Very pleased for the care my daughter receives. I am very grateful she has the opportunity to live at GFBL. The staff are caring and compassionate. They call me and inform me if my daughter has medical issues or other problems. I completely trust them to handle her care. I am unable to care for her and GFBL has been giving my daughter the life she so deserves. I would be devastated if this facility would ever close for some reason. read more

History

Established in 1972.

In 1972, Leonard Kirtz, Sr. and concerned parents founded Gateways to Better Living, Inc. to offer an alternative to institutional care, prioritizing the wellbeing of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Starting with a single home in Youngstown, Gateways expanded rapidly, opening group homes by 1986. Over the years, Gateways evolved, breaking ground on new facilities in 1998 and downsizing to offer more personal care with four 8-bed homes in 2002. The organization also pioneered apartment-based supported living and introduced innovative day programming in 2006. For over four decades, Gateways has remained committed to providing exceptional care and continues to evolve to meet the needs of individuals in the 21st century.

Meet the Manager: Karl W.

Karl Ware joined Gateways in 2015. Karl earned a Bachelor of Arts in print journalism from Southern University and A & M College, and a Master of Education in rehabilitation counseling from Kent State University. Karl came to Gateways with a solid background of eighteen years in the field of developmental disabilities with the Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities. After six years as Program Director, Karl assumed the helm of Gateways as Executive Director/Director of Operations on July 1, 2021.

We couldn't do same day, so we met the following morning. Just as hoped, the guy kept it straightforward, honest, helpful and as described. A little context: Originally Sears was out (yes, they still exist). Having repaired a few refrigerators, garage doors and operator control boards myself over the years, I knew things weren't right with these Sears guys (yes, plural -- well, one in training, poor sod). They weren't dishonest, really, just excessive. Especially with cost (...pretty obviously constrained by dinosaur policy -- what felt geared towards getting a fleeced customer to buy a new appliance from Sears). The Sears guys estimated a four-figure two-man project, including for two off-the-shelf generic machine screws, $37 each, parts only. (Still had to pay them for coming out.) Bless their little hearts. I can see how people get bamboozed by this blue-shirted Sears "professionalism". Hearing good things, I contacted Daniil. And in a little more than a day, paid an eighth of the price for way more, better, no-nonsense, good natured, in-and-out service. With warranty. (Sears' job was to be "As-is" for an older-ish appliance in excellent condition.) We're grateful, Daniil -

I called him to discuss the repair and he gave me a very reasonable estimate so I brought the parts in for him to inspect. When I arrived at his shop, he said he could do the work while I waited, I was very happy to hear this since I live 30 miles away. Two guys were working on other projects in a well organized shop and he still found the time to help me. It only took him about 15 minutes to complete the welding job which turned out better than expected and looked very professional. I am confident the repair will withstand the high winds where it will be placed Amazing customer service that I am glad to recommend to my friends and I will keep Sparky's in mind for any future welding or metal fabrication needs. My flag pole will be mounted and proudly fly a 4'x6' American flag this 250th Independance Day to honor two uncles who died in WWII my father, brother, and all who fought to serve this great nation and secure our freedom.
