This small Italian restaurant and deli near Victoria has a pretty impressive selection of aged meats and interesting cheeses. However, I was by for a meal. The roast eggplant salad hit the spot --- marinated peppers, well-cooked eggplant (though the skin was a bit tough), and a nice balance of flavors overall. The spinach lasagne, however, was almost inedible --- overcooked spinach that tasted like it'd been in the freezer too long, rubbery cheese, and nothing else. No pasta, no veggies, no sauce --- just a congealing spinach-cheese mass. The clientele was fun (especially an older tweed-clad table), the waiter was reasonable, and most of the food was good --- but stay away from that lasagne.

Okay, time to admit it, Gastronomica have upped their game and their ambitions. I don't know if the service in their shop is any better, but they've now taken that out of the equation by occupying a huge stall at the Tachbrook Street Market. No more waiting for your piadina, pizza, cheese, olives or sandwiches: now you can simply stroll up to any of the friendly people on the stall and get served there and then. Only downer is the price, which is kinda on the high side at £4 for a not-so-filling small piadina or £1.50 for a similarly limited slice of pizza. But at least they're making progress.

    Diavola pizza is delicious!

We came between lunch and dinner. The Caprese salad is a generous portion and delicious. Very attentive wait staff who let us try wines and different meats before making a decision. Authentic. Highly recommend this place.

So upon entering the store, I was immediately expecting the classic 'deli snobbery' experience. You know when you go to an authentic Deli where the staff give you the cold stare if you take too lon to order or don't know exactly what you want. Much to my surprise, I was welcomed in a very warm manner. I asked for a selection of meats, and seriously thought this would be the point where they'd start snapping, but nope, again the lovely lady offered a range of sample slices for me to try! Woohoo! To cut a long story short, I came out a happy girl! Lina Stores can keep there over-priced food, along with their moody staff, I'm sticking with my new bestie Camisa & Sons...! P.S. Could have sworn I spotted the 'Son' of Camisa & Sons working in the back room...

Lots of amazing delis with fresh food…read moreserved by authentic Italian families who had been running the place for generations In London, there isn't any equivalent Italian area but Camisa on Old Compton is a deli straight out of New York. I love the '& Son' on the sign - gives the place a sense of continuity and history The sight of all those hams hanging up as you enter the store is enough to set the cookery brain and the stomach going. There is then the main counter with Italian cheeses galore and some deli items and home made pasta. There is also the full range of tinned and dried goods. The dry pasta from here is better than the fresh stuff from supermarkets. In Italy, they believe the pasta is the star of the dish and the sauce is just there to coat it, not drown it but for that philosophy to work, you need high quality ingredients I left with some pancetta, ham and mini mozzarellas

It was lunchtime and busy so I grabbed the only table available which was outside. I didn't mind because it wasn't cold out but the man behind the counter was so sweet and came out to tell me when a table inside became free. He knew everything about all the produce inside, and I went for ricotta and spinach cannelloni. It came with a choice of delicious fresh salads and I got rocket, tomato and pesto. My meal came to £5.60 which was such a bargain considering it was the best food I'd had in weeks. A salad plate with cold meats and a moussaka with bread and a couple of drinks came in at just under £20. It's away from Sloane Square, and you're unlikely to happen across it unless aimlessly wandering the streets of Belgravia and Chelsea, but it is worth the quick detour if in the area! The guys behind the counter are very knowledgeable and you'll likely come away with a bag full of goodies when you leave. MMM..... biscotti.
