my appointment and make sure my records from the previous doc had transferred over. Dr. Toig has been my Dr. for 16 years. I love him dearly. He's by far the best Dr. I've ever come across. Truely compassionate and the best at what he does. You'll read reviews from patients complaining about the wait time. Yes, you have to wait for Dr. Toig longer than for other doctors. Yes, sometimes you'll wait a whole hour. BUT! The reason you wait for him for so long is because he will take all the time needed with his patients, and some patients need more time than others. He won't only treat you for whatever you came in for that day but he'll inquire about your life because he cares about his patients more than any other doctor I've ever met. And after you waited for him and he's in the room with you - you get his full attention and such personal treatment you won't get anywhere else. He's great, very knowledgeable, thinks outside the box, very personable, and cares to the extent of calling to check on you on a weekend or holidays, if needed. So my advise - bring a book. You get 30 minutes to 1 hour of quiet time with your book - that's the only 'bad' thing about Dr. Toig's practice. read more

Dr. Toig is an excellent doctor. I've gone to him for many years as both my OBGYN and my general appointments. In the past there have been long waits to see him which are frustrating. Since he's moved to his new office my most recent 3 appointments have been on time. One thing I really appreciate about Dr. Toig is that he does not rush me during my appointments, he answers all my questions, and I feel like he really cares about my overall health (physical & mental). I had an extremely difficult time getting pregnant and even harder time trying to keep my baby in the womb for as long as possible. Dr. Toig could tell right away (within the first couple months) that my little girl was going to come early. He made sure I came in for appointments often to make sure nothing got past him... he recommended different specialists to also oversee my progress. Even with all the support, specialists, and medical procedures my little girl arrived 3 months early. Without his oversight and recommendations I would not have had my baby born alive or healthy. She is now 10 months old and the love of mine & my husbands lives. I would recommend Dr. Toig to anyone! His staff are always friendly and helpful. I'm a first time patient and went there in April for an eye health check up. In my experiences, the wait at any doctor's office is always soOOOOOOO long. This place is no different: I was seen by the doctor for about 25-30 min, but was there for 2 hours (remaining time was spent waiting) The waiting area is standard - cookie cutter doctor's waiting room. The receptionist explained my insurance coverage and was able to answer my questions. The 30 min with Dr. Toig, though short, was of GREAT QUALITY! Being a first time patient, he asked extensive questions about my medical history, and inquired about my family and relationships. I felt he really cared about my health and how to keep it in good condition. Plan to go there again. There's free parking, but I wasn't told this until after I got there (ask where to park over the phone). read more

Dr Toig, Is our family physican as well as my ob Dr. I would never go anywhere else I drive from southbay all the way to redwood City just to see him. He is a calming presence, and is super knowledgeable. I cant say enough nice things. He has been my Primary care and MY HUSBANDS TOO! He was also my OB dr as well. I also recieved fertility treatments. He treats all of my concerns with care. The girls in the office are awesome! I cant ever imagine switching. We have been seeing him for the last 7 years. I rave about him and mention him to friends the one down side is he does have a wait in his office but seeing him is worth it. read more

I recently visited Dr. Toig the other day for a routine check up. There was no wait time for a check up and the office staff was very nice. When I met Dr.Toig he was very thorough in asking questions about my families health history and in getting to know me, which I appreciated. He made me feel extremely comfortable. After my check up was complete I felt like I had talked to a friend or mentor that I had known for years. He is a very warm, smart, compassionate and professional doctor, which isn't so common and especially appreciated for a OB/GYN. He also recommended another doctor in the area for something else, which was very helpful and also let me know that he would be flexible to see me during my busy work weeks. I got a message from the Toig office telling me that my previous review (3 stars) was hurting their business and asking me to change my review..... :/ Lets talk about this seriously. I'm no longer with Toig, because I found him to be a generally inattentive doctor. He's not a great listener and has a tendency to throw medications at you, not because your conditions demand these medications, but because he insists most of his patient suffer from Disease A so chances are, it's Disease A. He repeatedly tried to get me to take allergy medication for vertigo eventhough I had NO history of allergies..... rinse, repeat. It's hard to justify going back with the long wait times and the lack of personalized care. read more

My Wife has been seeing Dr Toig for over 10 years now. I read some of these negative reviews and honestly wasn't happy about the wait times too. I own a business and know customers do not like waiting especially when they have an appointment. This isn't your typical business. You cannot forecast medical issues, births & emergencies. When my wife needs to see Dr Toig they don't say no. I'm sure Dr Toig doesn't like making people wait like that but, he's a doctor and puts his patients first. He not making you wait because he's at lunch or golfing. I will say when you do see him he makes you feel very important and gives you the attention you need. He really cares. Thanks to the help of Dr Toig's fertility knowledge we have 2 beautiful children. Recently our company insurance was changing all employees to Kaiser. Dr. Toig delivered my soon to be 22-year-old baby so I have been a patient for a long time. The best thing about Dr. Toig is not only is he the best OB-GYN but he effectively treated me over the years for everything so I didn't need a second doctor. I loved this because Dr. Toig knows you. He keeps up with what you and your family is doing. I just can't say how much I love this Dr. and his staff is excellent. Only con is the wait time. But that is because he spends a very long time with each patient so when it is your turn, you are the focus for as long as you need to be. Unfortunately with all the building going on it has made getting to Redwood City just too difficult so I am very sad that I had to find a doctor in Burlingame where I work and live. If I ever move to Redwood City I'll absolutely go back to Dr. Toig. read more

I've been going to Dr. Toig for ten years and recently had my first child. For the first nine years, I'd visit at least once a year and would patiently wait in the waiting room for my turn. I just assumed that the wait was the same for all OB's. It wasn't until I decided to have a child that I realized he is just that good! I felt well taken care of before, during, and after my pregnancy. If something didn't seem right they would squeeze me in immediately. The staff is super fun and responsible and it's been great getting to know everyone in the practice. Dr. Toig takes the time to answer my questions, offers advice, and is always looking out for my best interest. My delivery was at Sequoia hospital and he assured me he would be there despite his summer vacation plans. I was three weeks early and on my delivery day I was worry free. I saw him in the morning and he made me feel confident that things were fine. I should plan on delivering in the early evening and tell my husband to fly home. When the time came, Dr. Toig was efficient. I felt totally secure that any action plan we took would be the right one. In my opinion, my delivery was smooth and without complications but, had there been any I couldn't tell since Dr. Toig had it covered. So, will I keep driving from San Francisco to see Dr. Toig and the clan . . . absolutely . . . it's worth the wait! read more

I have been going to this doctor since i was a teen (over 10 years now). While I appreciate his intentions and his years of experience I cant help but think he is very out of touch with younger women. I find him condescending, dismissive, and he expresses a strong parental attitude not appropriate for someone my age. The wait times have always been atrocious only seem to get worse. Waiting 2 or more hours in not uncommon. He just has way too many patients. When i changed insurance I was forced to pick another doctor and I couldn't believe the difference. My new doctor actually discussed my health issues with me like a normal person instead of lecturing me and diagnosing me before i even have a chance to speak. read more

i have been going to Dr Toig for over 20 years yes you have to wait sometimes but when its your turn he does not rush you like some doctors would. He is an excellent doctor always concerned about your well being. He makes sure you do everything right on one visit he even called my pharmacy to make sure my precription was right. I had such a great experience with Dr Toig. And it was such a relief because I was having an emergency and I know how difficult it can be to find a good doctor. I had been having very sever cramping for several days. I was back on the East Coast for Christmas with my family. But I figured - it's just cramps, what can anyone do? It will go away eventually. The Saturday after Christmas it was getting really bad. I thought I might pass out several times. But I had an early flight back to SFO Sunday morning, so I just dealt with it. Monday night I was up the whole night in pain, nauseous, dizzy, and very close to fainting. I live by myself, so that was a little scary. At this point, something had to be done. I didn't know what a doctor could do for cramps, but I knew I wasn't going to be able to handle much more of this. I went on zocdoc (I love that app) at 3 am and looked for the first available gynecologist appointment in the area. (I had only moved to the West Coast less than a month ago and hadn't been to see any doctors yet or figured out my insurance.) Dr Toig had an appointment available for 9 am. I got to the office and didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes (probably because my appointment was likely one of the first that day). Dr Toig examined me, and determined my situation was bad. He wanted to send me to the ER. I started panicking and so he calmly explained everything to me, which was extremely helpful in calming me down. He was straightforward about it, not overly negative or positive. And he took into account my views and preferences, rather than his own opinions when offering advice, which I highly value in a gynecologist. He explained everything to me in a way that showed he considered me an intelligent adult. He didn't dumb anything down and I am very grateful for that. He also was very thorough in his examination, which I really really appreciate. Of course, maybe he was more careful because I was in visible pain and something was obviously wrong. So this review may not necessarily pertain to a routine examination by Dr Toig. But in this situation, he was great. Especially for someone like me who wants all the details and hates being in the dark when it comes to medical issues. He also called ahead to the ER to let them know I was on my way and explain to them everything he'd found in his examination. I appreciate that level of care-taking in a doctor! Especially being in the state I was in at the time--not completely clear-headed or fully functional. When I called back a few weeks later to follow-up, he even remembered that I had a friend's wedding the day after I came into his office and asked if I was able to make it! (Then again - who knows - maybe I was a very memorable patient - maybe they know me as the girl who waited until her pain was ridiculously unbearable before seeing a doctor) I never thought that in the course of my emergency, I'd actually end up at a decent gynecologist's office! I have been seeing Dr. Toig for over 25 years and it was the best decision I ever made to transfer to his practice! It was my DC who referred me and I will be for ever grateful to her. Starting out as my Gynecologist I was adamant about having a Dr. with a kind caring disposition with an astute diagnostic ability along with being able to see the whole picture concerning my physical, mental and emotional health, and how they can be tied together. I was so pleased when he became my primary physician. There has always been that MUTUAL respect and trust and I have always been treated with care and concern regarding any issue I presented. It's not often that you find a Doctor who see's and treats you as a human, and not a 15 minute time slot! I have been seeing Dr. Toig as my OB and PCP for over 10 years. I have had several health problems, a difficult pregnancy and delivery, and he has dealt with them in a kind, and understanding manner. I delivered my baby with Dr. Toig. Average waiting time out in the reception area is about 40 min and additional waiting in the exam room after nurse check your blood pressure is about 30 to 40min. He never talks straightforward but he will always tell you not to worry or there will be no pain at all or nothing will go wrong. He never explains the worse case scenario but then when the worst thing happens, he still doesn't explain clearly enough to understand what went wrong and what will happen. He is not a great communicator. But I think he is good at what he does and cares about his patients. He is just not good at answering my questions and concerns. All that I heard from him was very short answers and the word "don't worry about it" As long as you don't mind his communication style and long waiting time, I recommend him. read more

Ugh. That's all I can say. Ugh. Stay away. I saw Gary S. Toig while I was pregnant with my third child. I'd been warned he was a "candy dispenser" doctor who loved to over medicate his patients, but my husband had a colleague who swore by the guy, and so we went. What everyone days about 3-4 hour wait times is true its also true his staff is nice. Unfortunately its ALSO true that he's a sexist. And *highly* unprofessional. Three weeks before my due date, he stripped my membranes, without my permission. THEN he ran an ultrasound. My child had not turned yet. I should havd sued him. If you ask other women, you'll hear a lot of similar stories. For your sake, your health, and the safety of those you love, find another doctor. If he really did lose his privledges at Sequoia, I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe Packard will catch on too. Its too bad a negative star rating isn't available. Ill have to settle for one. But he doesn't deserve that much. Again, ugh. read more

Terrible doctor. He misdiagnosed me and as a result of the misdiagnosis my real condition went untreated for much longer than it should have, causing much heartache and extreme pain. He was unsympathetic and his nurse had no idea what she was doing or how to use the instruments the doctor entrusted to her hands. The waiting room is dingy and depressing. There is no convenient parking. The elevator going up to his office looks like it may break down at any minute. I would seriously suggest that you keep looking for a doctor. read more

Three years ago, I stumbled upon Dr. Toig from a Yelp review. This changed my life and my family forever. My husband and I were not able to conceive for two years. My OBGYN from Mills-Peninsula told us to try six more months and come back. At my first appointment with Dr. Toig, he gave me the immediate sense of urgency. He quickly diagnosed that I had PCOS. He did more tests and put me on treatment quickly. I got pregnant within one month since my first appointment! Dr. Toig cared for me throughout my pregnancy and delivery. He performed a successful Cesarean Section. This time around, my family had moved out of the state. We wanted to have another child. After some disappointing visits to a local OBGYN, I went to a local fertility clinic for consultation. The doctors really didn't impress me at all. I could not trust myself to their hands. The fertility center gave me a long list of tests that they require; the time and expenses are outrageous - especially when I know Dr. Toig would have taken a much more efficient approach. This was when my husband said, why don't you call Dr. Toig. It makes more sense flying there than wasting our time getting uncertain results from the local doctors. When I heard Dr. Toig's voice over the phone, I seriously had tears in my eyes. I felt so helpless when I went to these other physicians, but I knew everything was going to be alright when I talked to Dr. Toig. Just like the last time, he quickly laid out the tests and after that, the treatment path. My husband and I were so relieved Dr. Toig agreed to see us remotely. Dr. Toig put me on one cycle of Lupron and FSH. Two weeks later, we flew to California to see Dr. Toig. He monitored the follicle growth, do the HCG shot, and insemination. I am now pregnant again. We are so excited that my son will have a sibling. This all happened so fast with Dr. Toig. Again, Dr. Toig did it in one cycle! Dr. Toig is truly an amazing physician. He is the most compassionate doctor my family and I have ever known. I know I can trust that he will do what's best for his patients. My family owes such gratitude to Dr. Toig and his wonderful team, especially Veronica and Debory for coordinating with me remotely. I would highly recommend Dr. Toig to anyone with fertility issues and for OBGYN and delivery/C-section. He is the best there is. read more

I have been with Dr. Toig for about 10 years. He has been there for me through thick and thin; always interested in my personal life and how it affects my health and well-being. He is always ready to discuss the pros and cons of all treatment options and bases his recommendations on what he would recommend if his wife was in my position and facing a similar situation. On his recommendation, I opted for a complete hysterectomy and have felt so much better since the surgery. I trust him completely. Dr. Toig takes his time with every one of his patients to make sure that you receive excellent care. Because of this, he often runs late but most of his patients are willing to wait since he will take his time when it's your turn. I have had the opportunity to switch to a different medical group that is more highly rated than my current one but I have refused to make the switch because I would lose Dr. Toig as my primary care doctor. read more
