Hired from handyman service. Needed minimal drywall patching post electrical work. The worker showed up an hour late and with no drywall, mud or tape. Left for an hour to go to Home Depot and buy it. Four hours later really sub par work was half done. He said he would come back after lunch to finish & charge for another half day. I said no thank you. I DO NOT RECOMMEND GASPARS handyman services The story that ate New York! It's now been four weeks without an entry closet door.... We phoned Gaspars thinking it was a competent service oriented company. WRONG! Our closet door mechanism was not working. A person from Gaspars handyman service came to our house. He took down the door in about an hour, then spent 3 hours not calling, but driving around looking for the part at $139.00 per hour. Six hundred dollars later they did not have the part and the closet door was not up. After a month we gave up on them. We contacted another company in Seattle. We've been working to remodel our 1968 home for almost 15 years, since we purchased it. In the past, we've unfortunately made some bad decisions regarding contractors, which means we've been derailed by both those decisions and by personal circumstances. But now, we're done! We now LOVE our home, and we gratefully thank Gaspar's for helping us complete this journey. We worked with and interviewed a lot of firms over the last 15 years, and our initial foray into our remodel had seriously degraded our trust in contractor promises. Gaspar's Construction cured that. I wish we had chosen them at the beginning of our journey!!! Everyone at Gaspar's exhibits the highest professionalism and dedication to quality. When anything unexpected cropped up (which happens with every remodel), they were upfront and honest and PROMPT. I have the highest respect for their honesty and integrity. They are not the least expensive option out there for a large remodel, but they are the best and worth every penny. If we had chosen them early on, before trying out other contractors, we would have saved a ton of money overall and been much less stressed. I have rarely worked with companies that I can recommend wholeheartedly, without any reservations. Gaspar's is one of those rare companies. I used Gaspar's Handyman group to do a ceiling repair due to an upstairs leak. The quality of the work was fine, but the total cost approached 3x what they quoted me. Additionally, things got complicated with the scheduling after we agreed on a time. They actually then contacted me the day before trying to come that day - and these were repairs to a unit that I do not live in. I thought this was unprofessional. And when I did manage to arrange for them to come early (which was really inconvenient), but they had to arrive by a certain time that was agreed on, they didn't show. read more

We hired Gaspar's to complete a remodel of our 200 sq ft kitchen and we are beyond happy with the end result. Jen was our project manager and she really helped us focus on what problems we wanted to solve with our remodel, to be sure we had them all addressed, and so she knew exactly how to help us. She was honest with us to help us keep in touch with reality when it came to costs and timeline, which helped so much. Our designer, Margaret, came up with gorgeous plans to match what we had in our minds and she helped pick some finishes, while we already had some others in mind. When the work started, Chris was our on-site lead and he kept us informed and won over the heart of our 5 year old. They used BuilderTrend to keep us informed on a daily basis of the work done, including photos, and we also met weekly to discuss the project and better understand any changes coming our way. No, it wasn't a totally perfect project but we didn't expect it to be. They adjusted when things came up and moved quickly to resolve issues. As a homeowner of less than 10 years of a new construction, we have not had the need (yet) to take on any major renovation projects. That said however we have had a variety of handyman services out to the home to keep it looking new. Some were good, while others where less than desirable. Most recently we decided to give Gaspar's a try following a friend's recommendation, and we are certainly glad we did! The handyman turned out to be a handywoman (can't recall her name unfortunately) and she did a superior job on a variety of tasks we required over the course of the 4 hours we paid for. She repaired an attic vent, a ding in some sheetrock, to include matching the paint and painting, and also replaced and painted some trim. The best part about the experience was everything looked new and matched after completed. Unlike some of the other reviews, I will not complain about what we paid because more importantly I realize the VALUE in a job well done the first time, which is exactly what occurred. You know the old saying, you get what you pay for! Thank you Gaspar's for a job well done! I will not hesitate to use their 'handyperson' services in the future, and when we are ready for that big renovation, Gaspar's will be the first call we will make! read more

We had a terrible experience with Gaspar's- please don't use them for your project! The website looked good and the office was nice, and they were all smiles and nods in discussing our project and budget. They came to the house so we could sign the contract, and the saleswoman went around the house and smiled and nodded as we signed the dotted line next to our budget and handed over a deposit check. After the architect and contractor made an initial visit, we received a phone call to say that it could come in up to $150K over our budget. They were unable to give any specifics on an estimate or get any closer than a $150K range, even though other contractors had been able to do so. We decided not to continue working with them since we couldn't get an actual estimate from them and didn't want to commit in case it did go $150K over budget. They said they'd send back the unused part of our deposit. When we got the check, we saw that they took $850 out! They said it was for design work they'd started before the architect and contractor looked at it. Who does that? We're furious and feel that $850 is completely unreasonable- why would you start design work before even seeing the house?? They didn't even get us an estimate, where others charged $200 for a consultation lasting several hours, with an estimate at the end. They have been salesy, flippant, and disrespectful, and I wish there was something more we could do besides writing bad reviews about them on the internet. If you're looking for an architect/contractor, our advice is to go with someone you really trust and skip the glitzy design-build companies- especially Gaspar's. They only want your money. read more

If it was possible to rate lower, we would. I've used the handyman service for both my home and business. First home. I paid $800 plus dollars to have a barn door slider installed in my home. Very expensive considering the scope of the work but okay. 2 months later it was falling off the wall. Literally. When the handyman came back to repair his original work he accused is of being too rough with the opening/closing. The hardware is rated for use on barns with heavy duty usage. I'm 100%certain that we weren't being too aggressive and I'm 100% certain this man has zero customer service skill. Business. We hired Gaspars to install IKEA kitchen cabinets and lighting in our 2 salons. The office staff was sent the plans via email and we were told it would be one full week for install. The install was not completed by the end of the week. There were so many complications and complaints that I can't even get really into here. After voicing my concerns with Gaspars they sent me Paul smooth the situations. During our conversation where I pointed out numerous problems he checked his texts and phone and later accused me via email for verbally abusing him. Yes I was frustrated. Example: the handyman didn't screw on the door handles, he glued them on. A staff person opened a door and the handle flew off and hit her in the head. So yes, I was frustrated, but adding to that was the fact that Paul was arrogant and rude. Checking his phone repeatedly and accusing us of "changing the scope"of the work. Truth: the office person admitted later to NEVER OPENING THE EMAIL with the plans included from IKEA for business and the link expired. After admitting that she didn't open it and print it for the handyman or discuss it with him at all she also several times accused us of "changing the scope of the work". Gaspars handyman service is an hourly price. The scope of the work never changed it was the same from the day we purchased the cabinets from IKEA til the completion of the job. Regardless, given that they are by the hour NOT by the job service even if the scope changed (WHICH IT HAD NOT) they got paid the same rate per hour. I hired Gaspars instead of the IKEA install folks because as a local small business owner it felt like the right thing to do. Give the business to the company right up the street instead of the big company. What a mistake. The job was left unfinished at the end of the week and I was advised I could hire them again to complete a job that could have been done in less than the allotted time if the handyman was more efficient and proficient in the task at hand. So no, Gaspars, I refuse to patron your business, I refuse accept your terrible quality of service and I'll tell every single person who will listen how awful your company is. My attorney advised me that a liable/ negligence suit would be difficult because the services were being paid for by my product company and the contract was not in my name. I had such a positive experience with Gaspar's! Our charming 1920s condo was in need of serious plaster repair. Within two weeks, Ted and his staff arranged to have a site visit where a quote was given on site. They not only completed a massive plaster repair project, but they also painted (with extreme attention to detail). They were quick, detailed, and ON BUDGET. Home renovations are tough. They are expensive, stressful, and exhausting. Thankfully, you can trust this company to do good work. We will definitely use them again in the future. read more

Wow, I'm surprised to see other reviews on here. I actually created a Yelp account specifically to sing their praises. My entire experience from start to finish was exceptional. We were in the process of buying our first home and were at our wit's end with our lender and our seller. Our lender gave us two days notice to get a railing installed per the appraiser's inspection. We called 15+ contractors and no one had time for us or would take such a small job. I called Gaspar's on a Wednesday night at 4:45pm. Sarah had a contractor confirmed to go out Thursday morning at 8:30am to install our railing! While Gaspar's main team was on another project, Sarah made time for someone to complete the work (to code) and to put us in the best position to close on our house in time. Heather did the work for us and was extremely communicative. She called me when she arrived, went over the job to make sure we were both on the same page and then called me when it was completed to go over it again and sent me photos. Working with Gaspar's was the most positive experience I had throughout the home buying process. Sarah made everything so easy and sympathized with our situation. She took all of the stress off of our shoulders and then Heather hit a homerun with her quick but solid work. The railing was beautifully constructed and perfectly to code. We passed the final inspection with flying colors and it was completely affordable on top of that. I had Gaspar's out to demo old mailboxes and install new ones for our townhouse complex. It was difficult to find someone to do this work as it involved a small concrete pad, but Gaspar's was more than willing. Every experience, from scheduling with Ted to the to the actual installation with Ken was friendly, positive and productive. Gaspar's complete focus was on the quality of their work and the customer experience. Ken did things the right way, and watching him I knew why I had hired someone to do the job. Will use Gaspar's again. --- Gaspar's bills for transit time to purchase replacement parts that they don't have on hand. I was okay with this until I discovered that the tech who handled my job billed for two hours she spent driving around town searching for a part that wasn't even stocked at the stores she checked. If replacement parts are necessary to complete a job, one would hope the tech knows exactly what they are and where they can be quickly and reliably obtained. If there's any doubt, parts should be secured ahead of time with a phone call. Since they're unable to this, it's the customer who pays for such iffy excursions. read more

The woman I "worked" with at Gaspar's--Barbara--seemed genuinely uninterested in my business and disrespectful of my time. She scheduled an initial phone call with me in order to get un understanding of my project. Before the call she wanted me to send her a detailed email, with pictures, describing the work I was needing done--because in her words "as I know, she is very busy" and this will save time during our phone call (For the record, Barbara, no, I don't know that you are very busy because I'm a potential customer and I don't keep track of your personal schedule). I had several projects so this took a good amount of my time, but I totally understand the need for it. On the day of our phone call, Barbara called late, hadn't read the detailed email I had sent her, and couldn't find it (you know, that email that she was going to read before our phone call to save us some time). She blew through the call, completely missing two of the projects listed in my email. The end result of our call? She may be able to get back to me with a quote later or may have to send someone out to my house to get a quote--and there is a charge for this because as Barbara repeatedly reminded me, they are a "premium company". Barbara said she would call me the next day with more information. She never called, never emailed, never got back to me with a quote. I guess that's a good thing because it would have been a waste of time on Barbara's part (and as I know, she is very busy)--I went with another company that was more professional and responsive. read more

All I got from Gaspar's was an over-the-phone estimate but the estimate was so frighteningly high I suggest everyone stay away from these guys! I called to get a bid for a 10' x 10' deck installed - no railings, just the support beams, a couple of cement piers and the decking as it is less than 20" off of the ground. They asked a ton of ridiculous questions "How many estimates am I getting" "What is my budget" etc. etc. By the way, never tell a contractor what your budget is if you want them to come in under it...I made sure to not give any firm answers so that they would give me a reasonable number, not what they thought I would be willing to pay. So anyway, the guy says that will be $8,000-$10,000. I repeated the number back, thinking he meant to say 800-1000, but no, he meant 8-10k. Even using the nicest materials, that means they would charge us a minimum of $7k in labor for what would take an experienced handyman less than a day. Stay far, far away from this shady company. read more

I had been looking for a decent, reasonably priced all-around handy "man" since I became a homeowner years ago. I kept finding the "friend of the friend", "the great guy who did work for my mom" etc. You get the idea. So when I heard the ad for Gaspar's on KUOW (NPR), I decided...ok. I'll call someone who is a "professional handy service". As others have said, Gaspar's is polite and professional. True. But I was taken aback when they said they'd charge over $140 for my initial estimate. Though totally shocked by this, I still figured, "well, if they're good, I don't mind paying for an estimate". As noted it wasn't cheap and as it turned out, the estimate was not applicable to the work they would do!!! I still hired them. I had already paid for the estimate, I thought. What the heck. The estimator was dressed nicely and seemed to know his stuff. Paying for an estimate is unusual and "sets the bar" quite high for quality, right? I'm amazed by the rave reviews of Gaspar's. I totally agree with the folks who had poor experiences. Without going in to tons of detail, suffice it to say that they had to redo my simple tub re-caulk and the second time was worse than the first. I found Gaspar's to be very expensive for the sub-par, over-all work they did. When someone is charging upwards of $65/hour, I expect a simple job like caulking to be a breeze and not a re-do. At least the friend of the friend who does crappy work, is reasonably priced!! Oh, I do get greeting cards from Gaspar's at the holidays...that will pay for that original work estimate by 2055. read more

I wasn't even able to receive an estimate. Several attempts at emailing Lilly failed, likely due to a full email inbox? I had to double check the email twice with their office and had it right--it still bounced back. Every time I called to talk to Lilly she was in a meeting, no one to talk to there? Since I was not able to get an email bid--Finally I requested that they send someone for an estimate, they told me it would cost $85.00 to get an estimate. Nearly 1/4 of the price of the whole project (as generally quoted by Lilly over the phone). Here's a red flag--Lilly was not so interested in repairing my project, and insisted in replacement. If you advertise handyman service, you should be adept in making repairs. She claimed it would cost similar in price on labor to replace with new - perhaps she should consider the material cost too.. I would wager money they mark that up. Also, the condescending tone of everyone I have talked to on the phone needs some attention. I directly oversee the maintenance and management of 105 homes, and Gaspars has lost my business due to their rude phone demeanor, lack of effort a "we're better than your project" attitude, and their charge for an estimate. I have had several weeks to calm down prior to writing this review - which is good because I was extremely aggravated there for a while. I would not recommend this outfit to anyone needing design/build services. Overall they are a nice group of people, but their bid will likely be on the high side - at least ours was. In order to get an accurate bid for our small-medium sized kitchen project, we were asked to sign a design and feasibility agreement to pay them for their time. We discussed the scope of the project at length and agreed on a budget goal prior to signing the design agreement, but be forewarned this number is basically meaningless. For our project, the final bid was more than 40% over our initial goal budget, and we ultimately decided not to move forward with them. Of course, I was still stuck with the bill for their time during design and feasibility. This money is due, regardless of whether or not a project moves forward or if their bid is anywhere close to the agreed upon preliminary budget. The bill for this ran into the several thousand dollar range - money lost. As far as the reason why the bid was so off, nothing was provided beyond the general, "things ended up costing more than anticipated" rationale. Frustratingly, our faucet choice was cited multiple times as part of the reason for the budget overrun, though even if its cost was thrown out entirely, the bid was still over 40% off the initial goal we agreed upon at the outset. It is worth noting here that at no point during the design/feasibility phase, which lasted several weeks, was there any mention made to us that the original budget might not be attainable. Previously we had worked with this company for a small bathroom renovation which turned out quite well (though it too was expensive) and we have been happy with the outcome. We also worked with them for a few small scale home projects through their handyman division, also with good results. Unfortunately however, after this experience of wasting thousands of my dollars and lots of my time on a kitchen project that will not be built, I will no longer work with them and cannot recommend them to anyone. Bottom line: They do good work, but you will pay a premium for it. I will always go elsewhere now. read more

What happened to Gaspar's? I used them for two projects over the last eight years and always liked the results. I called them last year for help with a plumbing and roofing job. Never again. The estimator, Andy, didn't tell me that they couldn't do the work and would just be calling a subcontractor, and tacking on an almost 30 percent surcharge to a four figure estimate. Then the estimator quit, and the other person, Chelsea, I was working with quit, and everyone stopped emailing me back about my questions. No email bounceback message telling me they no longer worked there. No follow up at all, even from the person who worked there that I did email. When I finally called them. on top of that, they took $500 for the work they didn't do out of the deposit and refused to refund any of what they claimed they spent by the guy who quit in the middle of the job. GASPARS systematically overcharges and is unethical. They receive a minus 2 stars. They arrived 33 min late, yet started charging at 9:00am the scheduled start time. They required a $200 deposit on Visa before appt is even scheduled. 3 simple jobs (fixing a fence hinge, putting up shower curtain rod, recaulking a tub) required 5 hours of their time. They also said they charge for writing up the bill. total was over $550. I appealed this on Visa, but because I unfortunately signed the front of their bill, not realizing the back of the bill has fine print I could not successful appeal on Visa. When you sign, you agree with all their hidden and deceptive practices. Two friends used them, and they will not ever use them again. read more

I wasn't sure where to start when we were looking at getting our kitchen and master bath redone. I started asking around with friends and neighbors and a couple mentioned Gaspar's and that they had a really great reputation. I was a little surprised by the reviews here, but decided to give them a shot. We went through the initial meeting and I felt like they really listened to us about what we wanted and had some great ideas we hadn't thought of. So we decided to let them design the work. While we were in the midst of design, I mentioned that I kind of wanted to do the guest bath eventually in the same way that the master bath was going to be. They said that it would ultimately be cheaper to do all of the designing at once, even if we waited to do the actual construction. It did end up saving us and I was glad to get that out of the way. We are going to wait on the construction side for now (just trying save a few dollars!). We were really excited about the design and decided to go ahead with the kitchen and master bath. I have to say that it went surprisingly smooth! Their construction guys were always respectful and on time. They never went ahead with a change without talking to us first. And they explained things really well to us (first time remodeling for us). We are so happy with the result. Everything looks really great. The price was what we thought it was going to be and what they estimated. There weren't any surprises that aren't normal (they found a leak in one of the pipes in the bathroom that couldn't be seen until it was all torn up). But even with that, they told us right away what needed to be done, how much it was going to be, and how long it would take. All in all, it was a really good experience. We were nervous doing it (it's a lot of money to spend!), but we felt taken care of by Gaspar's and I'm happy to recommend them. We're going to do that guest bath in the coming year and are definitely going to use them to finish it up. They told us they have a handyman division too that does small jobs but we haven't used them yet. read more

Terrible experience, just like so many others here. Why in the world would a contractor with SO many negative reviews also have a bunch of 5-star ratings too? (It seems to be one or the other, doesn't it). Well, I can think of a reason or two, and it relates to the intense PR job that Gasper's did constantly while in the midst of going over budget and doing sub-par work on my project. These people are actually best at self-promotion, not at actually getting the work done. Believe the 5-star reviews if you want, but I'd be skeptical of who wrote them, and how close to Gasper those people are. It's been a couple of years now, and I'm still having nightmares over my project getting more and more expensive as the weeks went on, amidst constant fights with the contractor over quality. What's more, they make it seem like it's YOUR fault that you're not satisfied. Stay away, is my advice. Life's too short for snake oil at high prices. read more

I've worked with Gaspar's Handyman division on three separate occasions now and have been extremely happy with the work. The projects that they have worked on have ranged from securing a dryer vent to replacing a rotten window. The wide range of knowledge that each of their handymen has allows for them to take on such a wide range of projects. Additionally, the handyman "division" is part of their larger, full-scale remodel business, so they have access to a lot more stuff than the smaller handyman companies. What I am most appreciative of, besides the solid workmanship, is the oversight and scheduling that the handymen receive from management. Gaspar's has a full support staff for scheduling and estimating. They were so quick, professional and friendly--I never felt like I wasn't being taken care of. I am a big fan of Gaspar. My experience has been entirely with the handyman services department. Ted who was the office guy for the handyman dept was awesome and he transitioned to Erica when he was promoted. While the hourly rate of $85.00 per hour is a little on the high side for handymen my experience has been it is more than fair for light carpentry, patching, light painting, working on leaks, diagnosis of leaks, etc. I cant say enough bout Reed Hanberg. If you can get him for the handyman work all will go smoothly. My wife and I love Reed. He is great with our dogs, he is tidy with his work, he is very kind, and responsive. We just love having him work at our house. We know whatever he does will be quality work with a lot of love put into it. We have spent a lot of money with Gaspars over the years and they have done a lot of work repairing leaks in our home which is very near to the sound. They found our leaks and fixed them. I would give them 5 stars but no one is 5 stars unless its free! As I said, fair price for quality work that they STAND BEHIND. We worked with Gaspar's again in 2010 to complete our major exterior remodel of our home. This included a complete re-design and rebuild of a second story deck, replacing the remaining windows and siding, removing and running a new gas line including a new BBQ box outlet and putting on a new roof. Again, an incredible experience. The reasons we give them a 5 star review are the following: Excellent upfront expectation setting and design starting with the estimate process. Professional yet personable employees and management. Quality, artistic work done quickly. Previously unforeseen costs (you'll always have some) are identified immediately when found and follow a defined change order process. Strong relationships with sub-contractors and others in the business so we received excellent response and quality of work from everyone on site. Their upfront costs during design and estimate and construction costs may be somewhat higher than others out there, but, in the end, the long lasting quality of the work will bring more value to us than if we had gone with a "lowest-bidder". read more
