Got seen by Dr Bhavya Akhouri for GI issues. Saw her mainly because she was a female despite there being experienced and better doctors like Chepyala. She was totally clueless about my condition despite many visits. In the end she said she didn't know what I had. It couldn't be anything else and it couldn't be IBS. She had no answers for me. Oh and the colonoscopy she did, was so very painful. She seems to have absolutely no experience at all, I awoke during the procedure despite being sedated due to the pain and realized the nurses were pushing top down on my colon because it was too inflated by what Akhouri was doing incorrectly. I found myself pushing downward with my hands as well. It was intensely painful despite sedation and I have given birth with no pain relief as well. *Here's the ICING on the cake*: After the various fruitless appointments and no answers from Akhouri my PCP referred me to university of Iowa with a specialist for suspected Pancreas issues. Akhouri found out about this appointment (for which I waited 2 months with severe digestive issues) and Sent them an email that I didn't need that appointment because she thought I didn't have pancreatic problems (without any scans or tests). The specialist refused to see me and the appointment was cancelled without my knowledge. Later Akhouri's nurse calls me up to have me book more appointments with her telling me that I have GI issues and I must be seen, I could sense her panic that I was leaving their service to be seen elsewhere. Very dishonest, unethical business practices. I wouldnt touch her with a 10 feet pole if possible. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND DR BHAVYA AKHOURI. read more

***Haven't actual had my appointment yet, so this isn't based upon any procedure by any of the physicians.** I'm only 23, but after being on several medications for depression/anxiety, with horrible side effects, I've been experiencing HORRIBLE digestive problems. I'm not going to go into detail, but it has been a life altering. My physician & psychiatrist both suggested me to make an appointment here, since the symptoms are getting worse and worse, and nothing else is seeming to work. I found this a little odd, a colonoscopy at 23?! I had never heard of it. But both my dad, and doctors insisted on this being scheduled, after a year of pain, to make sure there wasn't anything seriously wrong with my digestive system. So I submitted the form on line (was a little embarrassed) and got a pleasant voice mail from one of the receptionists. I forgot to call back & I received a letter in the mail notifying me that I needed to call back and make an appointment. So I did, and wow what a bad idea! I left a message and then got a call back right away from a woman named 'Tanya' a receptionist or something along those lines. She was one of thee RUDEST people I have ever spoken with over the phone, ever. I felt like I had done something wrong by calling. "YOU DO NOT NEED A COLONOSCOPY AT 23!!!" I was super polite and tried to explain the situation and my doctors referrals, but she just continued to make me feel like a complete idiot for calling. She said (in a snotty tone), "Ugh, I'll have to talk to one of the doctors to even see if you can get a pre-apt because I think you've gotten confused this is unnecessary. I'll call you back" Tanya are you one of the physicians here? If so please explain in more detail and what other options there are. I could not believe this. And I am from LA and am VERY USED to poor customer service. And to think she probably speaks with many older people is terrifying. My experience has been with Addie Ketelsen, her nurse, billing department and Dr. chepeyala (unsure of spelling). Addie seemed concerned and helpful at consult, not at all after. Her nurse does not return phone calls for over a week, even when leaving several requests. I have never talked with Dr. Chepeyala. He walked into to procedure room to do my scope, walked right past me, no introduction, not even a smile or nod. He is very odd, no bedside manner, actually no personality at all. I felt like just a $ number. I will never recommend any of these health care "professionals". Billing department will not help you with your insurance coverage. I was sent home with 3 breath test and told to call my insurance company to see if they would cover them. I called, they said that the Doctor's office would need to call them with more info. I requested them to do so. Over the next 10 days I called the doctors office 3 times to find out if the tests were covered. On the third call I was informed that they would not call my insurance company. I have never written a review in my life and could go on and on with more details. My advice, GO somewhere else, even if you have to drive an hour. read more

I'm 24, and had a similarly bad experience - since February this year, I've been experiencing some seriously painful and irritating intestinal issues, which I'd been working with my family doctor to correct, to no success. They referred me to Gastoenterologists PC, and there was some discussion of a colonoscopy to see what was going on - however, I had to wait until MAY! I finally had my initial meeting with Dr. Qiao, who seemed to care less that he was in the room with a patient at all. He spoke almost constantly during our interview, and rarely let me get a word in edgewise as to the specifics of my condition, instead just rattling questions off and occasionally raising his head to analyze me. He then explained that he'd not be doing a colonoscopy due to my young age, but that he would recommend some take-home breath tests which I could complete and return to help figure out what was going on. Finally, he set a follow up appointment for August, which gave me the feeling I was effectively being dismissed as a patient. I completed the breath tests, returning all three of them well within the advised span of two weeks. Time went by, and my intestinal troubles continued to bother me, but I received no word from the Doctor, the Lab, a Nurse, or anyone else, either. When I was home sick from the same issue during the second week of June (that's 5 weeks after my initial appointment, and 3 weeks after returning the tests for you math wizards), I decided to give the office a call to check in and see if they either had my results or if they might recommend something to give me some relief. After playing phone tag for most of the day with one of the nurses, I was finally told through voicemail message what the tests had said. When I tried to return the call to clarify some things and speak with a professional in person, I was again sent to voicemail - the same nurse later returned my message with another message, stating that she would send a packet in the mail outlining my new dietary restrictions. Over the last few weeks, I've been getting used to said diet (which sucks, and is proving very difficult to learn), but still experiencing many of the same issues, and even some new ones. I went back to my family doctor to follow up on some things, but after becoming concerned I was experiencing bowel obstruction, I was encouraged to contact Gastroenterologists PC again - needless to say, not something I was looking forward to. After describing my concerns (again to a voice mailbox), my call was returned much later in the day by a nurse who for lack of a better word, was evil. She seemed to have listened to the message I had left, but nonetheless insisted that I re-explain everything to her regarding the issue. She then told me, in no uncertain terms that "if [I] were experiencing a bowel obstruction, I'd not be speaking to her over the phone", citing that it is a "very serious problem" which is accompanied by a great deal of pain. She then continued, terrible attitude and all, to go BACK OVER literally everything I had already tried using to resolve my troubles. When I complained that Metamucil and Myralax were just exacerbating the issue, and that I'd had no luck with either resolving the problem, she encouraged me to try again - "you're just going to have to keep trying different combinations until you find something that works for you." That did it for me - no one at this office seems to have any interest in actually fixing a problem; it seems they'd much rather just impose dietary restrictions and make vague supplement recommendations. I told the nurse she could cancel my follow up in August - I have no intention of letting my healthcare be handled at this facility, now or at any point in the future, and would encourage anyone considering going there to rethink their decision. read more

I had my first colonoscopy done in 1997, at the age of 39. At that time I had 2 adenomas removed. For a short while I went through another gastroenterologist, but since have returned to this community for care. I like my provider here, he remembers my specific conditions when he sees me. However the last colonoscopy I got, my insurance paid only 80 percent of the bill, and the remaining 20 percent is billed to me. I am on disability withe limited income. Jan 1 of this year, I became elligible for Medicare and also go BCBS Plan F, will have no part remaining to pay after insurance. My insurance prior to this cost me over 900 per month. Though I have paid $150.00 to the balance, I have only been credited with $50.00. I have had nausea and vomitting for 4 months, my stomach is so big and so hard it hurts, my feet get so swollen at times I can feel the fluid slosh around when I walk. My family doctor referred me to Ob-Gyn, as I had bad UTI. Ob-Gyn tried to refer me to my gastro, but could not due to a balance I had their. I thought I would try to work it out on my own, but today I woke up hurting so bad, I thought I would call to see what I needed to do to get an appointment. I asked them, if a patient were to die because they could not be seen, what would they think when they went to bed at night if they had that on their mind. I was told "there is always the emergency room" and then the same doctors would see me. To me that is unethical. I would gladly pay up to $10 on the balance per month, but I do not think I should have to pay more than 50 cents per month. Since my insurance has already paid 80% of the bill, I am quite sure that the office has recovered its cost plus some padding. I was trained to work in a medical office. As part of our graduation services, we also had certain ethics we had to be sworn to. I truly wish the ethics was still in effect. But I know it isn't and this is a major portion of my disability. Anyway, I still wonder if I wait until it is emergency room necessary, and at that point, I die, with something gone beyond the point of being reversed if this office could not be sued. Because, it is possible that what ever I have might be at least slowed in the process, but if it gets further it cannot be treated. I have two issues with this: Office policy might prevent a treatable condition from being treated until it is beyond treatment. And, I thought that insurances wanted us to avoid using the emergency room if at all possible. This could be avoided, but the office has a policy in effect that you cannot be seen until the balance is paid, that would in essence, is causing the medical cost go up. I understand when possible bills need to be paid. BUT WHEN ANOTHER PHYSICIAN CALLS AND WANTS YOU TO BE SEEN, THAT SHOULD OVERRIDE ANY OFFICE POLICY. 18 YEARS ago, I received a diagnosis of fatty liver disease. 2 months ago, I had an ultrasound showing I have Liver parenchyma is diffusely heterogeneous suggesting fatty change. Enlarged hetergenous liver changes. Different that the fatty liver disease suggested in tests 18 years ago. The fact that another doc referred me, I am swelling, I have pain everywhere,I have had rash appear for no reason 2 times in past 4 months, and I itch every when , coming quick and intense than leaving the same way. I think that $498 oer business office, or per my figures $398 is very little for me to owe, AFTER tHE OFFICE HAS RECEIVED FULL PAYMENT FOR AT LEAST 4 PREVIOUS COLONOSCOPIES. gIVEN i DO NOT GO TO THIS OFFICE except WHEN THERE IS A REAL PROBLEM.
