The thing about the Collingwood/Fiztroy area is that there are so many great pubs that it can be hard to chose the one to regularly visit. Okay, I guess there is always the idea that you go to the pub that all your friend's go to, but the thing with me is that I can never stay in the same place at the same time. This pub is probably not one of my favourites, but it isn't all that bad, and being on my tram line does help. I haven't been here all that much though, probably because the only outdoor area are some tables along the sidewalk (I much prefer beer gardens). However the staff are pretty nice, and they do have live bands, which is also a bonus, though I do find the front bar does get pretty crowded. read more

Menu change again, it's a bit of a mix of the best of both menus now. I have to admit that I was really missing the old menu. The Pulled Pork Burger is pretty amazing, the meat marinated in bourbon and the smokey BBQ sauce leave you wanting more. They have chicken and waffles again, but only offered in the vegan version. I love the idea of having big in your face American dishes having just returned from the US. Whilst there I had a revelation that chicken and waffles was the most bizarre yet TASTY thing on the planet (lets not go into its healthiness). Gasometer should have been a similar revelation as these kind of joints are few and far between in Melbourne. But it was somewhat hit and miss. The Good: - Good beers with a number of interesting ales available (Australian ones on tap, American ones by the bottle) - Buffalo Wings pretty darn good - Deep fried battered pickles weird but delicious - mammoth portions The Bad: - the ribs were tasty but they didn't have that fall off the bone quality you'd expect The Ugly: - vegan ribs, think about that for a minute and you'll be confused as I am. I presume they aren't made with recycled bones. An interesting concept overall but one I'm not running back to to try again. read more

I was pretty excited when I heard that a new American style diner/pub had opened up! The owners of Gasometer have definitely done their homework. From day one this place has been packed almost every day of the week. An old converted Irish pub, Gasometer is a large building with many dining areas and professionally designed decor. In fact, everything about this place says that the owners know what they are doing. It is carefully tailored to appeal to the changing Fitzroy market and make money at every step of the way. I take my hat off to Gasometer as a very successful business model. But that is the exact reason why I probably won't be frequenting this place too often. The menu is not exactly expensive, but it isn't cheap either. And with any main you get two free sides of your choice. Which made me feel quite special for a moment until I realised that any burger that costs close to $20 should come with chips and salad anyway. And then there was the buffalo wings - free range to be sure - but even with my two sides of mac cheese and chips the four small pieces of chicken did not feel like a good hearty American meal I was expecting for the price tag. The food is not that bad but definitely not the packed full of high flavour intensity that is expected of most American classic dishes. So I guess what I am trying to say is that this place does everything right but it just has that underlying feeling that they are only doing it right enough to make a lot of money. But that is just my opinion - I definitely recommend checking it out and making up your own mind. read more

I loved the idea of a pub serving up American food with good, cold beer, but I'm not quite as taken with this pub now that I've been there. It looks lovely - dark and cosy with big, wooden tables. The beers are good so at least there's that, but the food kind of let it all down a bit. I've never been to the US but I was raised on American culture - Sesame Street was the first TV show I remember, and some of my favourite TV and film and music since then has been American - and I always imagined American cuisine to be heartier and naughtier than what was offered up at Gasometer. Just as you get off (ha!) the Freeway you're met by the wonderful occurrence of a pub on every corner. The second one you come across is the Gasometer. old school looking gold lettering and wonderful Guiness illustrations on the outside, it appears both inviting and of another world at the same time. It's a really nice old looking pub, and every time I've been there - usually an after work brew or party-esque thingy - everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves. The booths and tables to sit in for smaller groups work well, as does the seating along the bar itself. The bar people are nice and have a few good locals on tap. Apparently bands play here, but I can't really work out where. There's a function space upstairs, maybe that's where it happens. read more

We spent 4 months in NYC earlier this year, and this place is the only one in Melbourne that can adequately evoke the flavours (and serving sizes) of said burgh. The ribs are sensational, as is the cornbread. The pulled pork was a little underflavoured for my liking, but if you co-diner gets the ribs, you'll have adequate sauce to 'spiace it up'. A pretty good set of beer selections on tap, including the very appropriate 2 Brothers Growler. Hopefully they'll get over their Vale fetish soon and seek out some more adventurous tap offerings. read more

Thankfully some smart people got in charge of this site and changed it from the flailing Irish pub it once was. What they turned it into is a contemporary Australian / American gastro band friendly pub. The American part is mainly just the food though, definitely not the vibe. I ate at Gaso on Saturday night and was amazed and confused by the menu. My friend had the fried chicken with maple syrup on waffles. It was huge and I wasn't surprised when he didn't finish it. I had the chicken salad with the spicy sauce - hottest salad ever! The pub it great. A big roundish bar, booth seats lining the front windows, restaurant seating out the back with beautiful blue stone walls. The band room is great, with a second level balcony. There is also a second band room above the Restaurant. The shit bit is for the smokers, who have to trudge out on to busy Alexandra Parade to take in the fresh air - that'll learn 'em. read more

Have only eaten here a couple of times and the food is standard gastro-pub fare. It definitely has a good vibe and decent craft beer on tap. The main reason we come to the Gaso is to see bands. I've seen probably half a dozen gigs here and love the venue. In summer they open up the roof so you can have open air gigs and see the stars! It's really cool, as they have a retractable roof. They have a balcony above the stage which is really cool if you just want to sit and watch the gig from upstairs. You can get a good view of the stage as long as you are early up on the balcony so you can be at the front. Most times i've been up the front near the stage. It is a really rad venue, sound is always good and feels really intimate. As a bonus too they have cavalier beer on tap which is great for a beer lover like me! It should be noted that this venue has only been re-opened for about 18months, so any reviews before 2014 are talking about different management/venue. read more

Inevitably, every two months or so, I turn to my friends and pose the question: "Gasometer?" That question is generally answered with an enthusiastic: "Hell yeah!" And why not? Gasometer rocks. I am a southern food affectionado and love it that they serve vegetarian comfort food that, whilst still very tasty, extends beyond broccoli casserole, mac and cheese, and hush puppies. Their fries are definitely in the top 3 I've tasted (and I know me some fried potato). They change their menu quite regularly, so there is always something new to try. Be warned though: their portions are huge (if only they served half portions) and can be on the stodgy side. Nonetheless, good food where vegetarian/vegan options are not a mere afterthought, in a laid back atmosphere, at the end of Smith Street that is easy to find parking? Meh indeed. The second time I've been to eat and both were a let down - I wanted to give it a second chance before writing it off. I was with a group of about 15 and no one was thrilled with the food they ordered. The main draw card was the vegan options. The vegans were pleased with the amount of choice on the menu but underwhelmed with their meals. The plus sides were some great craft beers on the menu, served by the jug which was an excellent way to cater for our large group. Oh, and the people (hipster) watching was fabulous! Every time I come here I can't seem to go past their radical chilli dogs. The chilli on top is fairly spicy and delicious. I've stolen some of my girlfriend's pulled pork nachos before as well that was delicious. Basically this is "hi-end" American pub food, it's a bit pricey but I think it's worth it. Make sure you time your visit when there's a gig on, better still when there's a gig on upstairs. It's like being in someone's lounge. read more

Delicious vegan menu options. They make vegan hotdogs and actually sub the cheese and other good stuff for the vegan versions. They use a separate deep fryer for vegan food and they have vegan ranch, too! It's a punk and metal crowd, so if you don't like your music on the heavy side, you may not appreciate the vibe here. Can't give a proper review of the food as I was here for a Polish Pierogi and vodka night when the food was supplied by a third party (well worth a visit if they do it again) but I'm a big fan of the newest iteration of the place just as a pub and band space. It retains that comfy feel from prior days but just cleaned up a little. read more

When I was invited by a group of friends to an American style diner restaurant on Melbourne's Smith Street I had high hopes and - perhaps unduly - started salivating. This is a city that is serious about its food and has some frankly bizarre but quite often successful themed restaurants and drinking holes. I'm sad to say that my high hopes were somewhat misplaced. Located within The Gasometer Hotel - or pub - on the Collingwood side of Smith Street, Gasometer serves a mixture of classic American and Mexican diner food with some very impressive vegetarian and vegan options. I opted for the BBQ pulled pork at $19, which came served in a warm sour dough roll and served with apple coleslaw. There's nothing precisely WRONG with Gasometer. The vibe is upbeat and buzzing on a Friday and Saturday and the menu is nothing if not interesting. The quality of the food just isn't all that great. Next time I'll have a drink at one of Fitzroy's better pubs and hit McDonalds on the way home. Sorry Gasometer but you can get five - as good - burgers from Maccas for the price of your greasy rolls and the décor is more authentically American. read more

This place is like the hipster version of Cheers. Provided you're of the vaguely left of centre, mid-to-late-twenties crowd, chances are you'll run into someone you know over the course of an evening. Great if you're up for a big night out, not so great when attempting a quiet, solitary meal on a Tuesday night. The atmosphere is inviting and warm, and you definitely feel like you're amongst friends there. There's a good beer selection, and most of the bartenders can make a mean cocktail on request. Some of the female barstaff have a bit of attitude, but the guys are great. The food. Oh man, the food. HUGE portions, heavy and greasy. Definitely coming from an American culinary perspective. Be warned, it will be 20 minutes of bliss while you eat, then you'll be totally wiped later. Chicken and Waffles, need I say more? read more

I typically head to this place when I've a mate with a gig on, and while it's always packed... it's never been a place I've really enjoyed. Perhaps it's because I am a yank, but I'm not a fan of the recent explosion of American style diner food that appears to be filling the scene lately. It ain't exactly healthy food ya know? Apparently they've made a change with Easter European now, so maybe I'll give it another go. It does seem though, that most people I speak to like that American style they had, so maybe it's just me. The band room, especially the smaller one upstairs is great however. It channels a houseparty like vibe up there which gives the venue some extra points that the kitchen misses on. read more

It might be a good venue for music (I am just assuming and hoping!), but the restaurant didn't serve good food the one time we visited. Chicken parma was so poorly made that we couldn't take more than the first bite! I was thinking it should probably be hard to mess up chicken parma! But they managed!! The chicken had a bad taste and a bad smell. The market fish was edible. The fish would probably get 2 starts and the chicken would get zero. read more
