Whilst this is a tourist place as it is so close to the big boat tour place in Bodensee the quality of the food and the service is much better than I expected. We took an early drive through the mountains, through a one car width toll road, and then ended up in the secluded valley of Schönenbach No your cell phones dont work out here and folks that are here dont want to be found. However they have a lively pub that also sells really good food. One of the most traditional dishes of this area are Käsknöpfle, which are dumplings made with a combo of local Alpine cheeses, flour/water dough, and fried onions. Of course my friend knew all the good stuff, so we got a local sausage/cheese salad with vinaigrette, a few local cheeses, and we were set. Holy fuck was this good, and I had just eaten not too long ago. The vinaigrette was great with the salad, the local cheeses and the bread! I couldnt stop eating... So in the chance that you happen to be in the Alps bordering Switzerland and Germany in Austria, see if you can find this place. It's well worth it.

We happened upon it just by looking up restaurants close to our hotel and it wound up being our favorite place we ate in our whole 10 days in Switzerland! The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming. When you walk up, there are tables and chairs throughout the walkway and then an entire open area of tables off of the outside bar for a fun hangout. The building appears to be an old house turned restaurant and is so beautiful on the outside and so warm and inviting on the inside. The menu had accommodations for everyone - which is so nice as I am a lactose intolerant pescatarian! I got the beetroot and black bean burger both nights I was there and it was to die for!! I ate the entire thing both nights and just wanted more (it was a big burger though)!! I also had a watermelon spritz which was so refreshing! You can tell the owners/workers get to know their regulars as I saw them stopping by tables and chatting - which was just so fun to see! If you're in Zurich, I highly recommend popping by! My only regret was that I never saved room for the brownie dessert!

You can't miss it. It's centrally located in the Town Hall Square with views of other colorfully painted buildings. The frescoes of these historical buildings on this side of town are absolutely stunning. The pictures don't truly reflect the full beauty of it all. This restaurant was highly recommended to us. I can totally see why. We were very fortunate to find an empty table for lunch. The outdoor terrace is very popular considering the beautiful scenery around us. The menu has a mix of Swiss German and Italian menu items, as well as an extensive wine list. Yes, it's also a wine tavern (Weinstube). I looked around and noticed that just about everyone was enjoying the St. Galler Gourmet Sausage. It was an easy decision for me. It was served with a seasonal salad and brown bread. That salad was absolutely delicious! I need to find a recipe for this salad & dressing. I could eat this everyday. The sausage was tasty & juicy. This was exactly the kind of meal I was looking for in a local & traditional specialty. I would order the same thing again. I can see why it's so popular. My husband decided to get the Penne all'Arrabbiata with chicken. He absolutely loved the spiciness of the sauce. He seemed very happy with his choice, and kept commenting on it. The service was great from beginning to end. I couldn't have asked for a better atmosphere. There were groups of families and couples all around us enjoying their meal. America wasn't even discovered then! While visiting Stein am Rhein, my friend and I made this a must-see place. We stopped in for drinks. I had a delicious apple cider, my friend had a local beer. The interior is quaint and cozy, lined with hard wood and tables fit snugly together. I was in awe imagining all the generations of people who ate and drank here for the past six hundred years. Amazing. If you're in Stein am Rhein, make sure to stop by Rother Ochsen and make yourself a part of its historic legacy.
