We ate dinner there last night and really enjoyed it. Our server was a very sweet-natured young guy and we enjoyed talking to him. My husband ordered a pasta with mushrooms dish and he said it was very good, although the portion was small. I had the vegetarian lasagna - and not only was it really delicious, but it was also a very substantial serving. Originally this deli style shop, started with a stall at the glorious Borough Market, but business has been good, and now theyve opened a shop in Pimlico, and it is beyond yummy, if you pop by at lunch time, you can have a pick of the freshest loveliest ingredients to have in your sandwich, what's more, they have tasting trays of all the delicious food they sell, it is a great way to get you purchasing not only a sandwich, but some home made sun dried tomatoes, to actually make your own gastronomic experience at home. Loved this place so much we kept coming back. The fresh squeezed orange juice is a must - I watched him squeeze it in a little blending machine right there. So is the sottoli appetizer, so long as you like pickled items. The mushrooms were amazing. And the hot chocolate... Blew my away. The chocolate flavor is so rich, and they put whipped cream on the side so it won't melt, instead you can spoon it in as you eat it. We did have the pasta, which was good but they were out of the noodles it usually comes with, which made me sad. I hope I can go back a third time and try even more of their dishes. read more

My buddy and I were stumbling around town after having visited the Indian Visa Processing Centre-which was a bit stressful-trying to find a decent cup of coffee. What we found, initially, was a wee street market in Pimlico! One of the concessionaires chatted us up as we were drooling over his cheese selection. We asked if he knew where one could find good coffee is the area, and he said, "I have a shop just up the road..." Viola! We found ourselves in Gastronomica! The space is beset with large, dark wood 'family style' tables, a few 2-top tables, and two outside tables. Gastro wasn't totally inviting, atmospherically speaking. -must've been all the dark wood. The vibe was kind of "heavy". However, that did not stop us from each having two rounds of espresso drinks (2 double machiattos, 2 lattes), a chocolate muffin, and three bit-sized puff pastry stuffed with Gorgonzola. The bill came to 11.10, and we caught a nice coffee buzzzz. The nibbles were heated up before arriving at our table. My friend thought that that was a nice touch. I, on the other hand, am not a fan of "nuked" food. I was really taken with my double espresso-marked-with-foam drinkies. The espresso was smooth, easily drinkable (I did have two of 'em!) with no sourness that sometimes characterizes a not-so-well-pulled shot. The service was friendly in a, perhaps, Piemonte, Italy sort of way. Hey! Speaking of Piemonte, there is a large selection of Italian vino for sale on display here. I'd wanted to get my hands on a perky, little Lambrusco, but, feeling wimpy, didn't wish to carry a bottle home. :S -next time! read more

This small Italian restaurant and deli near Victoria has a pretty impressive selection of aged meats and interesting cheeses. However, I was by for a meal. The roast eggplant salad hit the spot --- marinated peppers, well-cooked eggplant (though the skin was a bit tough), and a nice balance of flavors overall. The spinach lasagne, however, was almost inedible --- overcooked spinach that tasted like it'd been in the freezer too long, rubbery cheese, and nothing else. No pasta, no veggies, no sauce --- just a congealing spinach-cheese mass. The clientele was fun (especially an older tweed-clad table), the waiter was reasonable, and most of the food was good --- but stay away from that lasagne. read more

I opened the door of Gastronomica, walked in and my knees nearly gave out. Did I mention that I was 119 years old and have had 17 knee replacement surgeries? That was the first reason why my knees gave out. The second was the smell. Oh delicious. Oh scrumptious. Oh mouth watering delight. Even my 119 year old nose couldn't miss that. And the foods from which these smells came? Italian cheeses, spicy sausages, crusty fresh breads, flavorful antipastos. There was a wall of wines singing out sweet serenades and I was immediately happy. The warm, rustic feel, the cheese and meat platters that delight the taste buds, it was all the goodness of Italy wrapped up in parcel form and sent to London. There's nothing quite like the thrill (read: fear) of shoveling questionable market meat in your mouth. In most cases, you willingly sacrifice the sanitary for the delicious, cross yourself, and open wide. However there's nothing to sacrifice at Gastronomica and any patrons of their cosy Pimlico shop will fearlessly flock to the big red sign in stall or shop form. Living in the area, Gastronomica was a perfect place to pop by for lunch and linger on an espresso (and free internet) for hours on end. Cheese, cured meats, salads and sandwiches are more than enough to nibble on and the atmosphere is like Walt Disney's impression of Italy. I love a good cafe/deli that has charm and authentic ingredients packed inside. The cheese and wine selections are well-presented along the walls and you feel like this is where you should have been doing your charcuterie shopping all along. Gastronomica really does wonders for people into 5 senses experiences. The tables have a sense of purpose, the cured pork leg greeting you on the way in looks straight out of an Italian shop window, the sounds of the espresso machines dripping and frothing and the smells & tastes I'll leave up to you, but it's really got the full package. Okay, time to admit it, Gastronomica have upped their game and their ambitions. I don't know if the service in their shop is any better, but they've now taken that out of the equation by occupying a huge stall at the Tachbrook Street Market. No more waiting for your piadina, pizza, cheese, olives or sandwiches: now you can simply stroll up to any of the friendly people on the stall and get served there and then. Only downer is the price, which is kinda on the high side at £4 for a not-so-filling small piadina or £1.50 for a similarly limited slice of pizza. But at least they're making progress. read more

As a Pimlico local, I have been to Gastronomica a few times. In a sentence I would describe it as good but not great. FOOD: The pizzas are sizable and will satisfy a craving but there aren't many interesting menu options here and aren't wood oven (not as delicious or crunchy). The best entrée option is the lasagna which is better than the average and reasonably priced. SERVICE: the service can be a bit slow and sometimes doesn't always understand English. But is always friendly and serves with a smile. VALUE: best part of Gastronomica is that it is reasonably priced with large portions Come if you are in the area but don't make the trip out just for Gastronomica. read more

This place is really an interesting discovery. We went there for some cheerful dinner after work. At first, I was stunned to see that the restaurant serves also as Italian deli/grocer. The high quality and amazing pasta, olive oils and excellent wines filled the shelves and added quite an atmosphere to the place. It reminded me of my trip to Tuscany good few years back. Although, if you think about bringing your date here think twice as the place is very well lit and to less extent private so it lacks the appropriate setting. However fear not, the food quality served here is excellent. Not to mention quantity! We were politely discouraged by the waiter from ordering more than one starter to share (it was meant for two people and there were four of us). He asked us: are you really that hungry!? The amount of cheese and other nibs was more than satisfying, so rare to find at London restaurants. And the wine! Please try the wines off the list. They have quite a vast choice. Our choice of Chianti from slightly different region was definitely not a disappointment. For the main we had pizzas, ravioli and gnocchi. Needless to say, the quality was excellent and that's exactly what we expected from the simple and healthy Italian dinner. The staff was also great. They were pretty quick and didn't invade our conversations and were chatty and witty at the same time. We couldn't have deserts because we were completely full from wining and dining. I've been here a lot of times... It was a normal italian place few years ago, but now it's perfect as you could expect from a freash and genuine italian place. Server are kind and real italian. Very good, authentic Italian cafe serving light meals, wine and also deli items. They source direct from small, rural producers in Italy and specialise in facilitating a direct to the UK market service for them so that the small producers get a decent return (as middlemen cut out) and UK customers get great produce at reasonable prices. Commended! A lot of the products are organic and carefully selected. Strange that the cafe does not highlight this to the sky?? They really ought to provide more printed information up front about their wines which are very good and some are organic too. Instead, there are just small card labels advertising name and price .... their written menu on the wall has got to be sorted out!!! It is not big enough for customers to read with ease - letters are too crowded. They also need to provide more information about their offerings e.g. what is an 'assagi' (apologies if spelt wrong) up front and not suppose that customers 'could' ask them; most would just get confused and walk out. What a loss! The food is very good indeed. This would be an excellent place for a light evening supper with wine in comfortable surroundings. The star really is their food! The decor is not bad either. It really is somewhere where one pays for the food and not the decor! read more

My cappuccino sprinkled with chocolate powder was one of the best I've had in a while, and the Piadine #1 recommended to me by the waitress was simple but so flavorful. My friend built her own sandwich which she loved as well. They import all of their products from Italy and have a little shop section which could make good souvenirs if you are traveling like we were. read more

There are so many coffee shops out there today which sell awful over priced coffee and muffins in an atmosphere which is more ikea than milan! I am by no means an expert but this is the best coffee, cake, deli and atmosphere i have found so far in london town - and I've been looking!! A peaceful little cafe which manages to give you a slice of heaven (and a cuppa). Walking into this deli you find your leg of cured pork to your right followed by an open fridge case of Italian cheese and then one of cured meats. On your left are shelves of Italian wines. There are a spattering of other Italian sundries for sale in the front. There are a smattering of tables--big community tables and small tables, and there is table service. They have a nice menu of Italian sandwiches, cheese and meat boards and salads. The sandwiches were delicious. It is a bit of a disorganized mess as you head to the bathroom, as if they don't realize their customers will see back there. Also the latte left a bit to be desired. Italian waitstaff, immense wooden tables for Italian-sized families, Italian smells, Italian wine, Italian espresso, and, **most shocking** Italian prices! a sandwich served *to you* with a nice side salad (read: NOT iceberg lettuce & with high quality olive oil) for under 4 pounds - ?? and a proper espresso concoction tops out at 2 pounds - MAX. it confounds the mind. clearly, they are still thinking in euros... or *something.* shhhhh... I'd skip the lasagne and such if I were you and stick with the platters and sandwiches they put together with their imported Italian ingredients, but still, I've never been anything but pleasantly surprised with this place. Okay place, though not as hip as some reviews suggest. Italian meats a bit greasy for my taste, and left me a bit queasy. But my wife's special of the day was sublime, despite the fried mashed potatoes arriving cold. Good coffee. The kitchen is not as spic and span as your mum's, and the service a bit casual. Good value, low stress. Lots of Italian goods like cheese and pesto to take away and cook at home. Overall, a good choice if you're staying in the neighborhood, but if you're only in the area for one morning meal, you're better off at Pimlico Fresh. read more

Just terrific cheeses, hams and pastas at this very cool Italian deli in pimlico. Very affordable prices in a terrific homey style seating arrangement. The chefs and waiters are Italian and are proud to answer questions about what they are serving you. I had the ham and cheese for two, plus the ravioli, and a crostini and finally a canoli. Just had a wonderfully different meal at Gastronomica in Pimlico. It is an Italian delicatessen that serves meals based on the food and wine on its shelves. The difference is that the couple running the restaurant really know their produce and serve deliciously simple, yet excellent quality meals to order. The wine selection contains only quality Italian wine. For example, the house red from the Boscogrosso wine region - Dolcetto Di Ovada was sumptuous! I went here tonight on my own as I've lived in Italy and love Italian food. Good vibes when you walk in, lots of Italian speakers so that's always a good sign. Bruschetta was nice, very fresh and really tasty. I had the tagliatelle with bolognese sauce which was super bland, very surprising. They were "out of house red" so I had to go for the next glass up which was £9- that's a lot even for London! With a 10% service charge added to my bill and no water or bread offered, very bland pasta, I won't go back. Nice waiters though. read more

I've been living in Pimlico for three years now, and every experience of Gastronomica I've had has been shit! The athmophere is terrible, service is terrible and food is overpriced! They have a stall at the market on Tatchbrook street. The guy that serves the cheese is nice but I've bought cheese twice and it's always been very expensive and a big dissapointment! To top it all off, I called them today to see if they had ricotta cheese, and they said yes... so I went to sainsburys, and did a big shopping load, came out with a full backpack and two heavy bags. I walk to Gastronomica, as usual, a very poor athmosphere... I put my bags down and walk over to the counter. There are three people there, cleaning, talking... being pretty useless... No one greated me, they just ignored me for at least 5 minutes... When a girl decided to finally serve me, she anouced they had no ricotta cheese. Eventhough I'd called earlier to see if they had some and the said yes. I ask her for a piece of parmesan cheese and the piece she cuts falls on the floor. She brushes it with her fingers and puts it back down on th counter asking me if the size suits me. I was so surprised that she was trying to sell me her piece that fell on te floor! I told her off and she decided to cut me another one tha I refused and let. They seemed clueless in there! I then had to go all the way back to sainsbury's with all my bags to get ricotta.... I was pretty pissed off! This was the last time I try it! PLease do yourselves a favor and don't go there! Out of al the places in Pimlico, this is one of the WORST ONES! read more

this restaurant is based on a nice idea and the lay-out is fine. It was the worst service I have ever had ..... a grumpy young woman came over and sat menus in front of us then walked away. She came back about ten minutes later (it was not crowded at all) and stood there until we told her our order. She never asked if we wanted drinks and left. Then she brought the wrong order and when I said she had brought me a meat sandwich and I am vegetarian, she rolled her eyes and took the plate away. I then went to the counter to explain to the man who seemed in charge that I was a bit confused as to why she did not apologize and just took my plate away. She said (with back turned) that she never said anything and I said that was the point! He said he has started a new one for me. They did not get it ... she never spoke to us, scowled the whole time and really ruined our meal. Very disappointed. read more
