Aside from modern day Moab being a big tourist destination and jumping off point for adventures in places like Arches NP and Canyonlands NP I didn't know much about its origins so I was excited to visit the Moab Museum. The museum is one large room and while you can view the exhibits in any order I found it was best to start at the very beginning and work my way clockwise. The museum starts with the indigenous people who lived in modern day Moab and ends with Moab being central to two national parks and a recreation hub. Missionaries, fur trappers, cowboys, miners, adventurists and dinosaurs were all covered in between. My favorite exhibit was about William Grandstaff. The exhibit called "Tracing the Story of William Grandstaff" traces his roots from likely being enslaved in Virginia to becoming a Civil War era soldier, frontiersmen, pioneer, cowboy, miner and saloon manager in Utah and Colorado. I love when museums leave me wanting to know more and William Grandstaff is definitely someone who'd I'd like to learn more about. I'd also like to hike the trail named in his honor - the Grandstaff Trail in Grandstaff Canyon. One of the best features of the museum were historical pictures of the Moab area that you could scroll through on a tablet. The photos really helped me understand the history of Moab. Admission was $10 for an adult and I felt it was well worth it. The museum has a good bit of reading, some artifacts and a few interactive exhibits sprinkled in so some kids might be a little bored but I really enjoyed it. The sandbox barely had sand to do anything with, the shaky earthquake barely moves, the spray Dino was dead, the lights were kept on during the informational video. As well as the bathrooms being halfway closed down with stalls, sinks, and hand dryers out of order. And of course, who enjoys working in an environment like that? Not this staff. Amazing fossils of plants, animals, and insects still keep this place going. How unfortunate the beautiful history this place holds is hidden by rundown attractions as well as people.

I was amazed to view actual US currency as well as guns and rifles each worth in the thousands. This Colorado Museum is maintained by a non-profit entity, has a reasonable admission fee and is ranked as a top 10 State museum must see. Accordingly, when visiting the Black Mountain of the Gunnison National Park South Entrance make this an enjoyable and interesting stop afterwards.

The exhibits are strategically placed to allow you to experience how the area evolved. It is easy to walk around, taking your time examining specific items that are of interest to you. The small gift shop is charming and has a number of books and periodicals of the town's history that may be difficult to find elsewhere. For a nominal entrance fee, you can easily spend an enjoyable hour or two learning the history of this great town. There is also a museum donation canister at the entrance way, which I gladly deposited additional money in as I finished my tour as it was definitely worth it!

The highlights I appreciated most were the informative video that explained the historical significance of The Major and his nearby explorations, the replicas of various river craft, and the totally unexpected mini-dinosaur exhibit on the lower level. The latter is tucked away in a room behind the stairs and is otherwise easy to miss if you don't bother actually walking down. We probably wouldn't have considered stopping by this museum if not for the recommendation from the staffer at the Torrey visitor center. If you're passing through, it's definitely worth an hour or two pitstop and the nominal $6 entry fee per adult.

We stumbled upon this museum and we were interested in seeing what they had to offer. It was a mining museum that had collections of rocks and minerals, uniforms and tools used by the miners and other items that were interesting. For those folks that need it, they do have a small elevator. This is also next to the restroom on the lower floor. Besides the rock/mineral room, I found the assay section interesting, where they had scales and weights used to weight the gold or minerals mined. In the gift shop I found two rocks I liked and bought them and a few postcards. Included in the tour is a visit to the jail and the quarters for the acting sherriff. The sherriff quarters had glimpses of a typical bedroom and kitchen for the late 1800's. My sister went to the jail and she said it was an open room with an iron ball with lots of chains to connect the prisoners to. Outside the jail is caboose used to haul minerals from the mines.

For only $6, you can see a huge amount of artifacts and history collected into one place. They recently redid the building, so it's very new and clean inside. There's a nice winding path that takes you all through the Ute Story, from the creation and Bear Dance, to interaction with other tribes, and the eventual coming of the white man and their put into reservations. It's very touching and somber, but enlightening as well. The Utes roamed, loved, hunted and camped nearly all the Rocky Mountains we play in now. Do yourself a favor and see the history that was here before many of us came, and still lives on to this day!
