Berlin's Hotel Krone & Lamm is very nicely located in Zavelstein next to the picturesque ruins of a…read moremediaeval castle. It belonged once to the knights of Zavelstein and there is still an impressive tower with a height of 28 m which survived French destruction. We use to accomodate company visitors there and the very best time to visit Zavelstein is certainly crocus blossom. The Lamm offers rooms with lovely panorama view across Black Forest fir trees to the Teinach valley, while the Krone has rooms with market place view and some with castle view. There are several gemuetliche restaurant premises Die Kronenstube, Die Wirtschaft, Das Ofenstüble, Das Kaminzimmer, and Der Sandsteingewölbekeller (the crown, the saloon, the stove room, at the fireplace, sandstone vault cellar) where there are local specialities served as for instance trouts, swabian maultaschen, swabian hand-made spätzle, and not to forget famous Black Forest licquors, but also excellent international dishes. A real Zavelstein Knight Meal providing mediaeval food conducted by a master of ceremonies would be another attraction for groups. Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte with tea or coffee is a pleasure in the afternoon. The Lamm has a beautiful spa and highspeed WLAN is available everywhere.

It is a relatively large Hotel which has seen considerable investion over the years. We use to accomodate company visitors there. They enjoy the lovely atmosphere of Black Forest and appreciate english speaking staff, english menus, internet in the room and acceptance of major credit cards (it is a shame but in Germany not general practise). The restaurant offers typical German food as for instance Hausgemachte Schwäbische Maultaschen (Swabian Pockets), venison, trout but of course for visitors from the US also Rib-Eyes (Swabian not US-Prime). There is excellent German beer served: Schwabenbräu and Alpirsbacher. And regarding liquors and German Schnaps: Kirschwasser (cherry) and Ziebärtle (cherry plum) can hardly be beaten. There is a nice spa with pool and sauna for recreation after tough work. The Ochsen is also a good starting point for hiking, jogging or bicycling along the river Enz bicycle lane without too much of inclination which I personally cherish.

The Sonne with a cosy pub by the side called The Junge Alban both are run by Tilo Lutz and his mother Rosel. The Sonne has lovely tidy, clean and airy rooms with all on suit facilities and great food, the Junge Alban has just renovated the upstairs rooms which are now all on suit. On some Sundays in the year Tilo puts on a Piano Breakfast, this is a buffet at which he plays the piano and sings, it is always very popular the atmosphere in the Alban is relaxing and the drinks are of high standard. But the best of all is the home made Black Forest Gateau not to be missed. The area around the village is great for walking as the forest is just at the back door. We are regular visitors. So keep up the good work you two we will visit again soon Eric and Betina

The Schwarzwald did not cooperate the day we drove through. The entire forest was shrouded in…read moreclouds that reduced our visibility to about a five-yard radius around the car. Because of this, the Mummelsee was only a sign indicating a parking lot that we managed to glimpse on the side of the road. Relieved to get off the road, we decided to stop here for our requisite Black Forest cake. Let me start by saying that this hotel is a very cozy place to relax if stuck in the Black Forest during bad weather. Even though the views were of nothing but white, the restaurant was very comfortable. However, do not eat here if you are in anything resembling a hurry. Lunch for three with dessert managed to eat up two hours of our day. I'm not sure how much of this is cultural and how much is the restaurant, but everyone here moves SLOOOOOWLY. When there is nothing better to do, it's not a big deal, but if we had actually had a day with good weather, I would have been very frustrated. That said, the food was worth stopping for. It is classic German cuisine done well. I was particularly thrilled to get schmalz and dark bread as a starter. Kid was very excited to eat spaetzle with gravy. "It's like noodles!" Husband and I ordered rather blindly, as the server didn't offer us a menu in English (which I saw later that they did have), and our guesses worked out well. It was an altogether pleasant meal topped off with a really outstanding Black Forest cake. If you need a place to stop just to check that particular item off of your tourist list, this is a great place to do it. Another good reason to stop is the excellent store below the restaurant. They have all sorts of Black Forest treats to take with you. We left with a BF ham, a kirchwasser salami, and a bottle of schnapps. Yum. So even if you never actually get to see the view, I would still recommend this as a stop on your Black Forest drive...who knows, the lake actually might be pretty, too!

Atmosphere: the restaurant has a very welcoming appearance. There is ample seating for various size parties. There is even a children's play area near the front of the cafe. The large windows/doors open onto a wonderful view of Mummelsee, though it was far too foggy the day we visited to see much of it. Staff: the waiter was attentive and ensured we had everything we needed. Unfortunately, one of our party received the wrong order, but the situation was resolved. Food: as we only had coffee and cake, I can only comment on that. It was thoroughly delicious. Please be aware that some of the desserts do have liqueur in them, so double check before ordering them as they may not be what you expect. Overall, this is a very nice cafe to stop at if you're traveling through the Black Forest and need a break to stretch your legs.
